Rachel Maddow Pwns "Formerly" Gay Author Who "Cures" Gays

In New Jersey, the legislature is poised to vote on whether gays can marry. In Uganda, they're debating legislation to kill them. Last night, Rachel Maddow interviewed an author named Richard Cohen, who says he used to be gay—until he cured himself. Now he writes books helping others straighten up too! His book Coming Out Straight has been cited by the Ugandan proponents of executing homosexuals, because in it Cohen claims that homosexuals are much more likely to molest children. Watch Maddow respectfully hand his ass to him:

If you don't have time to watch the whole thing now, jump to the ten minute mark, when Maddow reads this excerpt from Cohen's book Gay Children, Straight Parents: A Plan for Family Healing: "Among the list of factors that may lead to homosexual desires: divorce, death of a parent, adoption, religion, race."
Cohen replies, "Race? That's not in there."
Maddow: "Yes it is. Here I am, page 75 of your book with your name on the cover. I gotta ask you. Every single one of those ideas is insane to me..."
Cohen: "You're taking it out of context, Rachel."
Maddow: "I'm reading it from your book, dude!"

Also don't miss the part where she asks him if he's a licensed therapist, and he says he's not, because he was the victim of a hate crime!

Those executions are somewhat rare and mostly symbolic. In Uganda, this law could be used for mass killings. Africa has a nasty record of genocide so gendercide fits their skillset.

Poor Richard Cohen, people must confuse him with the liberal newspaper columnist who has the same name.

  • angry_pickle

He is making good money; he gets TV time, a wiki article even. He gets to feel up vulnerable gay guys who go to him for help. And at the end even if he is shown to be a quack/sham, he will safely be retired in a 3rd world country where he can buy a steady supply of local guys.

  • felldownthewell

Writing a book pandering to religious parents of gay children who desperately want reassurance that their child can change is a brilliant way to make money. Look for "Heterosexuality for Dummies" coming this Spring from Felldownthewell, shortly followed by "Gay the Straight Away" aimed at gay parents of straight children.

  • mzimu

Looks like there will still be an anti-gay bill passed by the Ugandan parliament but the death and imprisonment portion will be removed in an attempt to satisfy the religious leaders.

According to Bloomberg News there will however be some measure to support "counseling" for homesexuals that want to change their lifestyle, which is "repugnant to the Ugandan culture." Maybe Richard Cohen will be a prophet for profit who is not appreciated in his own country and beging to counsel Ugandan homosexuals under some government sponsored program. The world is a crazy place!

i watched this last night in 'real time' and it was a beautiful thing to behold. Maddow was VERY polite, VERY professional, and she not only wiped the floor with him, she rung him out and wiped the floor again and again. every time she quoted his book to him, he seemed to not even recognize his own words. he admitted at one point what he wrote wasn't even correct. he took zero responsibility for the hate speech in it that is being used WORD FOR WORD by the Ugandan thugs that run that country.

Go Maddow. Her interviewing skills are the best on TV in years. her probative reporting is second to none. She keeps her cool under the most trying of circumstances. She is the epitome of fair and balanced, even though that phrase has come to stand for anything but that by Fox News.

  • JrzWrld

I've always wanted to meet one of those "cured" homosexuals who says it is a choice.

As Dan Savage says, if it was a choice, wouldn't most women already be gay?

My best friend is an attractive woman with whom I spend most of my time and whom I admire very much as a person. I cannot imagine my life without her. We joke that we are already "married." Both of our families are at ease with the idea of homosexuality as are all of our friends. She also stands to inherit A LOT of money from her parents (we joke that I'm marrying for her money). Add on top of it that neither of us date that much. Frankly, I have EVERY reason in the world to "convert" to homosexuality, and yet the desire to do so is pretty much nil. I like guys, and I like sex with guys. I've even been sexually attracted to guys who I would label physically unattractive. Yet I have not one iota of desire for my best friend. And although boobs seem pretty cool, I have a nice set of my own,so it can't get any better than that.

