Goodbye Bodega, Hello 7-Eleven

Love 'em or hate 'em, 7-Eleven is here to stay. According to the Observer, the store will be a "recessionary scar" on this city for quite some time. The company will open 100 new Manhattan locations (up from six) in the next five years. They're also encouraging storeowners "to convert their existing business to a 7-Eleven store, complete with business model, products and technology." Will the corporate giant kill the bodega? At least we can look forward to easy access to Free Slurpee Day and that cabernet "with juicy plum Slurpee overtones."

    7/11 is rampant in Taiwan

Ah, the bodega....a throwback to the bad old days, when national chains wouldn't come to NYC. I agree with a previous poster -- there's one good one for every ten. They tend to be dirty, overpriced and the workers usually surly.

bodegas can't disappear! in many neighborhoods they are the last bastions where people can find certain ethnic foods and treats....

  • Malcolm Tucker

Not only that, but 7-11's aren't going to take food stamps in exchange for ciggies and liquor!

  • ozik

Slurpees and nachos, the best reason to go to a 7-11.

  • 99centmenu

aside from the occasional slurpee fix, 7-11 is good for absolutely nothing and the majority of you already know that. now wawa, that would be some shit..

  • HOTCUP

didn't gothamist report on this last summer?

  • babyhitler

we need 7 eleven to sell the shit they got in hawaii. asian buns and spam wasabi.

the best reason to go to a bodega over a 7-11: there's never a long line at the bodega. mostly because no dipshits go in there trying to use a credit card. seriously, jonathan, do you really need to put your bagel and cream cheese and orange drink on your card?

  • LinkMan

I believe most 7-11 stores have merchant agreements with their banks where signatures aren't required for card payments up to $25. That makes using a credit card actually much faster than paying in cash. There's no need to fish around for the right denomination bill or for the cashier to count out change.

I pay for small things using an RFID card at CVS all the time. I don't even have to take the card out of the wallet--I just tap my wallet on the card reader and leave (wait two seconds if I want a receipt). It's probably twice as fast as paying in cash.

    7/11 doesn't carry quarter waters.

    Pass.

No loosies, ID checks, and no cigs for food stamps.

  • Gothamist_Cynic

Fuck 7-Eleven. We need some Wawas in NYC.

  • burgeon

Commenting for the first time in a year to say hell yes to Wawa. Hoagies that would put Subway out of business, the best artificial high-fructose lemonade tea in the world, and fee-free ATMs.

  • Snoopy

You got that one right WaWa's forever. Plus they are a local franchise. Got to go to WaWa's.

  • tsol

    Agreed!

The only advantage bodegas have is that they sell under-the-counter "loosies" to minors who are running errands at night for their pregnant moms...

  • zodak

all the mid-western transplants will shop there because it's familiar & hipsters will shop there "ironically" putting local places out of business.

  • cea303cea

7-11 may not be the dream corner store, but all of these "local businesses" are completely overpriced. Khims market, Sunac, and every corner store in my neighborhood have stratospheric prices. They are friggin criminals!!!!

  • jonathan

Silver Lining: At least I can use a credit card for purchases under $10 now.
