Bicycles May Now Be Brought Inside New York Buildings

121009bike.jpg NYC's Bicycle Access to Buildings Law takes effect tomorrow, requiring commercial buildings to allow tenants to bring their bicycles into offices using the freight elevator. If your employer approves your request to bring your bike up into the office, he or she can submit a formal request to the DOT, which will then require the person who controls the building to complete a Bicycle Access Plan. It's not really that complicated, and Transportation Alternatives has put together a great manual [pdf] to guide you through the whole process.

Unless the building owner gets an exemption from the DOT, you'll soon be able to keep your precious bike right next to you at your desk, which will also save time commuting to the kitchen and bathroom! "In 24 hours, the doors of many New York City office buildings will open to bike commuters for the first time,” says Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives. "With the same ingenuity and flexibility that makes this city work, building owners can help usher in a new wave of green, healthy commutes."

Sorry, try again some other time. Bloomberg signed it back in August. That's why it's called a "law" rather than a "bill." You can't veto a law. Time to stop smoking pot and move out of your mother's basement.

  • "right next to you at your desk"?

Um, anyone run that by the FDNY? The Only space next to many desks are in the aisle which can't be blocked in case of fire...

That's JDS talking. You've been around Gothamist long enough to know you can't take anything JDS writes in a literal sense. Everything is snark, exaggeration, etc.

A true NY bicyclist doesn't need no stinking, 9-5, fiefdom, super-sized, freight elevator. A true NY bicyclist can just carry his fixie up the stairs.

Thank you. A NY cyclist is resourceful. These whiners are likely suburban imports who demand NY change to their mid-America upbringing.

Time to sell Central Park to fix the city budget to turn it into a Country Club Golf Course, with a plaid dress code.

Landlord: Rent increase effective immediately due to extra carpet cleaning.

Employer: January raises suspended immediately until further notice due to economic conditions.

Riding a bike to work might be green, but healthy? Riding in NYC traffic is dangerous.

FYI bikers: freight elevator operators do not operate like fancy residential elevator operators. They work on their own schedule, and sometimes are with construction folks who may or may not take 10-15 minute trips up and down. You hipster gonna stand there and just wait with the breakfast delivery people? Or you gonna put your hands on your hips and bitch "hey, I have to get to my cube so I can be on facebook all day. i wanna bring my bike up to my office because I can"

  • weenie

and lets not forget the most freight elevators stop running around 5-5:30PM... therefore, we bikers are still kinda screwed when it comes to leaving. what new yorker leaves work before 6PM? tssssssssssssss. and might I add... that birdsh*t is a BRILLIANT way to deter a thief!

  • Gwinny

d'oh, it didn't show up when I refreshed the first time. sorry.

  • Gwinny

EXACTLY. The freight elevators in my building stop running at 6 PM; I'm never out of work by then. I'm sure this little loophole is going to continue to prevent a lot of people from taking advantage of this law.

I've already let my building know how irritated I am at the freight elevator hours, but they cared as much as when my bike was stolen from under their surveillance cameras back in April.

  • Gwinny

EXACTLY. The freight elevator in my building stops running at 6 PM; I am almost never out of here before that. I'm sure this simple fact/loophole is going to be a major deterrent in people actually being able to take advantage of this new law.

I've already let my building know how irritated I am at their lack of understanding on this issue, particularly since I had a very nice bike stolen from under their surveillance cameras (outside) in April.

Oh...sorry, distracted by the utterly creepy unisex American Apparel ad where the couple switches clothes. Is there anything more ridiculously hipster than being able to wear your girlfriend's clothes? Gross.

Anywho...this sounds like a good idea to me. The real challenge will be a rainy day when someone accidentally drags a muddy or greasy tire across the carpet. Still, it would be nice to be able to bicycle to work -- so I hope this works out in practice and catches on.

I recently found out if you mix white paint with little chewed up pieces of cardboard it makes a great birdshit camouflage for your bike. You just paint around the handlebars and frame and bikeseat and it looks like birds went to town on your bike. It's a pretty good deterrent against bike thieves. SUre, you are riding around on a birdshit bike but at least I don't have to go through all this bringing in my bike up and down inconvenience.

  • LICguy

Just in time for the winter. Great!

  • potsmoker

bloomberg IS a jerk, this was passed by the city council and could still be veto'd by the master.

  • potsmoker

most freight elevator operators are total d*cks who treat their elevator like a mini fiefdom.

just try to get your bike past the moving men, deliveries etc who were there before you.

cant wait till the whiny bikers start blogging about not being able to bring their bikes up.

controls the bldg is not the same as who controls the workplace. dont assume every cubicle slave has the luxury of parking space in their offices.

  • thefacts

For sure! These elitist hipsters will have to actually share a cramped space with a bunch of working class joes, some of whom may not even have a HS degree and may be a little bit rough around the edges.

The shame and ignominy of it.
