9/11 Terror Trial Protesters Boo Obama's, Holder's Names

Hundreds of demonstrators protested over the weekend against the plan to try Khalid Sheik Mohammed and four other suspected 9/11 plotters in a Manhattan civilian court.

On Saturday, protesters rallied in Foley Square in front of the federal court complex, arguing that the accused terrorists should not be transferred to New York from Guantanamo Bay, and that their fates should be decided in military tribunals. Actor Brian Dennehy spoke out at the rally, claiming that a civilian trial would be "an uncalled-for ordeal that could be used for political purposes," according to ABC. "This will provide the radicals with a huge forum. Why should they have the normal constitutional protections?"

US Attorney General Eric Holder has defended the plan to try the suspects just blocks from the scene of the 9/11 attacks, stating: "I’m not scared of what [terror mastermind] Khalid Sheik Mohammed has to say at trial — and no one else needs to be either." According to the Post, the crowd at the protest booed whenever the Obama's name or Holder's name were mentioned.

I know these people are not known for logical consistency. But what I don't understand is, wouldn't treating them as soldiers for the purposes of a military tribunal give them more legitimacy than they deserve? Doesn't putting them on trial this way show that one, we are not afraid of them, two, that they are common murderers who deserve to be tried as such, and three, that our system of justice, being something we would hope others would admire and emulate, is up to even this task? Now I see that others on this thread have made the same point. Oh well. Then I agree.

I can't wait for the teabaggers to work healthcare into this conversation...

Right wing fraidy cats. Fear is their defining characteristic.

  • rasputinsghost

We offer them constitutional protections because they're not soldiers, the crime was committed on American soil, and this is a nation of laws, not whims.

  • youngpro

agreed. what a lot of people fail to see is that since these people are not military, they cannot be tried in a military tribunal, simple, period, end of story, no exceptions. This is NOTHING like the Nuremburg Trials in any respect.

people, this is the united states. we have due process, right to fair trial by jury, right to counsel, rights rights rights; so stop making jefferson, washington, madison, addams, et al flip in their graves.

  • ides_of_march

We executed nazi saboteurs caught on American soil after a military tribunal too. They weren't in uniform either.

  • thefacts

The Amagansett Nazi spies were official agents of an organized government with whom we had a declaration of war and who arrived on a German Navy submarine. They were military men.

What government did the 9/11 come from? What does their uniform look like? What is their command structure?

These are all factors that Federal courts have considered in determining the status of captured combatants.

To give these guys a military trial sends the message that we consider them soldiers. A criminal trial sends the message that they are common thugs and criminals.

So, what are they? Dutiful soldiers at war or criminal thugs?

  • rasputinsghost

Johnson v. Eisentrager doesn't apply; they were still sworn soldiers serving a state in a declared war. KSM/etc are not.

Ex Parte McCardle DOES apply; if civilian courts function, they must be used for non-soldiers.

In all the time ides has been putting foot to mouth on Gothamist, I've never seen him so roundly and completely pwned by so many people in one story.

That was WWII and we exiled our Japanese American population as well. However in that war we all fought the enemy.

"...stating: "I’m not scared of what [terror mastermind] Khalid Sheik Mohammed has to say..."

it's enough that 90% of this site's material comes from one source, but if gothamist is just going to copy/paste verbatim, why don't i just read the goddamn new york post itself?? then i wouldn't have to wonder if the author realizes the bias. (and yes, i realized that this was originally a jen chung copy/paste job, but still.)

in any case, i can't determine which were more politically founded - these protests or the RNC demonstrations.

Oh shut the fuck up, you race-baiter. Also, please give me an explanation of the true brilliance I'm sure McCain and Palin would be governing with if they'd won.

  • ides_of_march

Enough with the friggin race card and racial paranoia already. I didn't even make any mention of anybody's race. Get some professional help.

  • Yeah, when Ides connected Obama to Islam it didn't even occur to him that Obama was black-- total accident that Ices was racebaiting with his racebaiting comment. He's just a humble bigot, trying to make his way in the world!

Law professor Denbeaux hit it on the nail when he stated " Gitmo meets Lord of the Flies"

  • nicemarmot

I would have been for the military tribunals if they had, you know, DONE THEM IN THE LAST 8 FUCKING YEARS. Sorry but you can't just keep people indefinitely. Try them, shoot the fuckers in the head and bury them in the desert, whatever you're going to do, just do it for god's sake. But don't tell everyone you've got them and then do nothing. It's like admitting to the world that we don't even know what to do with these dudes, so we just won't do anything. Kind of like the whole war on terrorism. We don't know how to fight it, so we'll just keep firing random bullets off, and maybe one will hit a terrorist sometime.

  • Easy, peasy. Right on.

  • felixthecat2

    +1

Word. And if you're reading this Dennehy, please go back to Connecticut and count your Ratatouille money, you hack tool.

  • thefacts

Exactly my thought, JDS. What credentials does this pompous windbag of a character actor have?

I am sooo.. sick of suburbanite "Victims' Families' dictating what goes on in Manhattan.

Lower Manhattan residents and others throughout the city were victims of the attack and are still being victimized, not by terrorists but by these parasites.

They should STFU, get on with their lives and stay in the suburbs.

  • ides_of_march

You only wish Dennehy read your silly comments.
