Best And Worst Post Offices Outed By Times

phpEhO7aUPM.jpg The battle for Worst Post Office in the Five Boroughs continues... and the NY Times hints that it may just be the Kensington branch in Brooklyn. They report that even during the busy holiday season, no holiday cheer can be found; one customer saying, “The people who work here are awful to people.” Their solution, head to the massive James A. Farley Post Office, where allegedly the average wait time is around two minutes, and there's even a "well-meaning supervisor striding around to see how he could help." The paper found customers there from Brooklyn and Queens who travel just to get efficient service... but has anyone checked for rats?

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Red Hook Post Office. That place is hell on earth.

The Morningside Heights branch on 112th between Broadway and Amsterdam has got to be one of the worst in terms of long lines. At any given time, no more than 2 of the 8 windows are staffed, producing horrendous wait times during non rush hours.

Is this article kidding about the Farley Post Office? I've never had less than a 30 minute wait there. Except for at the Automated Postal Machine, which are often going unused. But on line, to seek actualy help from a human being - never less than 1/2 an hour. Perhaps I've just had bad timing? Also - I've never found a supervisor when I needed one, which makes me think that part is a joke too. Like the other day when the APM depository was jammed and no one could mail their packages, where was the supervisor then??

You think that's bad, when I moved out of my parent's house, I had my mail forwarded as well. There is an option for 'individual' or 'family' - obviously I chose individual.

Needless to say, I started receiving my parents bills in my new apartment, and they had to go down to the post office to correct it. The Postal worker had the balls to say I filled the form out incorrectly, but they mailed a confirmation letter to both addresses that clearly stated otherwise.

But here's the kicker- I got what appeared to be a check addressed to someone in Kensington, looked up the person in the phonebook and called them to say I'd be mailing them thier check. The person told me, that they no longer lived at that Kensington address!!!

That's right, the Kensington post office decided they would not only forward me my parents bills, but also other residents that have moved!!! Oh, and they only forwarded things that appeared to be bills, magazines, and mail addressed with just my first initial were still sent to my parents. Talk about shitty service!

  • I used to live in Kensington and had the distinct pleasure of visiting the local post office a couple times. Apparently the slip that says "will attempt delivery again" actually means "I'll be damned if I have to drag this 11oz package for 5 blocks two days in a row, pick it up your damn self."

Even better: I just moved in December and had my mail forwarded, but I just learned that the 2 weeks' worth of mail from before the forwarding kicked in either never made it to or was removed from my old mailbox. Which means I get to attempt communicating with them over the phone tomorrow! Yay!

The one on Prince St. is pretty damn terrible as well.

  • Yeah, service there has been pretty much non-existent since they closed it back in June.

Hello? Isn't that the Apple store?

To the opposite end, the post office at 24th and 9th in Manhattan is one of the best. At least when you go to the Asian PO worker. She is always friendly, fast, helpful and cant do enough for you. I dont know whether shes an immigrant (she has an asian accent) or a native but she seems awfully glad to be of assistance. She probably hasnt drank the USPS Kool-aid yet.

Oddly, I've found the postal workers at London Terrace (aka w.24 + 9th ave) to be very mean, and slow. They try to start arguments over every package I've ever sent.

But I only go there because JAF has very long wait times, regardless of what the Times says. I had to go there last week to pick up a package and I waited 35 minutes--the package window was closed with no explanation, there was no security or info person on duty (or anyone in a santa hat), and I had to wait on the general mailing line. It almost got exciting when some elderly gentleman almost started a fight with an old woman who cut the line and was obviously crazypants, trying to mail something in a Hallmark shopping bag and not wanting to put it in a jiffy bag.

But Washington Heights is the worst. If I got a package slip from there, there was a 50-50 chance that the package was at a different post office.

Those Asians love to work hard and be helpful!

  • Snoopy

Unlike some other ethnic group that we can't say?

  • robingee

Yeah, I was being mock-racist but you took it and ran with it. Bravo.

  • jag80

I nominate the Post Office on 14th Street btwn A&B as the worst. Incompentence combined with meanness at its best.

  • justthinkin

Stop with the nominations. When it comes to the post office, there is no democracy. Why else is their boss called a "general"? It's as close to a junta as we're going to see.

  • justthinkin

GPO=alternative universe. Evolution in reverse. Love that video, especially the woman who tries to get the guy at the counter to post something for her. That and the bing-bing. "Next asshole...er customer, please step up!"

  • NannyState

I always use the one at the UN. It's not that fast but where else can you have such a weird experience when you're sending another money order to Larry Flynt?

  • Snoopy

Normally I can follow your logic, but you lost me on that one Nanny.

  • hoodlum

The Kensington post office causes a peculiar rift in time where no matter how long the line is, you will be waiting at least an hour.

  • jeff212

they should take the time to visit the 104th st post office between amsterdam and broadway. one day i went there to pick up a package and while standing in line i heard 3 different employees laughing and making fun of me ( from the other side of the wall out of view) for standing in the wrong line. i then yelled " just come out and tell me which line to stand in and do your job"
