Santacon 2009 — 'Tis The Season!

Everyone's favorite holiday-themed charity drive/drink-a-thon hit the streets today when Santacon came to town. Hundreds of costumed revelers donned their gayest apparel for the annual Christmas-time costume romp, which also doubles as a canned food drive. Starting at 10 am at five different rallying points in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and New Jersey (sorry Manattan and the Bronx), Santas toured the city before converging on Washington Square Park this afternoon — perhaps prompting NYPD to send this out over the police scanner: "MANHATTAN *DISORDERLY GROUP* WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK / THOMPSON ST (6-PCT) PD CALLING A LEVEL-1 MOBILIZATION TO THE SCENE IN REGARDS TO A LARGE DISORDERLY GROUP AT THE LOCATION."

Let's hope everything turned out okay, because according to rules posted on the Santacon website, "Santa doesn't get arrested."

new yorkers are supposed to be nonchalant enough to look the other way if they are not participating in whatever events are taking place in the big urban experiment that is NYC. there the pat's day parade, the easter bonnet parade, wigstock, the infamous mermaid parade, the halloween parade and now finally a great way to end the year, SANTACON!!!!

we've got it all but mardi gras. stay your boring a** inside reading the times or doing laundry or studying for the bar or hating on everybody ... but YOU CAN'T STOP THE PARADE ... but you ... CAN LET IT PASS YOU BY.

gothamist is my favorite place to be reminded that old people have figured out how to use computers.

Isn't this entire city a disorderly group?

  • bucephalus

Gothamist should implement a filter that replaces "hipsters" with something like "rapscallions" or "scallywags" or, better yet, "dang youngsters who won't get off my lawn."

  • hbomb1947

I was at Washington Square Park; the Santas weren't really disorderly at all. Sure they were drunk and exuberant, but mostly they were just dancing and having a good time. They did leave a lot of trash, broken bottles, etc. in the basin of the fountain (as the fountain is dry for the winter, hundreds of people were actually hanging out in the fountain).

Eventually, however, the cops showed up and asked everyone to leave.

And I feel sorry for the haters who can't stand the fact that people had so much fun at Santacon!

  • NannyState

Oh yeah? So where's my fucking present?

  • zodak

    more hipster nonsense

  • mellow_fellow

    When's Satancon?

  • mellow_fellow

    So's yer mom.

  • Willie Nillie

Sanata whatever the dumbshit they cool it is stupid and totally overboard on all counts. Get jobs.

  • resa

Yeah, I grew up in Manhattan and I think these people are stupid annoying drunken stupid hipsters.

  • Gregoire

The Santas were ruder than normal this year. If you're going to continue this tradition, you might want to remember that you're dressed like brightly colored freaks.

  • Snoopy

I'm sure they are aware that they are dressed as brightly colored freaks. It's part of the theme. And yes I know one of those individuals. And yes he is from an outer boro who was transplanted from the midwest. And yes he is one of "those."

The only time I have contact with him is on this day. He lied to me and said the final stop was over in Brooklyn. I will never trust another Santacon again.

  • dirty hipster

so everyone on gothamist if a native born manhattanite?

    that's depressing.

  • thefacts

No, just not a dirty hipster, who conform to all the other dirty hipsters in style, speech, music and dress.

  • NYC Lady13

The cops were very understanding and overall didn't get rough with Santa. They seemed to like it actually! This is a yearly tradition and its a great way to celebrate the season.

  • NannyState

Book them and then extradite them to the North Pole for further prosecution.

  • SirDentes

dumb hipsters. i bet they're from the midwest, amiright?

  • thefacts

I sees two of them yesterday and started goofing:

"Santa, I am a tourist and need directions. Do you know where is the North Pole."

They laughed, but - get this - they pointed to NJ.

I had to tell these poor newbies that NJ was west - not north.

These dumb hipsters who refuse to grow out of their Peter Pan Syndrome ain't from NY, that's for sure.

  • adeez

Hell yeah! I'm sure each and every one of them come from the midwest.

Because we real, true NYCers are those who sit home on Saturday evenings and insult others who are having a good time. That's keepin' it real baby!