Every time someone says they "chose" to be straight, I am fascinated. Because I can't figure out how they managed to pick their sexuality like it was a suit they tried on and liked the fit. So much of my life would be so much easier if I was gay! And yet I'm not, and I'm not looking for a way to become so.

Of course I'm just one person, as are these singular folks who come forward claiming that they have a "cure". Not a lot of scientific proof in that.

    Post Of The Year!

  • Dead Himmler

I might not be an expert on this subject (but I do know a gay one) but if someone learns to be gay then why can't they be taught to unlearn it? I feel that they would probably be happier and have a higher society value.

  • robingee

    Oh that Himmler!

  • irvinghowe

i know i'm wasting my time responding to this, but you can't learn to be gay. you either are, or you aren't. you either like it, or you don't, or sometimes you like both. his dubious claims are refuted by himself at the end when he clearly cannot, and will not, directly answer whether or not he's still having "sexual relations" with men. classic closet cover up. but hey, bye his books and maybe he'll learn ya something.

and to casey shain, i'm in the same boat with you. she showed last night what true journalistic integrity is all about and last night i became an everyday watcher and supporter of her.

  • casey shain

the entire point, the ENTIRE point, is NO ONE LEARNS TO BE GAY goddamnit. NO ONE WOULD CHOOSE to have to have vindictive fucks like 75% of the posters on this site hate our guts for no other reason. no one would choose to be ostracized or thrown out of families or be fired from their job or be evicted from their homes FOR BEING GAY. we are BORN this way. B O R N. this is who we are, just like being straight is who you must be. if you're so straight, can you even IMAGINE learning to be gay? c'mon.

this guy has zero scientific facts on his side, and from reading other articles about him, cannot even produce ONE person to support his claim of thousands. it is all about the money to him, plain and simple.

and for your 'edumacation' you would be absolutely floored if you realized how many modern conveniences and scientific accomplishments have been introduced to this world by gay people. we have nothing to prove as far as societal 'worth' goes.

  • mzimu

I have to respectfully disagree with those who say Maddow is making an ad hominem argument against her guest, Richard Cohen. His claim that homosexuality can be cured because he did it himself is a classic argumentum ad hominem. He is basing his claim to cure on personal experience, his and others. Until his claim to cure is validated by the rigors of scientific inquiry, Maddow is right to point out that the current science does not support his claim. Currently science and logic are not on the side of Richard Cohen.

Maddow goes on to questions why he would publish this work, especially since he has no scientific support. I think it is responsible for her to explore the profit motive and to site that Cohen has been censured for ethical reasons relating to financial misconduct and that one of his sources was censured for publishing unscientific data. If one watches the entire clip Cohen admits to Maddow that two of his claims need to be retracted and that he is not backed by any scientific body. I think Maddow was correct and exercised journalistic integrity by questioning some of the claims Cohen makes in his book.

She gave him a platform, they engaged in a discussion, Cohen admitted his book was flawed and promised to retract at least two claims and no one was killed. I wish this type of dialogue took place more often. Thank God and Socrates for the country we live in.

  • Sketto

Someone please just put a private investigator on him. Like Ted Haggard and the similar hypocrites before him, it won't be long before you catch him with drugs and a gay hooker in a seedy motel room. I'd wager on it.

Regardless of your opinion of homosexuality, it's scary that he's not horrified that people will likely be killed because of his book. Any person of normal morals would be deeply upset by that prospect. He's not - he's still selling books and making a buck. It's fucked.

  • arly

Well he claims gays are seeking him for treatment, I can claim I won the lotto yesterday. Were's the proof, the numbers - names and phone#'s of each in writing.

Look he found a niche to make money and he's trying to get his 15 mins. of fame and some bucks too.

A true gay person that seeks those treatments are doing it because of some external pressure (eg.family, church)

WELL I TELL GAYS FORGET RELIGION YOU DON'T NEED IT AND TELL YOUR FAMILY OK YOU DON'T ACCEPT ME TOO BAD. A PARENT THAT DOESN'T LOVE THEIR CHILD UNCONDITIONALLY REGARDLESS IS NOT WORTHY TO BE YOUR PARENT.

