Yesterday a deer was spotted in the water off Governors Island. Apparently the young buck was fleeing New Jersey, according to the Daily News. The paper reports that he swam around 2,000 yards — first spotted roaming downtown Jersey City, and then on the rocks off of Governor's Island.
More video can be seen here and here. A self-proclaimed deer aficionado told the News: "Deer will swim to get away from danger, they'll swim to get to food." (They have migrated from NJ to Staten Island and maybe even Williamsburg.) He added that this buck looked tired and frightened.
Around 1:30 p.m. yesterday, a police boat spotted the deer, shot it with a tranquilizer and brought him to a nature preserve on Staten Island. However, an expert says that deer have a tendency to die after being tranquilized. Sigh. We'll update when there's more news of the deer's current status.

why do some people feel so threatened by a deer? really?
if is that insignificant why would you care?
The deer is exceptional, and it has the will for existence...how is that "wrong"
Some of the "outraged" comments here are merely attempts at denying your fragile human condition that has to be assured through violence and tyranny for the sake of superiority! Let's kill!!
Yeah, what a breed humans are...brutality is just one expression of superiority, hope "superior beings" would just take off to the moon.

Most young bucks fleeing NJ just take the PATH train.

just saying
Why didn't they just extend a wide board down to the rocks for the deer to climb up? Of course, then there would be a wild deer running all over Governor's Island, but a deer on solid flat ground would be a lot easier to catch.

news helicopters, play-by-play reporting, NYPD boats and tactical support, animal control, viewers on TV and the web...all for a friggin' deer.
its times like these that the bubble mentality of urban-dwellers truly reveals itself. nature: just something you gotta tranquilize every now and then.

I've heard that global warming has caused some recent meltdowns of the polar caps where Santa's stables are up north... and, this does look a little like either Prancer or Vixen. I guess Santa will be a little late this Christmas.

deer apparently fight really hard to resist tranquilizers. seems cops in some cities have even taken to tasering deer. if these cops - who are supposed to be responsible for rescuing them - treat animals with such low levels of compassion, how do you expect them to treat other humans ?? when animals get into a situation putting either themselves or others in danger, we "help" by causing them even more fear, anxiety, and discomfort. obviously the safety of others is a consideration, too ... to protect bystanders from wild animals, but it's just one consideration. of course there are situations where there is no choice but to tranquilize an animal, especially in medical situations ... even times when euthanasia is perhaps the most compassionate way. same goes for us too, yes ? a different species of animal.

Ok so you are saying kill the sucker rather than try to move it back to the woods. Such compassion.

It's hunting season right? Poor thing was probably trying to dodge the scope that was aimed at him.

mmmmm...venison.
nicemarmot
I dunno if you want to eat that venison. It came from Jersey, god only knows what it's been eating.
tommyc_37
nicemarmot, have you been to NJ? If so, you'd know that much of NJ's land is wilderness, which is where, um, deer live. So whatever it was "eating in Jersey", it's a heck of a lot better and healthier than anything it'd be eating in NYC.

There is a Superfund site along the Hudson River in Edgewater. It is mainly a grassy patch of land dotted with tall shrubs that is partially surrounded by a tall fence. Its been there for years awaiting funds for a cleanup. But one day I saw 2 huge deers in there. And they were grazing on the vegetation.

tommyc, have you been to sense of humor? It's really a great place where you don't take everything you read on the internet seriously.

OK FelixtheCat what is the story regarding deer and tranquilizers? I can't believe everything I read.

The impact of the tranq dart can cause internal bleeding. I play paintball out in PA a couple times a year with my company and they always warn of a night in jail and a $5000 fine for shooting a deer because of it. If they get shot, they can bleed internally and suffer a slow death, not a lot of fun. Shooting your manager in the head with a paintball... very fun :)
