Catholic League Pissed at PETA

phppjPrzZPM.jpg
See the full ad here
Model, actress and animal lover Joanna Krupa is the latest face (and body) to be splashed across a PETA ad. The "Angel for Animals" theme, which has Krupa bearing a cross against her bare body, isn't sitting too well with everyone, however.

PETA says: "Joanna urges people to always adopt and never buy animals from a pet store or breeder. Puppies sold in pet shops typically come from puppy mills, where dogs are raised in cruel conditions and forced to live in tiny, filthy metal cages without any socialization or exercise. Every puppy or kitten who is bought prevents an animal in an animal shelter from finding a home." True enough!

However, Catholic League president Bill Donohue in New York calls PETA out for treating animals unethically (saying they "killed 95 percent of the adoptable pets in its care" last year). His real problem is with the whole cross thing, though. He says, "Now the animal killers have launched a Christmas campaign that exploits Christian symbols. It features Playboy queen Joanna Krupa... she appears 'as a winged angel, covered by a carefully-placed crucifix.' Once again, the target is pet stores. The fact is that cats and dogs are a lot safer in pet stores than they are in the hands of PETA employees. Moreover, pet stores don’t rip off Christian iconography and engage in cheap irreligious scams." [via Village Voice]

Do something similar for Rahmadan, cowards.

  • DorothyMick

Isn't PETA just alienating potential supporters by using this advertisement? I know blasphemy is the cool thing to do these days, but I wonder if it will actually help them get their point across.

  • Krooklyn

    Dayamn!

    That is all. Thank you.

  • felixthecatSUX

Also, I love how I post a tounge-in cheek comment to the article and you come back with a sexist personal attack directly at me. That really lends credibility to EVERYTHING you post here ALL DAMN DAY. GO. OUTSIDE. ALREADY.

  • felixthecat2

You're one fugly woman. Now go fuck yourself since NO ONE else will .

  • felixthecatSUX

I guess I should feel bad for you because you were born with no sense of humor. Must get boring sitting at the computer all day because no one will invite you out cus you take everything so serious and get your panties in a twist when someone tells a joke. At least you have the internet!!

  • felixthecat2

NO feel bad for yourself since you are fugly inside and outside. You wish you would look 1/2 as beautiful as this angel. Now go fuck yourself since no else will. enjoy.

  • felixthecatSUX

LOL I am fugly inside and out and unfuckable? Do I have the Cooties too? Grow up.

  • felixthecatSUX

really? Fugly? I saw Mean Girls too. That's a great flick. Before you have your 50th heart attack over something someone posted here today, check into what sarcasm is. Get a life already. Step awayyyyy from the computer. There is a whole world outside of your computer screen felix. Do you actually want to help change the world or just complain about it?

  • felixthecatSUX

It must be sad going through life not knowing what sarcasm is. Having to be pissed off and offended so deeply by blog commenters that you make death threats against others must be exhausting.

What does PETA have to say about all those feathers on her wings? Where did they come from, hmm?

While the grammar is still lacking, unless you live in NC, you are citing another post. The appropiate way to post such things is to enclose the post in quotes, feel free to append the link, and then cite where you got it from.

We have the ability to Google for ourselves, so keep your offerings as yours, and offer others as theirs. Cite properly, quote others properly, and append with your comments. Cut and paste comments are just an echo

of your symapthies. They also dilute the message you wish to convey. While your heart may be in your own right place, your literary skills are greatly lacking. This not only detracts from the point you are trying to make, it also makes it confusing for some who may wish to argue or downright piss you off & enjoy the fun. Thank you.

  • Mr Mel

I thought I'd never say this, but in your case Felix was right.

  • felixthecat2

    +1. LOL

  • felixthecat2

ETA picks up animals slated for death by gas chamber or 22 rifle to put them down by the more humane method of lethal injection. (gas chamber: as in injected with a paralytic agent so that they suffocate while their organs seize up in a cinder block cell). The animals, according Daphna Nachminovitch of PETA (who talked to the shelter) said there was never any question about "finding them homes". Only a peaceful death. I happen to live in NC, I know they shoot and gas animals still here. The shelter I volunteer at puts fully a third to sleep. Thanks to hack jobs like this, the shelter in question has resumed painful gassing as opposed to letting more humane groups take them. I guess they were embarrassed about the "littering". Ms. Saunders, you & your husband's hatred for anyone who does jibe with your extreme right wing agenda is well known. Get your facts rather than just google the latest corporate propadanda from CCF (or do you two work for Rick Berman)?

Not true. PETA's own spokespeople say that they are opposed to no-kill shelters and simply don't have the room to care for the pets surrendered to them. They kill animals surrendered to them by owners who are misled to believe that PETA is "humane" and operating a legitimate shelter. They killed 96% of the animals surrendered to them in 2006, which is a number far higher than any other group in the country.

If PETA were truly concerned about the euthanasia methods used in some shelters, they could surely campaign about them and try to effect some change. Lobbying for legislation to ban the use of gas would be a good start. That would require them to actually lobby for the welfare of animals, though, and we know they don't do that. Instead they choose to run a slaughterhouse.

