Sources: Men Arrested Trying To Repaint Bedford Bike Lane

2009_11_bedfordbike.jpg

We haven't been able to verify this one with the NYPD yet, but sources tell Gothamist that police — and South Williamsburg's Shomrim Patrol — arrested two men suspected of attempting to repaint the recently-removed Bedford Avenue bike lane this morning.

According to tipsters, the neighborhood's volunteer community watch group responded to reports at around 4 am that two men were using spraypaint to recreate a section of the bike lane, which the Department of Transportation controversially removed from a 14-block stretch of Bedford Avenue last week. Police arrived at the corner of Bedford Avenue and Rutledge Street and arrested two suspects, sources said. That story lines up pretty well with this posting by Twitter user WMSBG, which went online about two hours ago: "Police arrested this night two goiyem for re-painting the bike lane on Bedford ave with the help of Shomrim."

According to Williamboard, cycling activists had already repainted some of the recently-removed bike lane late last week: "A few hipsters took on the initiative and repainted the Bedford av bike lane with paint and brushes late Friday night and it looks pretty charming." Another commenter on the messageboard said: "i rode bedford this morning and kind of loled at the new bike lane markers. then some jackoff yelled at me in hebrew and did a fake-out move, like he was going to shove me off my bike." A spokesman from the NYPD's press office said he had not been briefed on the reported arrests and that crimes of this nature aren't always brought to the attention of his office. Sources at Williamsburg's 90th Precinct did not immediately respond to calls.

I have a right to ride my bike where ever I want, lines or not. This is the U.S.A. Dare to trample my rights that trump your Shar'iah and I'll take you on. We don't live in Afghanistan. Step out of the stone age.

Fact is, if anyone purposely body checked me off a bike, I would get off and you forget what happened from there.

  • easton west

Wow. How brave are they to do that! I wish I could be as brave in other things to other than washing my muddy feet on the school's pool fountains. Haha.

  • Raphael

If Shomrim were fake would you be reading about it? Shomrim is very real. If every community had their own civilians looking out for their neighborhoods perhaps there would be less crime. I'm glad they arrested these punks.

Well I don't want to get all philosophical here, But this like what's happening in Prospect Heights, sort of amuses me . Why you ask, Well that's easy, It illustrates that [1] Our local Pols. are corrupt bitches with there hands stuck in the cookiejar . [2] Those same folks ( You all call'em Hipsters) that are now being victimized by the powers that be were the ones benefiting from it a while back ! (i.e -moving into poor neighborhoods and pricing those living their out) You can't have it both ways people, Your ideals may be popular today , But that doesn't guarantee tomorrow will hold the same fate ! I hate using race as a focal point , But when the Jews want something they whine and bitch about it until they get it ! A great example of this would be the Ridgewood bound bus stop for which used to be located at the corner of Nostrand Avenue @ Myrtle on the B54 . It was moved to the end of the block by Spencer St. to Accomendate the "mighty jews" .

I'm from Brooklyn,Coney Island. All you Brooklynites that don't want the newbies around.... Bloomberg is from Boston. He's the one everyone should be pissed at.

He ran for a third term, after we all voted twice for term limits. Let's get our priorities straight here. These kids in Williamsburg have helped this area. It was rundown and boring! No area of this city should be one religion or color. It's all ours. Lets all agree that Bloomberg kisses up to anyone and any group that can help Mr. Bloomberg.

He is the one that came up with all these bike lanes and pedestrian plazas that are clogging up traffic, so taking them away in one neighborhood is suspect wouldn't you agree. He doesn't only just buy votes with money, he's as corrupt as any other politician in New York.

  • Ex Machina

I drive down Bedford Ave everyday, there is plenty of room for the bike lane and then some. It makes sense, it keeps the cyclists safe. WHy they removed? We all know why.