  • Mattachine

I think I've seen Richard Cohen at the Web (gay Asian club on 58th St http://www.thewebnewyork.com/)on a Friday night. Totally a Rice Queen!!!

  • arly

2012 is not the end of the world, but there is an end a far much better end. It will be the end of religion.

WORLD PEACE CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED WHEN RELIGION SEIZES TO EXCIST.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SINCE RELIGION WAS CONCOCTED THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO, FOR POWER AND MONEY AND TO CONTROL HUMANITY, THERE HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT HATRED TOWARDS HUMANITY. RELIGION IS A SERIOUS DISEASE AND PLAGUE THAT MUST BE EXTERMINATED.!!!!!!!!!!!

Richard Cohen wants to cure your meat!

  • MarsAttack

JayJay- this man bases his entire career on getting into other peoples' sex lives- trying to convince them that they are simply suffering from a mental disease caused by traumas experienced in childhood. And in so doing spends his time promoting disproven and actively harmful theories about homosexuality. Rachel Maddow was only responding to these disgusting theories and was only speaking of this matter because this self-loathing, manipulative moron opened the can of worms. If he had kept his self-hatred to himself she wouldn't have had any need to speak out against it.

  • nicemarmot

Yeah, I have no idea at all why gay people find homosexuality being treated as a disease offensive. It's like if I wrote a book about something like "Cure your black problems - bleach your skin and become white! Get rid of all that ugly pigment. God hates pigment!"

  • skin77777

it's amazing that people get so riled about other people's sex lives~ who you have sex with and why is your own business. if it's affecting your life and you need to figure out why you have the right to pursue answers through whatever avenues work best for you.

a ugandan zealot wanting to kill gays is clearly insane and this author makes his point that he did not write the book to support the ugandan movement.

rachael's defensiveness and lack of cool get close to obscuring her point here.

  • NannyState

The question is what Cohen and his pals knew about Uganda's agenda before graciously accepting their patronage and hospitality. If they knew nothing (which they will now claim), then they are your garden-variety Christian idiots. If they did know about that sinister legislation then they are complicitous with murderers. If not for the Uganda story, Maddow wouldn't bother bringing Cohen in her studio. Guys like him have been out there for decades.

  • irvinghowe

it wasn't olberman, mathews, beck or limbaugh defensiveness. in light of the fact that his book credits race to being a factor in homosexuality, it is fair for anyone to be defensive. not to mention the fact, that her "defensiveness" came in the form of well prepared facts and simply repeating what this ignoramus wrote in his book, to which he couldn't come up with any adequate responses to.

oops, sorry gretchen, i forgot, he's not a lawyer...

  • hotstepper

    nailed it.

  • Trilby16

Sorry but what does "Pwns" mean? Does everyone know but me?

  • ganghiscon
  • Kevin Walsh

    Why not just say "owns?

    www.forgotten-ny.com

  • Well it comes from the misspelling of owns (typing too fast leads to typing p instead of o). It's a nerdist terminology, like n00b etc. It's no worse or better than any other internet slang that has entered the lexicon. I mean...unfriend is now a dictionary quality word?

  • Trilby16

Thanks. That is some very annoying slang! You can't even pronounce it. Yuck. But thanks!

  • It's pronounced pown (own with a p in front). Don't worry, you'll learn to love it.

  • shovel

I get the impression that Cohen's procreation ritual involved a hole in the sheet (pulled over his wife's head, of course).

What I really want to know is, can I also be "cured" of my heterosexuality?

  • NannyState

For just $10,000 Richard Cohen can cure the gay at his sweatlodge in Sedona Arizona.