  • dgeee

Naked little boys getting stuffed up the ass by Catholic priests... no problemo. Naked women doing a public service... now that's sinful. Catholics are spiritually lacking neanderthals.

yes, guy on the internet, over a billion people are exactly as you say, completely NOT outraged by that too and exactly the same!

I just noticed that if you click for the full ad, you can see the most beautiful pair of blue eyes. That is on the Staffie (top row, third from the right). I think I'm in love.

  • MrManhattan

Protesting puppy mills, raising Bill Donohue's blood pressure AND lookin' good while doing it?

Triple Win for PETA on this one!

  • S.K.

Why is the Catholic League the only Christian group that's speaking out? Are the Protestants not offended?

  • felixthecat2

Perhaps the Protestants understand that people should be appalled by how we as a society devalue God's beautiful creation. What the big deal that a beautiful women is holding a cross and wants to be an angel for the poor puppies?

  • HOTCUP

because it's sexualizing the symbol of god, basically?

the real answer is that protestants by definition just don't have anything close to the organizational capacity that the catholic church has to speak out against his kind of thing.

  • robingee

Wah wah wah angels aren't even real, shut up Catholic League. Aren't they bored with Christ/Angel/Religious imagery used for commercial purposes? I am. Who cares.

  • youngpro

Catholics, myself included, should be apalled here. What a disgrace, using the single most important icon in the Church over a naked woman's body, those fucking attention whores. What right do they have to act in such a blatantly offensive manner.

I JUST made reservations at Sardi's where I'm specifically eating a big fucking steak tonight, so you can thank yourself, PETA.

  • mdow

I think the right you're looking for is provided in the first amendment.

  • robingee

    Naked human bodies are unholy!

  • dadoc

But nice ones are soooo tasty!

  • dadoc

You have to realize it's just both groups making press for themselves. Neither cares about their purported "mission" or offending anyone. It's all a game of garnering media hits and bucks.

Don't let anger cloud your judgment.

Go for the TBone for two at Knickerbocker's, start with the caviar pie, end with the chocolate souffle. You'll enjoy it more, and still make your own personal point.

Sardi's is hardly worth the effort.

  • NannyState

I hope she ain't one of them bleeding saints, I only got time for a quickie.

  • dadoc

PETA's jus angry because Jesus (in the literary fable) fed the thousands on loaves and "Sea Kittens".

    Let's see... PETA, RC Church....

    Equally deluded.

As are all extremists and believers in imaginary friends.

  • youngpro

i/we/everyone have a right to religion just as you have a right to not choose one. back off and stop infringing, thanks.

  • dadoc

Sorry, but with respect for your feelings regarding religion, feel free to worship how you choose and enjoy.

My views are my own and infringe on nothing of yours. But there is no need for me to offer reverence to a concept foreign to my logical self. Religious fervor has no right to attempt to infringe on free thought, despite its best efforts. I guess it's the word "infringe" that I object to. Guess to some people the expression of a contrary opinion triggers the need to play the race-homophobic-Con/Lib-antisemitic-persecution card.

    Deal with it.

  • nicemarmot

The reason religious people react to contrary opinions in this way is that they fear it will cause them or others to doubt their faith. It's like how the crazy fundies where I grew up really hated the internet: it kept providing all this damn information and entertainment and kids weren't paying so much attention to their doom-and-gloom anymore! Similarly they try to repress science or anything they feel might turn people against their illogical stances on many issues.

  • felixthecat2

    +1

  • dadoc

Yeah, yeah, I know all that. Was just trying to be nice. My bad. Just making my point, can't change their minds but have to keep them in line.

You Gotta Pay The Troll Toll To Get Into The Boys Hole

  • felixthecat2

Yes this catholicc hypocrites love little boys' holes.

  • mdow

i nominate that for comment of the week.

  • HOTCUP

this is the best thing you have ever said, whatever the hell it means. you are the reason i come back to gothamist everyday.

  • felixthecat2

  • HOTCUP

just stay away from my butthole, i guess.

  • dadoc

Even through your usual atrocious writing, I am quite unable to determine what you are trying to say. Whatever it is, I'm sure it's demented and hateful. Please count to ten before posting and try to make it intelligible so we can know why we're laughing at you. Thanks.

  • felixthecatSUX

    well said!

  • evbo

Go Felix! You crack me up.

  • mdow

I want to say the Catholics are just mad because it's not a little boy, but that would be in poor taste, I'm sure.

  • thefacts

Knee jerks are a little slow this time of year.

And the emphasis here is on 'jerks'

  • mdow

Right. Condemning the institution that fosters pedophilia makes me a jerk. Not at all my fault that their reputation tends to precede them--they worked at building that reputation over decades (and the work they did over the last few centuries has really helped a lot too, but I digress). I tend not to care when an institution that supports pedophilia gets offended by something, and I tend not to care when supporters of an institution that supports pedophiles want to frame it as though I'm on the wrong side. I'm surprised by the support for boy molesters implied here, really.

  • thefacts

    Your hatred is so evident.

Your myopic focus on one issue is a mere outlet for your prejudice.

    Go on. Continue.

