Overnight Fire At Old TWA Building at JFK

phpvvavZbAM.jpg Overnight we started receiving reports of "heavy smoke conditions" at JFK airport's old TWA building. The building (pictured) is now part of Jet Blue's Terminal 5, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. ABC now reports that the fire, which broke out in a refrigeration room, was safely put out — and no one was in the building at the time. There is minor damage, and an investigation is now underway.

  • Can someone that has been there fill me in on how Jetblue uses the old terminal building? When I first heard about the project, I thought they were going to restore it to be the main entryway for dropoffs, but on a recent visit it was not.

I believe it is still under renovation.

I remember using the old Terminal 5 when it was still TWA. I think it may have been in the very last days of TWA, but I distinctly remember walking down those long tubes to get to the jetways. I feel a little privileged that I got to experience such a gorgeous building at it's intended purpose and am not limited to seeing it as a museum relic after the fact.

I love Jet Blue but I think Terminal 5 sucks. When I heard they were getting their own building, I expected a technical marvel on the inside to match the futuristic design of old TWA building. That's not what it is. If may be bright and shiny but it comes across as cold.

  • The design behind the new Terminal 5 was intentional so as to not distract from the TWA building. T-5 is infinitely more functional than any other terminal at JFK.
