World's Most Boring Street Art Gets Gallery Show

Tonight Animal and Mother bring the mysterious B.N.E.'s work off the streets and into a gallery in Manhattan. In anticipation of the event, the NY Times tried to dig a little deeper into the still-anonymous street artist's life. Have you seen his pieces around town? They are simply the letters B N E, and he told the paper that while they have personal meaning, "at this point, it means whatever you need it to mean.”

The monogram is well known by Queens council member Peter Vallone Jr., who has been vocal about his feelings on graffiti in the past. He told the paper, “This isn’t even someone who’s decided to go legitimate. This is an unrepentant criminal who has cost honest taxpayers a lot of money, and he’s profited from it.”

Check out his show, or shake B.N.E. down for your tax dollars, tonight at 595 11th Avenue (you must RSVP). UPDATE: We're told that the RSVP is now closed.

This is the FIRST post I have read by Jen in years where she is not a total fan girl of "street art" or whatever.

Sometimes things are just hype and this is what this is.

Thanks for finally becoming somewhat of a critic, Jen. :D

    Boring Not Engaging?

It's just a basic call for attention, a 'hey, look at me.' But then what? I'm all for 'street art-inspires esoteric gallery art'...but this doesn't any sense any way you look at it. Even Dadaism is rooted in something. These aren't even tags, they're just letters that say nothing. It's like saying your name over and over again. It's a little insane.

There's no commentary, no reasoning. It's the sticker form of turrets. You have a canvas of walls around the world, but you don't have anything to say, except for your initials over and over and over again? Seems like a waste...

some twirp named posterboy was arrested at his show and it was news on gothamist.

basically some dude who alters posters along F/G/L lines, witty work but it caught the attention of the cops. what do you thinks gonna happen to the guy who brags to the times that he goes through 10,000 stickers a month!!!

  • ohgoodgolly

Yeah - using "faggots" at the end is an excellent way to take your good argument and cogent critique and turn it as lame and immature of a statement as BNE's. Might want to leave off that little addendum next time.

I just emailed Animal and Mother New York the following, I encourage you to do the same.

    Bucky,

Please inform everyone involved that, until now, I had never known dullness could be enraging. I can think of few things more trite than street art, but labeling BNE with that cliched title brings shame to a lackluster genre already passed it's prime. Glad you received the publicity otherwise I would never have been able to let you know I think you are a bunch of faggots.

Wishing you nothing but contempt, ridicule and failure this holiday season.

    BNE - Bullshit Narcissistic Exhibitionist

Are galleries so hard up for something "fresh" that they are willing to care about this guy? Can't wait for the scrachiti exhibition they'll be doing next.

I'm sure the gallery would have no problem with someone tagging the shit out of their entrance.

  • kafkask

what the hell? A guy uses pre-fab graphics and a few letters and gets a showing?

The art world is so full of shit, it's unbearable. Thanks, Warhol.

  • hunter.blatherer

The gothamist should have a button for "do not like." But then, they are ever so sensitive so maybe it would be a bad idea.

  • silver