  • MarsAttack

This man uses having a wife and three kids as the be-all-end-all proof of his "choice" to go from gay to straight as if having a wife and kids means anything in terms of personal sexuality. If he WERE a licensed, sane professional who knew what he was talking about he would understand that what he just described was the life of a closet-case homosexual whose wife plays the part of the Beard.

I have known dozens of closet cases like this. Married, with kids- only to later come out of the closet anyways (once they find that you cannot, in fact, cure homosexuality) and leaving that same wife he had used for years to prove to himself that he was "cured of the gay".

And all of this also does not acknowledge one of the most obvious things about sexuality: that there is simply no black and white here. The vast majority of humankind actually falls somewhere in the middle of this scale. Sure- some people out there are 100% straight or 100% gay, but there is also that part of the population that is some form of bisexual with leanings in one direction or the other. Countless friends of mine consider themselves gay, but also say they like the idea of sex with women. And I've also met plenty of self-identified straight guys who enjoy sex with men. To them it isn't about who they can have sex with, or who they want to have sex with, but more-so who they see themselves pursuing a relationship with. They can have sex with men and actively enjoy it, but couldn't really see themselves "being with" a guy, and vice versa.

This man is helping no one with these backwards, outdated, self-hating, ignorant, unintelligent theories and practices. He's a self-loathing prick who is trying to make money off other people's self-loathing. He is unlicensed for a reason. I can call myself a nuclear physicist all I want, but that doesn't make me one.

  • hotstepper

i don't see the problem here, it seems that people were coming to him for counseling of their own free will.

furthermore, he is entitled to hold an opinion (albeit unpopular with liberals) and write about it if he likes. if backward nations use literature to enact laws that are in a violation of human rights, it is the laws that needs to be dealt with not the books.

last time i checked, in this country we still have freedom of speech...for schmucks of every stripe.

  • Amanda Harletsch

and this freedom is abused everyday for an infinite number of experts in bullshit and manipulations, such as FAUX NEWS and the whole GOP grass roots force of lunatics. Thanks to the use and abuse of free speech this country has gone to the path of idiocy, counter-intuitive logic and parallel realities.

  • Amanda Harletsch

    Amateurs are better than experts.

    http://nymag.com/arts/all/aughts/62505/

  • moocow

it's not just that - this is a guy, who is 100% still gay, exploiting vulnerable and deeply troubled people for millions of dollars. he's a very wealthy scam artist, whose practices/beliefs/whatever aren't any better those of scientologists, who also believe they can cure the gay - or at least set up their high-ranking celebrity members with beards.

  • irvinghowe

at least scientology's greed doesn't lead to a possible kill bill.

  • JenChungsBaby

Freedom of speech only applies to how the government treats you. Since the guy isn't being arrested or even having his taxes audited, his freedom of speech rights are not being violated.

  • Cautious Pessimist

And Maddow has the freedom to bring him on her show, expose his ignorance, and excoriate him for it.

On another note, why do people bring up the 1st amendment and freedom of speech whenever someone publicly disagrees with something they think? This has nothing to do with freedom of speech. When did Maddow try and stop him from spouting his views? If anything, by bring him on her show, she enhanced and contributed to his 1st amendment rights. If she were to get people together to steal his book from bookstores and then hold a giant book-burning party, THEN you can bring up the idea that someone is trying to infringe someone's freedom of speech.

  • hotstepper

    reading comprehension fail x2.

no where did i say that maddow tried to stop him, it's her show and her guest, fools. bitter emotions are why we have laws for free speech, when an opinion is unpopular these laws become ever more important.

  • Gouda

So you are admitting you are making much ado about nothing. No one is denying anyone else their freedom of speech as you admit and yet you are railing as if someone was.

  • hotstepper

wrong. if you watched the video you would hear all about how he has lost accreditation time and again not because he had harmed anyone, broken the law, or forged educational documents but because of his ideas. so yes that is tantamount to silencing an opinion.

remember, it is homosexuals who are seeking him out for treatment but they are considered benedict arnolds to many in the gay rights movement.

  • T

In an argument, saying "I have the right to do ______" is just another way of saying "I dont have a good answer for this."

