Bernard Madoff Moved To Prison's Medical Facility

Ponzi scheme Bernard Madoff is now in a medical facility at the federal prison in Butner, North Carolina, where he is currently serving a 150-year prison sentence for his multi-billion dollar fraud. And a local TV station hears that his injuries were "consistent with an assault."

Yesterday afternoon, the Wall Street Journal reported that the 71-year-old "is now housed in a low-security medical center at the prison. A spokeswoman for the Butner facility said Mr. Madoff was moved to the hospital on Dec. 18 but declined to say what necessitated the move." ABC affiliate WTVD heard that Madoff was actually "admitted to Duke University Hospital last Friday with serious injuries consistent with an assault... Sources told WTVD... that the convicted Ponzi schemer had facial fractures, broken ribs and a collapsed lung and was discharged from Duke two days ago." (In October, the tabloids reported Madoff got into a fight with another inmate, perhaps boosting his prison cred.)

In August, there were reports that Madoff had cancer, but the Bureau of Prisons said that was untrue. The WSJ noted of Butner's medical facility, "Prisoners are transferred there for problems that require extended supervision, though the ailments could be minor," adding, "cancer treatment is one of the facility's specialties."