Yeah, I have no idea what you cyclists are complaining about. The new Kent Ave bike lane just over from the previous Bedford lane makes a great angle-in parking lot:

I have a friend whos a cop who tells me on more than one occasion he caught hasidic jewish kids spray painting swastikas on synogogues. The rabbis refused to press charges because in their minds the kids only did it to increase police presence in the area to make the neighborhood safer.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. These are figures for the City of New York and were counted in 2000. According to American Community Survey, the population of NYC grew by about 300,000 since then. I have included the entire table below for clarification. The percentages all are percentages of the total city population, but the periods designate subsets (e.g. Midwest is a subset of 'people born in other state in the US', which is a subset of 'Native', itself a subset of the total. The 115,878 Midwesterners are part of the 798,565 non-New Yorkers, but the Midwest number corresponds with 1.45% of the total city pop.

The data are not perfect since they only show place of birth. I would actually be counted in West since I was born in CA, but I spent my whole childhood in WI, so for all intents and purposes I'm a Midwesterner. This also means that the New York percentage I mentioned (49.51%) includes Long Island, Westchester, Albany, Buffalo, and other places that are obviously not NYC and are often derided as "others" by purists.

As for the regions, I tried to find it quickly, but I have to run catch a bus. I believe that NE includes ME, VT, NH, CT, RI, NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD, DC, but I cannot be certain. West is CA, NV, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, CO, AZ, UT, NM. South is VA, NC, SC, TN, KY?, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, AR, TX, but I'm not 100% certain. FL definitely is South.

Actually, according to this, only 9.97% are born in US, another state. It does seem pretty small, but then again, it still counts for almost 800,000 people. I tend to trust the Census data as one of the best sources for a lot of data, provided you make sure to understand what it means.

I'll try to remember to keep watching this in case you have any further questions. It's really amazing that 36% are foreign.

    NYC Total Population (5 boroughs):8,008,278

    ..Native: 5,137,246 (64.15%)

....Born in state of residence: 3,964,551 (49.51%)

....Born in other state in the United States:798,565 (9.97%)

    ......Northeast: 242,006 (3.02%)

    ......Midwest: 115,878 (1.45%)

    ......South: 368,388 (4.60%)

    ......West: 72,293 (0.90%)

....Born outside the United States: 374,130 (4.67%)

    ......Puerto Rico: 304,168 (3.80%)

    ......U.S. Island Areas: 10,045 (0.13%)

    ......Born abroad of American parent(s): 59,917 (0.75%)

    ..Foreign born: 2,871,032 (35.85%)

    ....Not a citizen: 1,592,345 (19.88%)

A much more scientific statistical sampling taken by The Center For Public Sodomy reveals that NYC breaks down to: Native New Yorker: 52.9%; Reject From Ohio: 44.1% with "Other" accounting for 3% of the city's population. ( and that could include anything like celebrities, Sad Pandas, and Samoans )

I love all the "real" New Yorkers who wanna beat the crap out of all us Midwestern invaders. Let's see here...

According to the US Census, 2000 (New York City):

49.5% born in New York State

52.5% born anywhere in the Northeast

    35.9% foreign born

    1.4% born in the Midwest

Please take the three minutes to get your facts straight before hooting and hollering, since you "real" New Yorkers are in the minority here and "real" Northeasterners (inc. a lot of middle of nowhere places) are barely the majority. Not to mention the fact that most "real" New Yorkers of all ages, races, and income groups whom I meet are very accepting and wonderful people who understand that this city is built on movement.

I'll tell you what though, we'll all go back to our flyover states once you can convince all your rich, snobby parents to leave our states and come back to New York. I can assure you the gentrification will explode. We have the same "natives" whining about being overrun by New Yorkers.

Look, people move to a new place because they are interested in something that place has to offer. Often they bring some really annoying people with them, but generally they make that place a more interesting place to be. This is especially the case here in what could very well be the most multicultural place in the world.