  • hotstepper

do you have an accreditation for that opinion?

  • Gregoire

Yeah, duh, thanks. And Rachel has the freedom of speech to rip this douchebag apart for spreading dangerous lies and hypocrisy.

  • GoldenRuler

It's incredible to see how calm she can remain, interviewing someone that is so hateful toward gays - and, let's face it, he is super gay. No wife & kids is going to change that.

I propose that Uganda be demoted from "developing country" to "regressing country".

  • ides_of_march

Iran executes homosexuals too. So did the Taliban until the evil George Bush toppled them.

  • Amanda Harletsch

now they only force women to total ignorance and a life of violent oppression; thanks Bush!

  • NannyState

Those executions are somewhat rare and mostly symbolic. In Uganda, this law could be used for mass killings. Africa has a nasty record of genocide so gendercide fits their skillset.

  • winstonsmith

    what, exactly, is your point? such a f'ing troll . . .

  • longacre

I think the point is homosexuals are beaten and executed in many parts of the world. Why is there this sudden surprise that Uganda is doing it?

Secretive Washington evangelical group advocates for the death penalty & anti-gay laws in Uganda

Sweden stop its aid to Uganda because of this Uganda legislation. U.S. continues with its 200 million aid.

  • Snoopy

Leave Sweden out of this. They have enough problem with this Tiger Woods episode and his beating up his mother-in-law.

Uganda. Now that's a country on my most not want to visit list. Kill homosexuals. Right. A great idea that is the dumbest thing going. What is it with all this homophobia? Most of the gays I meet are well educated and tend to look better than the straights. Except of course for the women side of the spectrum. There are a lot of ugly gay women out there I must admit. But being gay and ugly should not be a crime.

  • felixthecat2

LOL- What happened to Elin's Sweden neutrality?

  • ides_of_march

You really don't like losing anyone to the other team do you? Is being gay like being in a gang, you're in for life or they come after you? If he says he was gay before and is straight now, why do you give a shit?

  • Amanda Harletsch

Nobody that was gay could be "converted" or "recovered" through a program, it is just a big lie for some to believe, those that prefer to think gay is an option, a choice, a lifestyle.

  • Cautious Pessimist

It tends to piss people off when others say they can "cure" your sexual orientation. It gives the connotation that homosexuality is a disease that nobody would ever want (because who the fuck wants a disease?) and therefore needs "curing".

Imagine what you might feel and think if someone wrote a book on how to "cure" being whatever religion you are.

  • jimmy

well, hundreds of books do exist for people wanting to "cure" others of their religion... the only difference here is that nobody is passing legislation that explicitly calls for killing them.

  • JenChungsBaby

Another difference is that religion really can be called a choice. There's no biological component to what religion someone identifies with.

  • airtech1

Uh -- have you read Richard Dawkins, Hitchens or heard the clown Bill Maher lately? Imagine that.

  • Cautious Pessimist

    And they're assholes too.

  • eyekantspel

I think it's because gays are understandably against the idea that being gay is something that can or should be cured.

  • Kojak

Actually, you can become gay without actually being born gay!

    Observe

  • The Lord

Dammit. I shouldn't have clicked on that link.

    Now I'm Gay

  • ixvnyc

Because people in Uganda are getting murdered based on his book now, that's why.

  • airtech1

These ad hominem equivalency arguments don't work: "Because the Columbine kids and, subsequent imitators, are killing other teens because of Marilyn Manson...."

    Ring familiar?

And how about this for hypocrisy's ultimate dilemma: Want to remain a condescending, guilt-ridden white American who loves all, but will rip Africans for their "tribal" post colonial fundamentalism. Espouse loving, tolerant and open mindedness of the superior West, but only if you agree with me. This has nothing to do with calling out human rights in Africa; it's smug and arrogant colonialist views lathering to the top.

  • BDS=(Boycott.Divest.Sanction)

    airtech, good stuff!

  • hotstepper
