Citywide Jobless Map Reveals Blacks Worst Hit by Recession

The overall unemployment rate in NYC was 10.1 percent in the third quarter of 2009, but the jobless numbers vary greatly from neighborhood to neighborhood, according to a distressing, if unsurprising, new study by the Fiscal Policy Institute, a liberal research group. For example, overall unemployment was 5.1% on Manhattan's Upper East and West Sides, compared to 15.7% in Central Bronx and 19.2% in East New York. FPI also broke down the data by race, finding that blacks rank #1 in the jobless category in almost every part of NYC (except areas of Staten Island and Whitestone, Queens, where info on blacks was "not applicable.")

Both The Wall Street Journal and City Room have great interactive maps of the damage; by scrolling over City Room's map, you can see how individual racial and ethnic groups fared in different parts of town. "Wall Street might be recovering, but the recession rages on in New York City's Main Street neighborhoods," said FPI's Chief Economist James Parrott in a statement. "In some cases, great disparities exist within neighborhoods. For example, in the West Brooklyn neighborhood stretching from Brooklyn Heights to Red Hook and Park Slope, white male unemployment was 3 percent, while in the same neighborhood, 46 percent of black men were jobless."

Of course, it's important and depressing to bear in mind that these numbers don't account for those unemployed souls who've given up and stopped seeking employment. Though the city's unemployment rate in November fell to 10.0 percent (seasonally adjusted) from 10.3 percent in October, FPI does not believe this signals an improvement in the local job market. Instead, the report attributes the decline entirely to people leaving the labor force, rather than an increase in the number of jobs. Here's a pdf of the full report; enjoy it with a warm bath and a nice bottle of pills.

This "liberal" study sure doesn't mean much. Even during the good times blacks still rank #1 in the jobless category. The fact that immigrants who can barely speak English aren't ranked #1 jobless should be a huge embarrassment and wake-up call to the American black community. Time to put away the hip-hop dreams and start hitting the books more often, you think? Time to finally retire your outdated, crab-bucket, racist mentality that you don't want good grades in school 'cause you don't want to "act white". No other culture is like this, hence, the reason why they have jobs and black Americans don't. No, America is not going to just hand it to you out of guilt or retribution or whatever. Stop looking for hand-outs. Stop blaming white people and institutional racism for your problems, they're not responsible for your ghetto culture. Stop playing the victim. Embrace opportunities. Then maybe you'll find some good job prospects and employers will hire you.

All entry level jobs blacks generally did are now done better by undocumented south of the border types. They show up, don't ask for their money up front, work the entire day, have a skill level, don't steal and aren't violent.

instead of getting all 'turn off the rap music' why dont we think of a bunch of solutions for the problem?

we're all americans, right, if one in 4 black men are in jail nearly half the others are out of work. That means FELLOW Americans need help. I think people can do more than just blaming it on their music.

Keep pushing Obamunism and the illegals will take the rest of the black communities' jobs.

  • Amanda Harletsch

what? the illegals? so the people with the least amount of resources and advantages are somehow the reason black communities can not take responsibility on their "fate"?!

Being a victim for ever won't help your cause.

  • Guest

speaking of the illegals, how would one keep track of how many of the illegals lost their jobs? i think it'd be kinda impossible.

  • JenChungsBaby

If OTC didn't write in absolutes then none of you literalists would have anything to say. Because you know, generally, that he's right.

  • MrCholly

Yeah he's right alright. I guess you too have never had contacts with Black people, which would NOT be a surprise.

  • ides_of_march

Perhaps blacks would be better off if they didn't drop out of school at higher rates as well. Things like a basic education (which is free btw) tend to help one's economic prospects.

Quit bitching, learn proper English, turn off the rap "music" and stay in school. Then maybe I'll listen to your bellyaching.

  • MrCholly

Mayor Bloomberg has state he prefers hiring illegal aliens over SOME citizens, because they work cheaper and don't complain I guess this proves it.

  • Amanda Harletsch

the closer you are to upper economic status the most likely you are to keep your employment, a dynamic well known by Goldman Sacks and friends! Let's keep deregulation and the republican myth of "small government" up! It works so well for the few around central park!

  • OTC

Hmmm...is this shocking? Just look at the education level and incarceration rate for black males and you'll see why they can't get jobs at the same rate as white males.

When you have a society that doesn't value education and has high rates of incarceration they are not going to succeed. Perhaps if the black males spent more time trying to be like Obama or Colin Powell instead of mocking education and committing crimes they wouldn't have this problem.

  • resa

Yes, it's all true. The only educated black males in this country are Colin Powell and Obama. I think all those dark skinned male folks getting diplomas at my college graduation were using too much of that cocaine that was cut with something that turned them black.

  • whitecastlerock

What neighborhoods were they from? Maybe they didn't come from the troubled areas located on this map...

  • HOTCUP

"When you have a society that doesn't value education..."

you really have no contact with black people, do you? that's sad and frustrating.

  • MrCholly

Hmmm...is this shocking? Just look at the education level and incarceration rate for black males and you'll see why they can't get jobs at the same rate as white males.

Were you born as stupid as your post indicates or did it take you a long time to acquire your level of ignorance.According to you all Black males are uneducated and do not value education. Also let's look at the unfair and racist justice system and a Mayor who prefers and have stated that those in this city who are illegal aliens work for cheaper wages that American citizens. That's what he prefers and has stated as much. But racist like you always seem to find blame with those who has been subjected to those racist practice.

  • valeriob

I'm going to have a shit fit on the next idiot who regurgitates the whole 'wall street v main street' idea to make a point.

It's ignorant and clearly meant for the uninformed to climb on board to what they're saying, because if they don't work on wall street, it seems like someone is finally fighting for them. But they're not... They live on Other Street. Can we start talking about Other Street?

  • HOTCUP

how about white street vs. black street? (see map for directions)

  • JenChungsBaby

Or like American Apparel's Dance ads vs. their Josh & Sara ads -- no contest.

  • youngpro

change the caption to 'black neighbor hoods' not 'blacks' in general, as obvious as the association may seem.

but how about the figures for blacks were pretty much the same even BEFORE the recession?