Ignore the immense charity work done not only in NYC, the USA but throughout the world.

    Ignore Mother Teresa.

Ignore the progressive Maryknoll missionaries developing infrastructure throughout the world.

Ignore their murders by right-wing death squads.

Ignore the wonderful school system which provides cheap quality education for minorites.

    Ignore the hospitals.

Ignore the hospices for the dying, the elderly and AIDS patients.

Ignore the the assistance to those in need.

    Ignore the soup kitchens

    Ignore, ignore, ignore.

Continue ignoring, continue to be ignorant, and continue to hate.

  • felixthecat2

Hello, we give them money to do such charity but it doesn't negate all the boy's holes that the nasty hypocritical priests plowed.

  • Sketto

Personally, I don't care how much charity work pedophiles do. Not sure why you find charity a legitimate offset to the catholic church's history of crimes against nations, religions and children.

  • thefacts

Personally, I don't care about the hateful opinion of narrow-minded bigots.

  • mdow

Speaking of narrow-minded bigots, care to tell us where the church stands on the issue of gay marriage?

Also, is the world still flat to you, and do condoms still not reduce the transmission of AIDS? Is it one and not the other, or you still sorting things out?

Some good reading for you here, by the way:

    Poor symbols being exploited...

  • ides_of_march

I think I've go buy a couple pounds of veal at the butcher this evening. Funny how I get that urge every time these peta nutjobs pull a juvenile stunt like this.

  • felixthecatSUX

Oh good! Can you save me the blood? I'm thirsty!!!! Don't let Felixthecat2 catch you posting jokes about veal...

  • mdow

Having an imaginary friend is fairly juvenile too, isn't it?

  • Dead Himmler

    Stay classy Felix!!

  • felixthecat2

    too late.

  • zodak

omfg! this is the best argument for intelligent design, ever.

  • marzipan

    you are a classless wonder.

  • felixthecat2

This guy is a fucking idiot. Doesn't he know about puppy mills. It is ok to sell God's creation. Fucking asshole. I am calling his office tomorrow to rip him a new one. Was he drink when he made such ignorant comments.

  • Mr Mel

    No he wasn't drink.

  • felixthecatSUX

PETA sucks. I'm a carnivorous fur wearing female Jew and this offends me. I hope they demonstrate near me, so I can throw this bucket of fresh veal blood I've been carrying in my purse at them...

  • Mr Mel

As far as Felix is concerned, the offending word here is Jew.

  • Gothamist_Cynic

It always piss me off that religious types have no respect for animals.

  • Mr Mel

They have respect for animals. It's people they don't respect.

  • felixthecat2

Worry for the altar boys and let PETA saves animals. I support PETA over my own church. God is about compassion.

  • thefacts

If you're Catholic, then your should follow what your savior said was the Greatest Commandment: "Love thy neighbor as thyself." He never said, "Love your pet as yourself", or anything like it, did he?

In fact, he said, "Consider the birds: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?

So your own God tells you not to worry about animals because you are better than they are.

Yet you constantly abuse your neighbor on a near daily basis on this blog, lending credence that PETAphiles are self-hating humans.

  • felixthecat2

YOu really are lost if you don't understand that animal cruelty is an act against God's order.

  • felixthecat2

STFU catholic church. I'm catholic and I approve this message. Just for that I will redirect my donations for you to PETA. Shame on you.

  • whatstheproblem

I think the church will be fine without your dollar in the basket every week.

  • ides_of_march

PETA are nothing but a bunch of attention-craving brats. Their concern for animals comes in a distant second to grabbing the spotlight for themselves.

  • Spirit of 76

If PETA wants to get some donations, they should sell that as a poster.

  • ides_of_march

Let them try that with a copy of the Koran instead of a Crucifix and watch the fun begin.

  • HOTCUP

    that's what i was thinking.

  • thefacts

Of course! Catholic bashing is the last taboo of the Politically Correctoids!

Say a prayer for the demented.

  • Mr. Shankly

    a small copy, kthx

  • kazubes

Stupid ad, how does this promote animal adoption other than Peta trying to garner more attention for themselves.

  • Daniel

how do you not realize you answered your own question.

  • Mr. Shankly

    Scha-wing!

Silly me, giving up religion for Lent.

  • tijuanatornado

PETA has the worst ideas ever, they manage to piss someone every time they come up with one of their ads....

  • JenChungsBaby

    H....ho...h...hol...h...hh..h.hh....hh...holy....HOLY MOLY!

  • felixthecat2

I just clicked on the full ad, HOLY MOLY, Jesus,Mary and Joseph. This is a beautiful Ad. What the hell is wrong with Donohue? He only likes little boys?

  • thefacts

    Has PETA no shame?

Further exploitation of women from the PETAphiles who scold you for exploiting a cow when you're having a hamburger.

I had a supervisor who was a major PETAphile and she was the most miserable, misanthropic person you'd ever want to meet.

But she loved her baby seals.

  • hotstepper

can't i enjoy this babe exploiting poster while munching a burger? deciding between the two just doesn't seem fair.

This isn't Twitter, you can spell out the whole word.