As for registering bicycles, you've gotta be kidding me. The cost of the simple record keeping of such a scheme would vastly eat up any possible revenue, plus bicycles cause almost zero wear and tear, much less than cars since wear and tear decreases exponentially compared to weight.

    http://www.vabike.org/

This is certainly not worth the very occasional hit and run bicycle crash since most crashes severe enough to injure a pedestrian will also disable the cyclist.

How about getting the police to actually enforce rules of the road for both bikes and autos? How about the garbage trucks that routinely barrel through my neighborhood at 45 mph running stop lights?

Anyway, have a nice day either way.

  • Manitoba

I'm having trouble with these numbers, and drawing a Venn diagram doesn't seem to help. Does this imply that 13.2% are Americans, not from New York state, or are they American-born Northeasterners, not from NY state? Seems to leave too small of a percentage of people from the South (including FL) and CA. Also, what does the NE include? NJ, PA, DC? If DC, what about MD, DE and VA?

  • steve dave

this argument is pointless. the bike lane always had vans, delivery trucks and strollers blocking it anyways. what's the big deal if the stripe is gone? it was never possible to ride from flushing to broadway without being in traffic while people play frogger with their kids in buggies anyways.

Kudos to those who recognize that this isn't a Jew vs. Gentile issue, nor is it a hipster vs. non-hipster issue. This is about religious fundamentalists who reject American (and especially New York) ideals of secularism and multiculturalism.

  • Billiamsburg

New yorkers are so open minded we should just have a neighborhood for each religion to run how they wish!

  • mikehouse

As an orthodox Jew from the Bronx who now lives in Williamsburg and rides a bike every day I have to say that "goyeim" is an inherently prejudice term.

    From OED:

    goy (goi)

    n. pl. goy·im (goi'ĭm) or goys Offensive

Used as a disparaging term for one who is not a Jew.

I agree with the guy from Crown Heights, that drivers in Williamsburg/Bed Stuy as well as pedestrians especially on Bedford near Myrtle Ave tend to be somewhat blind when it comes to interacting with bicycles. I've had many instances of them not looking while j-walking, drivers not signaling, etc. This community as well as all the others in NYC need to become aware of the fact the cyclists are a growing commuter demographic and should be treated as such.

Cyclists break traffic laws soley for the purpose of survival and if there was adequate infrastructure to guarantee our safety there would no longer be a need for "reckless" cycling. The lane at 8th Ave could have been a good example of this as it separates cyclists from motor traffic, however because the concrete slab dividing the lanes is so high it becomes quite dangerous as pedestrians routinely do not check for incoming cyclists (and use the bike lane as an extension of the sidewalk) and we are forced to swerve into the divider to avoid them.

  • Spirit of 76

Hogwash. I never break traffic laws when I ride and I don't feel unsafe. A good solution to the pedestrian problem is a good, loud horn like the Air Zound.

  • Sketto

We have car lanes, bus lanes and bike lanes. But because some bicyclists annoy people, bike lanes are controversial. Obviously, cars and buses are more dangerous and actually are involved in pedestrian deaths every day. Bicyclists rarely. Look it up.

But yes, many bicyclists are annoying.

However, if you don't want biking to be safe (in bike lanes) because you have a grudge against bikers who annoy you, then just be honest about it. It's not the bike lanes you don't want, it's anyone at all in the way of your car, no matter what they're doing.

  • mavro

I ride Bedford twice a week. I've never been able to understand why anyone in that neighborhood (Hasid or not) would prefer not to have a bike lane there. Cyclists will obviously use Bedford whether there are lanes or not, as it is perfectly legal to do so with or without a lane and the Ave is a direct route to the bridge, L, etc. The presence of a clearly marked lane provides incentive for riders to be where one would expect them to be (in the lane). It also provides incentive for pedestrians to be cautious and look both ways as they approach the lane. Am I missing something? Do the Hasids not understand this? It seems they are putting themselves at greater risk of injury from bike related accidents. In addition, of all the things to take a stand AGAINST, why would you take a stand against bike safety? It just seems so backwards. What's next, a "no seatbelts" rule for motorists driving through the neighborhood?

