Brooklyn Heights Is Split Over Terror Trial

2009_12_majidkhan.jpg

Brooklyn Heights residents have mixed opinions about the plan to try a suspected Al Qaeda operative in Cadman Plaza East courthouse. The Daily News took to the streets of the tony neighborhood, where they found supporters of the proposal to bring Guantanamo Bay detainee Majid Khan before a jury in Brooklyn, and opponents like Brooklyn Heights business owner Andrea Demetropoulos, 57. "Everyone deserves a fair trial ... I'm just not sure I want it happening here downtown."

But Brooklyn Heights writer Brooke Allen, 53, thinks the borough is "ready for it." "We're always talking about fair trials. This is a chance to put our money where our mouth is." And no one is a bigger booster of the plan than Harry Likourentzos, a manager at the Park Place Restaurant — a diner near the federal courthouse. "We always get a bump from big trials. This could double our lunch rush."

As a BK Heights resident, I'm happy to have the suspected terrorists tried here. It's a reminder that we live in a country of laws, where every is guaranteed the right to a fair trial, that everyone - and I emphasize everyone - is innocent until proven guilty. People that assert otherwise under the banner of being somehow more "American" clearly aren't.

Fuck these mother fuckers: they would never give an American a fair trial!!

To longacre's point, there are some who deserved to be handcuffed to the flagpole out front of the court house and left to the vultures. (Or the more motivated street gang members.)

    "Everyone deserves a fair trial..."

    No, they don't, actually.

Some people seem to be ignorant of the fact that New York is a target at all times.
