NYPD Must Turn Over Racial Shooting Data to NYCLU

122109copshooter.jpg Following the NYPD shooting of Sean Bell in November 2006, the NYCLU filed a Freedom of Information request with the NYPD, asking for the NYPD’s annual statistical reports on police shootings from 1996 through 2006, as well as data about the race of civilians shot at by police. In response, the NYPD released some annual statistical reports, but it denied the NYCLU’s request for full racial data. A lawsuit ensued, and now a judge has ruled that the NYPD can't withhold the data, which will show the racial breakdown of people shot at but not struck by cops.

In the ruling, Supreme Court Judge Joan A. Madden wrote that the NYPD "failed to provide adequate justification'' for withholding the information. "The court’s decision makes clear that the NYPD had no basis for withholding this data, which is necessary to conduct a complete study of the role race plays in police shootings," said NYCLU Associate Legal Director Christopher Dunn in a statement. The NYPD has not commented yet, but NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman said, "The records we’ve obtained thus far paints a troubling, but incomplete, picture of the NYPD’s shooting practices. This new data will help us give New Yorkers the full story on police shootings, not the NYPD’s spin."

This isn't hard folks, someday the racial alarmists are going to have to face the real problem. (Hint: it's not the police)

"According to data from victims and witnesses, blacks commit about 82 percent of all shootings and 72 percent of all robberies. Whites commit about 5 percent of all violent crimes, though they make up 35 percent of the city's population, and commit 1 percent of shootings and about 4 percent of robberies."

    Thread Killa!

I watched part of the video and I stopped because there was a singer that kept repeating the "N" word. Being white I was totally offended.

Then the spear chuckers wonder why.

  • dagblad

Statistically interesting would be the race of the cops who did the shooting. We are talking about racism here, aren't we?

  • jaycjay

"We are talking about racism here, aren't we?"

No, in fact we're not. We're talking about racial bias; specifically whether the race of a suspect increases the likelihood that he will be shot by police.

Such bias could occur regardless of the race of the police officer involved.

Would you prefer to have an all black police force like they have in Newark, DC, Phillie or Detroit? Patterson, Camden... Should I go on?

  • books

these skewed statistics should make people think about what the root causes of this crime.

it aint easy being black in this world

It will show what we already know. That most people shot and/or killed by the police are black men.

But black men also commit a majority of the crime in NYC (and this is a fact) so everything fits together.

Young black men commit over 61% of all murders in NYC, of course they're getting killed by the police more than whites or asians or whoever else.

  • eyekantspel

    Crime is racist.

  • JacqueMehoff

    just release the data,

    what's that saying cops love?

If you have nothing to hide, let us see.

    or something like that.

could also be, if you're innocent let us see and question you and come in your home or search your car.

It's amazing how blind some people can be to true statistical scientific analysis of evidence. If blacks in New York commit a greater percentage of violent crime, then it figures that they will end up getting shot at more. No amount of hopeful wishing and declarations that we are all the same under the skin will cover that.

To be perfectly fair the statistics of police shootings have to be linked to statistical racial analysis of criminal behavior. As Chris Rock jokingly put it, "The best way to avoid getting beaten up by the police is not to be a criminal".

  • farleft

Yeah, sure...Make a weak argument about the unfairness of this data, use Chris Rock as your token black guy because he's so likable, and quote him out of context to support your point. Real smart.

I believe that Bill Cosby saw the problem of being black in America. And he stated it straight out.

Strangely enough there doesn't seem to be a problem with other, newer, immigrants to America, whether they be Indian, Oriental, Caribbean or whatever. And the color of their skin has nothing to do with it.

Afro Americans are using the race/slavery thing to suck as much money as they can get. And they have done it successfully for over 100 years. It's about time that crap stops. It's called go out there and get a job and start having a femily where the father is at least known by name.

  • Snoopy

Strangely enough the Hispanic community is not being counted properly. It's a racist view that only those of dark skinned Afro Americans are targeted. There are plenty of Hispanics that kill each other and others. What gives with this study?