I hope my fellow cyclists will use Bedford more than ever - just make sure the helmet is strapped on and the lights are blinking as it sounds from some of these posts like some people want to make biking Bedford even less pleasant than it already was.

  • amolho

to be insulted by these fascists is so degrading

  • Gwinny

    it's no game.

  • macdaddynyc

Oh to hell with all this Jew vs Gentile bullshit. I ride a bike almost everyday and I live in Williamsburg. Removing that bike lane on Bedford is simply irresponsible. That stretch of road was safer with the bike lane there. Now it's a free-for-all again. As usual, someone's going to need to die before the city acts (properly).

  • sam83

As a religious Jew living in Crown Heights, I've been using the Bedford bike lane for a while now, for my weekend rides to the city (yep, shorts, t-shirts and all). As much as it pains me, a lot of the comments above (specifically related to the VERY bad drivers in Williamsburg), are quite accurate. Saying that, people need to take a moment before they type, and try and make sure that their enthusiasm doesn't lead to outright racist rants.

  • Nicholas

wow I am surprised no one has brought up the issue of separation of church and state. what piss poor reason where these bikes lanes removed? It seems like everyone likes to sue the city for stupid reasons "acts of nature" or "no one told me to stop eating trans fats" etc but when the government changes something cause of religious pressure nobody does anything but bitch about it.

And yes Hasidic do drive worth a shit, I routinely ride my scooter (bikers do not chastise me for riding something that uses fossil fuel and has a 2 stroke motor) through the hood and I either almost get run over by a mini van with no brake lights or a gaggle of 6-7 years running wild in the streets.

Great, vigilante neighborhood police bust vigilante neighborhood road crew. As both a Jew and a Hipster I feel qualified to call everyone involved in this affair an arrogant jerkoff.

Fellow Hipsters: you are a bunch of pussies. Learn to bike without bike lanes. Yes, the bike lane should not have been removed but you look like an uncaring selfish prick when you take the law into your own hands. You call the cops when you're mugged by a scary native New Yorker and expect them to do their job, so abide by the laws when they apply to you.

Shomrim: as much as you love to think you're helping the neighborhood with your racist morality patrols, you're just making anti-semitism easy. This isn't the shtetl, you live in a constantly changing urban landscape. Whether you like it or not you share this city with everyone from those scary black folk to the godless drug addled hipsters. You can't ban them from your neighborhood, so grow up and learn to share like a normal person.

  • ABSORB

If it was up to the Hassidic Jew's they'd wall off all of south Williamsburg and send bulldozers out to demolish the surrounding buildings

  • NannyState

  • catsinvasion

"the other direction" also implies a Jews vs. Goyim dichotomy here. This is a culture clash that is not about judaism. I am Jewish but I also ride a bike and support the bike lanes... the Hassidic twitterer is playing into this by saying the two arrested were "goyim" but i'm sure he/she has no idea if that is the case or not.

  • Uptowner

First, I am disgusted by the anti-semetism. However, the removal of these bike lanes reeks of discrimination in the other direction. Since removing these bike lanes has almost no traffic impact, it seems pretty clear that the Hassidic community has gotten them removed SOLELY because they disapprove of cyclists biking through the neighborhood. Can you imagine the uproar if you banned minivans from driving through Bed Stuy? I'm sorry, but this is a city and people have to get around the city. If you don't want to see people who dress differently from you, then you shouldn't be living in a dense city. Shame on Bloomberg for this disgusting bit of politicking, especially since it sold out a group that backed him so vigorously in the campaign.

  • felixthecat2

YES, PLease Female hot cyclist, ride naked in protest. Let me know that date so I can bring my cam.

  • hug0chavez

The antisemitism in a few of these comments is pretty disgusting.

First off, no one needs a bike lane to ride a bike in the city. I ride my bike everywhere, and because I follow the rules of traffic, and I have brakes, it turns out that I've been uninjured and I stay safe.

