Social Worker Killed In Fight Over Gym Equipment

2009_12_nautiluselliptical.jpg

Two men killed a 50-year-old social worker in a brutal attack over fitness equipment in a Brooklyn gym, according to police.

Douglas Smith was murdered after a dispute over who had dibs to a Nautilus elliptical machine at the Church Avenue Fitness Club in East Flatbush. After exchanging words with a "bodybuilding buff standing more than 6 feet tall, and a younger scrawnier club member," Smith's rivals summoned two men from outside the gym to attack him, the Daily News reports.

The perps approached Smith from behind as he worked out on the elliptical machine and stabbed him three times in the back before hitting him on the head with the hammer. Smith — who had recently earned his master's degree in psychology and spent his days providing aid to parolees — died at Kings County Hospital on Sunday morning. Cops have nabbed one suspect, 19-year-old Shawn Hing, who is accused of striking Smith with the hammer. He is facing a charge of second-degree murder and is being held without bail. Another suspect remains at large.

the jewels of society make another point!

Okay, it looks like Ben Muessig has no intention of correcting his post. For anyone who wants to get what's likely the truer story, remove the following from the post:

After exchanging words with a "bodybuilding buff standing more than 6 feet tall, and a younger scrawnier club member," Smith's rivals summoned two men from outside the gym to attack him, the Daily News reports.

Replace with the following from the Daily News.

An argument between Smith, a bodybuilding buff standing more than 6 feet tall, and a younger, scrawnier club member preceded the fatal attack, witnesses said.

Clubgoers said the dispute was over who claimed first dibs on a Nautilus elliptical machine. The club member quarreling with Smith summoned two pals to the gym for backup, witnesses said.

The "bodybuilding buff" phrase is a parenthetical element describing Doug Smith. It does not describe a third party. That's basic reading comprehension. The last sentence reaffirms that there was only one person in the gym that had a beef with Smith, not two or more "rivals."

This is why people were wrong when they wrote last week that news organizations limiting their articles on Google news wouldn't affect them. Gothamist can just paraphrase it for them to read, they said. Unfortunately, Gothamist writing is often like a bad game of "Telephone," where whispering a message from one person to another down a line results in something completely unrelated at the end of the line.

Hing will have lots of time to work out now!

  • NannyState

Where there will be plenty of training partners willing to work on his glutes.

This is the exact reason why we need a death penalty. Why put Hing in jail? For what? Rehabilitation? Give me a break. Should be enforcing social Darwinism and removing this slime from the gene pool.

  • ANGRYGOD11

The main reason to oppose the death penalty is it's too easy to execute the wrong person. Check out how many people on Death Row were exonerated by DNA or just basic detective work in the past few years. With certainty, I would happily throw the electric chair switch.

How many innocent individuals are killed on American highways? Do we ban the practice of driving? Of course there will be an occasional accident", but that is the way life is. For 99.9% of the time, the criminal that is put to death deserves to die several times. Most death row inmates have killed at least two people.

And how will a Death Penalty bring back Doug??? Texas executed thousand and yet it is the murder capital of the nation. Give me a break. You people make a joke about humane education but it works. Not for EVERY One STudent but it makes a big difference. NO one else talks to these kids about compassion. Humane education will improve Society as a whole.

  • brooklynmouthoff

It won't bring back Doug, sadly. You're right.

But it will rid the world of another filthy animal. Monsters like these don't deserve the luxury of life...even if it is in prison.

Fry the animal. Bring back the electric chair.

  • pitzeleh8

I agree about humane education. It can do a lot of things. Unfortunately, however, giving someone a conscience is not one of them.

  • Snoopy

How is Texas the murder capital of the nation? Given its large size and population versus Newark and other shit holes. How is Texas the murder capital?

And since when are we lacking for a bunch of thugs that barely speak a language that can be understood unless you live in the hood. Rehabilitate them? You have to be kidding. Put them at hard labor rebuilding our infrastructure and then maybe they can learn a trade and contribute something to society. The violent ones, kill them straight out and make them goose food.

Anyone who was hanging out with Hing that day should be hung.

I work with Doug. Or rather, worked with Doug... I can honestly say I've never met anyone that perpetually pleasant. Despite being a pretty hulking figure, he had the personality of a teddy bear. I never once saw without a smile on his face. And I definitely never, ever saw him argue with anyone over anything. You could hang around him for less than 10 seconds and walk away feeling totally relaxed. Needless to say this has left a huge hole in our lives at his workplace. I can't even begin to imagine what his family is going through. My thoughts are with them.

Unfortunately, the Daily News article also got a number of things wrong, and was more than a bit confusing itself. Doug had already completed his masters, but it was in social work, not psychology. He was about to get his state license. As far as the irony of it being a parolee(s) who was the perp, it's not something that's lost of any of us at our agency.

Sad. But the way this column was written, the story is totally confusing. See the original Daily News article instead. This writing is garbage

  • felixthecat2

You sound so frustrated. I feel sorry for you :( Perhaps Harmony web site can help?

  • felixthecat2

    I meant Eharmony website.

  • Snoopy

Are you sure you didn't mean Ebonics website?

  • Clarice City

It's stories like these that really make me want to be an avid death penalty supporter. My dog has more self control when he wants something. Shawn Hing has the brain of a child, the brawn of a man, 'thug life' delusions of granduer and the temperment of a feral animal. Unfortunatley, he is a dime a dozen.
