One Killed In 3-Car Crash On Bruckner Expressway

2009_12_bruckacc.jpg Earlier this afternoon, a tragic car crash unfolded on the eastbound Bruckner Expressway. A woman in an SUV was killed, while two other vehicles—a postal truck and Tom Brokaw's car—were also involved. Brokaw and his wife were not injured; the condition of the USPS employee is not known. According to MyFoxNY, "Just before the crash, a spool of cable bounced along the far right lane, according to the Brokaws, who were traveling in the far left lane."

The SUV, the right lane, "veered into the middle lane, forcing a mail truck into the far left lane," per the Brokaws' statement, which continued, "As the mail truck careened into the Brokaw lane, Tom hit the brakes hard and skidded along the median. When the mail truck catapulted the median the Brokaw vehicle slid into it."

The postal truck hit a barrier—see the video—while the SUV reportedly flipped over a few times, and the driver was "thrown from her vehicle as it flipped over several times. She landed on the tracks under the Willis Avenue Bridge and was killed, officials said."

A heavy load, improperly secured to a truck, falls loose onto the highway and is directly responsible for someone's death. If and when this spool of wire is found and identified, would some kind of negligence charge be leveled at the truck's owners/operators?

Fox News conspiracy theorists note: Brokaw was traveling in the far left .... lane.

This is really weird. Yesterday evening I received a call from an unknown number.

I googled the number and found out it belonged to a 60 year old who worked for the US Navy and considering Im not even in his age bracket, I am wondering why this person had contacted me. I tried to use a anonymous proxy server to a remote email site just as I received the call using an anonymous mode in a browser.

The Brokaw Anthrax letters immediately came to my mind when they were sent to the NBC headquarters back before the Iraq War had begun.

The location of the accident is by mass transit and not far from the water. Now I can't say what happened because the spool of cable was not found.

Someone could have left a unsecured spool of cable or it could have been used for more nefarious purposes as well.

I remember driving one time where a garbage truck dropped a HUGE BEAM out of it and I was on a road with minimal traffic at the time and I kept a safe distance away so I know stuff like this happens accidentally but I also know times when nefarious intent was also used and someone tries to make it seem like it was an accident.

A spool of cable in New York City sounds like a contractor for telecommunications or electrical service or the like.

I am glad that Tom Brokaw and his wife are okay. We already lost a great guy with Tim Russert.

While the death of the person in the SUV is upsetting, had Tom Brokaw been injured or taken away from us, the impact to society as a whole would have been dramatic.

Lets hope this was an accident and nothing more sinister. But till they find the spool of cable and track it back, I don't think nefarious activity can be ruled out yet.

    But was it nefarious?

She didn't wear a seat belt? That's hard to believe. The only time I don't wear a seat belt is when I'm moving my car in the driveway.

  • nicemarmot

I don't wear seatbelts when I'm in a cab in Manhattan. I wear them pretty much all the rest of the time I spend in cars. Especially on the freeway.

  • OttoBloggo

nicemarmot, there are so many taxi accidents in this city. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and always wear a seatbelt in the taxi. I like to put mine on before the taxi even leaves the curb. Just remember what happened to Princess Diana.... everyone needs to be belted in!

  • Humptydank

Seat belts. Wear your seat belts folks.