Secondly, how many of you whiny, fixed-gear-through-red-lights, ignorant, hipster shmucks actually voted in any local elections? Little spoiled hypocrites. Go to a community board meeting and then go register to vote, you little shits. And follow traffic rules. And, my God, stop complaining about cars.

    Hey cyclists

How's about you do a critical mass all through Jew-town every month until they repaint the bike lanes?

  • JacqueMehoff

Oh before I forget, this is what you get for voting for bloomberg. I remember you bikers having that jizz out for JSK and went so far as saying I'm voting for bloomberg because of the biking issue.

    enjoy.

  • ohhleary

And voting for Thompson would've made a difference? He wanted to "re-evaluate" ALL of the city's bike lanes.

  • JacqueMehoff

maybe, maybe not but you get what you deserve.

so if thompson wanted to re-evaluate does that mean he'll remove 14 blocks of bike lanes? I would think he has larger problems to deal with.

and since you replied, for those who say bloomberg is "beholden" to no one, well we see he's beholden to some.

this large voting bloc for one.

  • felixthecat2

  • starrygordon

I rode my bicycle from Bedford-Stuyvesant to Williamsburg Sunday afternoon straight down Bedford; no problem. I don't know what the big deal is.

  • Matt

I commute through South Williamsburg on my bicycle almost every day because I live on Flushing Ave between Nostrand Ave and Marcy Ave. In my opinon these streets are among the most dangerous in New York City. Lee Avenue, for example, doesn't have a traffic pattern painted on it at all, let alone a bike lane. There aren't even any distinct lanes for the cars! Can you say "constant cluster fuck"?!

Pretending that cyclists don't exist isn't going to make them go away. Removing this stretch of bike lane is unsafe, irresponsible, and -- in my opinion -- it is unacceptable.

The Hassidim need to wake up and realize that there are other residents (GOYIM) who live in Brooklyn, and that these residents need to travel through this neighborhood.

  • IvoryJive

Man I sense this starting to boil over seeing all this display of aggressive ignorance. Listen to the totally unrelated hate rhetoric being spilled out in these comments, against jews, midwesterners, and against people riding bicycles. If a cyclist is struck and killed on this stretch of road there is going to be a freaking riot. Again. A stupid driving accident is exactly what sparked the Crown Heights anti-semitic riots 28 years ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_Heights_riot

  • Spirit of 76

Not going to happen. Cyclists generally don't start riots. They may do some kind of protest like blocking Bedford, but if the Shomrim get physical, then there may be serious problems.

"Drivers treat the city streets as if they were an extension of I-95"

First of all, silly exaggerations will convince no one and gets you nowhere. Grow up.

Secondly, when was the last time you saw a pedestrian or a driver paint over a traffic lane? If you cannot cite an example, you tend to prove my assertions about arrogant radical cyclists.

Sorry, but IMHO cyclists are much more reckless and arrogant than drivers.

I have no inherent bias, it has just been from many observation of their respective behavior.

So, what burg did you arrive from, that you want to turn our great city into?

  • Matt

I arrived from Philadelphia, 4 years ago, and I do not wish to "turn" Brooklyn into Philly. Philadelphia has it's own separate issues with bicycle commuters, but that's neither here, nor there.

It is not a "silly exaggeration" that people who drive cars treat city streets as an extension of the interstate highway system. All you need to do is stop and watch the traffic on Delancy St & Norfolk (in Manhattan), or right on Flushing Ave between the BQE & Sands St. (Ft. Greene/Dumbo), or on FDR drive, or Flatbush Ave....etc, etc, etc.

Keep in mind that the maximum (unposted) speed limit is 30MPH in the city. For most neighborhoods that limit is 25MPH. http://www.citidex.com/306.htm

"Frequently"? Try not at all. I think it was two summers ago when Summer Streets started that he proudly proclaimed that he has a bike but he'll never ever ride it. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say he associates bikes with "the enemy" and therefore would never join their ranks.

