John Lennon Died 29 Years Ago Today

1209lennon.jpg

Today marks the 29th anniversary of John Lennon's death. The musician would have just turned 69 this October had Mark David Chapman not shot him dead outside of the Dakota on the night of December 8th, 1980. (Last year Chapman was denied parole for a 5th time.) To commemorate Lennon's life and death, fans will gather once again at Strawberry Fields (CityRoom spoke to the unofficial curator of the Imagine mosaic there). If you stop by, or attend any Lennon tributes throughout the city today or tonight, send us your photos.

There's still time to check out the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex's Lennon NYC Years exhibit, before they close up shop in January. And while you're at work, tune in to East Village Radio, where they're broadcasting a Lennon tribute.

If John Lennon were alive, he'd probably forgive his killer and ask for his parole. As for Yoko, who knows? Maybe they'd have divorced by now if he were alive.

This is getting to be gratuitous. The guy didn't exactly live a humble lifestyle. The music was great but his pontifications really annoy the crap out of me. George Harrison is my favorite.

The movie "Imagine" only proves your point. I agree, George is my favorite also, and his talents are sadly overshadowed by John and Paul.

    True. Major phony.

And although he wrote songs like "working class hero" and proclaimed to be a leftist, a waitress I knew said he consistently gave 10% tips at the old Blum's Restaurant on 57th where he dined regularly.

He stiffed the people he claimed to exalt.

  • NannyState

And the people who exalted him left him limp. (eh, Yoko?)

    RIP Dimebag Darrell

  • t3ch

RIP Dimebag indeed. I was on my home from one of the most messed up nights of my life, and then turned on the radio to hear that.

Amen. Can't believe it's been five years already. Regardless of what any of the guys say, I still believe Pantera would have eventually gotten back together.

Ditto. I met his brother Vinnie Paul at the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas this past March, he was sooooooo cool:)
