The B62 Arrives This Sunday

phpjMW3y8PM.jpg The B61 is getting split it in two starting this weekend! Starting Sunday the route will be split in to two shorter routes, the B61 and the B62, which NYC Transit says will increase service reliability.

Currently, the B61 route is 9.7 miles long, running from Brooklyn’s Red Hook to Queens Plaza. NYCT President Thomas F. Prendergast says dividing the long, cumbersome route into two shorter routes will make it "easier to supervise and more manageable to operate."

The new B61 route will travel between the Ikea Terminal in Red Hook and Downtown Brooklyn (Smith Street and Livingston Street), while the northern B62 route will link Downtown Brooklyn (Boerum Place and Livingston Street) and Queens Plaza (PDF). The latter will be rerouted past the Williamsburg Bridge Plaza Bus Terminal — which will allegedly allow a Transit dispatcher to monitor the route. It will also allow easier connections to the Marcy Avenue subway stop, and the six other bus routes at the terminal.

I hope this solves the problem of waiting for 30+ minutes in downtown Brooklyn only to have 3 buses show up at the same time. But will service be better or overcrowded?

I have seen the new schedules posted at the bus stops in Red Hook and it looks as if there will be fewer buses overall ie. in the morning there use to be buses arriving at 7:13, 7:18, 7:22, and 7:28 at the stop near Baked. The new schedule shows that buses will arrive at 7:14, 7:24, and 7:34. There are also fewer buses after 10pm.

This must be the price we pay for "service reliability." Now it's going to be reliably overcrowded (as if it weren't already).

So the B61 will become the B62 in Greenpoint?

  • tokyohanna

Yep! The signs on some of the stops have changed over already, noticed it last night.

I mean, the wait time at Livingston. Confusing already.

Can you link to a bus map showing the 61/62 route in its entirety?

    Oh, it's there, thanks

I am an unreformable pessimist. What's the wait time at WBurg Plaza? 10, 15 mins in 30 degree cold? I ride the line from Red Hook or Livingston to 45th Rd for the #7 now and then, and in the winter, I'd rather be on a warm bus the whole time, no matter how long it takes.