And how many reckless, arrogant cyclists have killed other cyclists or pedestrians with their actions?

Sorry, but your humble opinion matters little when I'm inches away from being run down by a two-ton death machine while I'm walking across the street in a crosswalk with the right of way.

  • thefacts

Just recently, two people were killed in Philadelphia. One scumbug cyclist hit and ran, typical of many cycling accidents. One person in NYC city in the past year.

That's a lot, considering that the number of cars and the miles they travel, vastly, vastly exceed bikes. Vastly.

Plus, cars must be licensed, registered and INSURED. Bike aren't. If you want more bike lanes, time to grow up, kiddies. Get licensed and insure for starters! At least if a car hits someone, they are traceable and responsible for damages. Cyclists aren't.

I know lots of people struck by reckless cyclists, many more people than I know who were hit by cars.

Sorry, most of the people who don't subscribe to your radical cycling philosophy (That is, Our Shit Don't Smell, because God is on our Side.) disdain reckless cyclists.

"thefacts" has no inherent bias. Except against bikes. By his own admission, he owns a bike but refuses to ride it.

    Cars Kill

Deaths from Cars. Car emissions kill 30,000 people and car collisions kill 46,000 each year in the U.S. (2) Of these, 25,136 were a result of road departure, 9,213 intersection-related, and 4,749 were pedestrians.

"Police arrested this night two goiyem for re-painting the bike lane on Bedford ave with the help of Shomrim."

The shomrim were helping the goiyem re-paint the bike lane!

  • JacqueMehoff

the shomrim patrol was there? thank god.

they do good work, they never start any trouble.

  • neutral observer

Why would anyone want to ride a bike through W/B anyway (with or without bike lanes)?

You take your life in your hands with the broken down huge station wagons and mini vans the Hasids drive; and I use the term "drive" very loosely. It's not safe to drive a tank when these types are on the road.

  • non

It was just a matter of time before the Hasidim got the bike lane removed. They hated about it from day one. Now it will be less surprising when they run more cyclists over while swerving all over the place like it's bumper cars.

Is it too cold to ride though W'burg in my Speedo?

  • hotstepper

    this story make funny.

  • kazubes

If people are going to take the time to get on their phone and report the crime, why not just call the NYPD instead of the Jewish communitys' fake police patrol Shomrim.

  • whatstheproblem

If Shomrim were fake would you be reading about it? Shomrim is very real. If every community had their own civilians looking out for their neighborhoods perhaps there would be less crime. I'm glad they arrested these punks.

  • felixthecat2

Shomrim views EVERY Black person with suspicion. And when a Black citizen of this country rightfully refuses to submit to Shomrim's insane demands to show I.D., answer their intrusive questions or empty their pockets, that Jewish patrol usually gets violent. Months ago, one of their number beat up the son of a Black cop. When the police came to question, Shomrim members feigned amnesia.

  • "Men Arrested Trying To Repaint Bedford Bike Lane"

We live in the strangest of times...

  • felixthecat2

    goiyem? Sounds racists to me.

  • CR

Oh Felix, no one could ever be more racist than you... Well, maybe Amanda Harlach, but still...

  • valeriob

    this is awesome.

  • Amanda Harletsch

CR, Dude! just cite one post where I've been a "racist",

    just one.

Please, dare to elaborate! Dare to use your brain transgressing the rules of "name calling"

You are just to radical to understand orthodoxy in any form is just an obstacle to progress.

  • felixthecat2

I'm not racist, it is you that is racist and anyone who disagrees with your war-mongering is called a racists.

  • grizzzly

Lulz for people taking transit markings into their own hands, but seriously, removing the bike lane doesn't make it suddenly illegal to bike there. As long as you're not riding like a jerkface (which is in no way assumed here, don't get me wrong) people shouldn't be yelling at you when you ride on a non-lane street.
