The Department of Correctional Services has turned down former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress' request to take part in a work release program that would have allowed him to spend some nights at home, according to 1010WINS. Burress — who was sentenced to two-years in prison after shooting himself in the leg in a Manhattan nightclub — asked for the furlough just two months into his sentence.

From the start, prosecutors opposed Burress' bid for work release, arguing it was too soon to offer the Superbowl champion any clemency. The furlough program would have allowed Burress to leave the Oneida Correctional Facility to work a pre-approved job from outside, where he could more easily negotiate with representatives from new teams and see his wife and children. Burress can appeal the decision within 30 days, but he won't be able to reapply for the work release until July 2010.

"I still don't get it. Two years for carrying a gun?"

yep, puzzling, but not really. he's black.

you think wes welker or eli or kevin boss or brett favre would have gotten 2 years, or 2 minutes in jail, for carrying a gun? not only would a white guy get no penalty, they'd prob be the NRA posterboy for the next 10 years.

the fact that plax got put away is despicable. meanwhile, there's thugs out there committing habitual armed robbery who get a slap on the wrist.

way to go yet again, justice system.

It's a national disgrace for New York that we deprived this man of his liberty for exercising his Second Amendment right to bear arms. And now this.

I still don't get it. Two years for carrying a gun?

There were no victims besides himself. He didn't use it in the furtherance of another crime. He didn't threaten anybody. He's not a flight risk. He's not a career criminal.

With all the mitigating circumstances above, he could have contributed more to society by continuing to work and provide community service. Plaxico got caught in a totalitarian nightmare.
