What We Listened To This Year

phpP6FseZPM.jpg

The NY Times' David Gallagher linked to this chart earlier on Twitter, which tracks the listening habits of music fans in New York City and compares them to The World. Unsurprisingly, we love Animal Collective way more than anyone else. Seriously, our love for that band is practically off the charts, as they say. In fact, how dare you even try to measure our love for Animal Collective, Last.fm. How. Dare. You. Other trends: we totally stopped listening to Britney in February, it was the summer of Grizzly Bear, and Lady Gaga who? We'll take Karen O, thankyouverymuch. Grab a PDF of the chart here — did your iPod faves make it on there?

    pretty colors

  • It isn't that I think the music NYC is listening to is super great (though some of it is) but rather how appalled I am to look at the rest of the world. What the hell, planet Earth? That is some garbage.

  • babyhitler

what the fuck? This is shit I listened to in 2008, not 2009. I'm so ahead of the curve like a true new yorker. I listened to lady gaga when she sang for the miss universe 2008 pageant. animal collective in aug 08 (only one great song really but that song is awesome). I'm suprised MGMT isn't on here for the ny graph. they'll probably be there for the 2010 graph with the way this guy is behind the times. the only artist on this list that I actually started to listen to on this list is La Roux.

  • Seriously, what are you, 14? "They suck now, I was totally listening to them before they were popular. Dur."

  • hotstepper

oh yeah, i remember that pageant. it rocked. back then she was calling herself "Little Miss Gaga."

  • MsMarvel

I have no idea how to read this thing. Or why. So really... there's that.

  • imadick

look at the raw data download, there's no city or zip code data there. it's totally made up.

  • imperialnetwork

The fact that Taylor Swift is no where to be found on this graph is an indictment of the entire enterprise. :)

  • MsMarvel

If you zoom in really, really close, her name is in the World category in February 08. If I knew how to read this chart, I could tell you what that means.

  • HOTCUP

oh, mainstream white people music charts. is there a less accurate measure of music popularity?

  • Polemicist

I love the anti-white bias of the liberals on this site. It isn't enough white people are 10% of the world's population and will be practically extinct by the end of the century. We can't even rock out in our last few years in peace.

  • bucephalus

Who exactly do you think makes up the majority of the music-listening public?

  • Joshua

Yeah. This is indicative of nothing.

  • homeopt

I live in the most expensive zip code of the city and am wondering if they can drill down to that level. Obviously, I and my neighbors are setting the trends for New York City, and ergo, the world.

  • felixthecat2

    cool

  • hotstepper

that really looks like a nice piece of shit. just sayin'.
