Sharpton's Daughter, Ex-Wife Obscene Before Arrests

2009_11_obscene.jpg

The ex-wife and daughter of Rev. Al Sharpton shouted obscenities at cops before they were cuffed after a traffic stop in Harlem, according to police reports. When Dominique Sharpton, 23, was pulled over for running a red and crossing a double yellow while passing a slow-moving unmarked police car on Oct. 30, she purportedly told officers: "This is f------ bull---- ... You were driving too slow. I have a play to go to ... Get the f--- off me! You can't harass me! Why the f--- am I getting a summons?"

At some point, Sharpton called her mother, Kathy Jordan, 53, who arrived at West 110th Street and Eighth Avenue and reportedly stated: "Why the f--- are you locking her up? ... Get your f------ hands off her." The obscene quotes came to light as Sharpton and Jordan appeared in court yesterday over their charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, obstructing governmental administration, and harassment. Their lawyer, Michael Hardy, unsuccessfully attempted to convince the judge to dismiss the charges by arguing that their rants should be protected by the first amendment. "Since when does a verbal objection become criminal in America?" he said.

When the officers decided to arrest the women, the situation became more physical, according to cops. Sharpton allegedly "flailed her arms" to avoid being cuffed and "pushed her feet against the police vehicle to resist being placed inside said vehicle," creating a "public disturbance." Jordan purportedly "grabbed the handcuffs" from a Housing Authority sergeant and "twist[ed] her body away from police officers." The two are due back in court on Jan. 19. For his part, Rev. Al Sharpton has kept mostly out of the conflict, though he wrote on Twitter earlier this month: "I cannot imagine how two unarmed women with no record, could be taken in cuffs from a traffic dispute with NO personal or property damage involved."

Like everyone else, the cops found Dominique Sharpton resistable.

  • ANGRYGOD11

As much as I hate Al Sharpton, he can't DECIDE to get involved in any legal matter with his adult daughter and his ex-wife that doesn't directly involve him.

For all we know, they might despise him.

And the apple falls ever so close to the tree. Surprise, surprise.

  • Steven

Surprise he didn't play the race card.

There's the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly when it comes to cops. But when you cut off a unmarked police vechile by crossing over the double lines then you give all 3 types a reason to pull you over. Throwing a attitude and cursing makes it even more enticing to arrest the 2. The cops were just doing their job! Now while many are going to say "they should be fighting real crime, blah blah, etc" last time I checked what they did was clearly against the law. Now I'm sure the cops could have let her go but would you if she was cursing and screaming at you? I know I wouldn't!

Before this goes any further, let’s make sure that we remember who we are talking about. AL SHARPTON! He used to be the most talked about, Googled, face-attached-to-a-dartboard black activist out there. He was the original “Inflammator” and the longest job he has ever had was the hour-and-a-half he hosted Saturday Night Live for. And, now? He’s keeping the lowest profile possible because he doesn’t seem to want the publicity?

If you want us to focus, then you should have us focus on the right thing. The article is about the alleged behavior of Sharpton's daughter and ex-wife, not the good reverend himself.

  • starrygordon

No, it isn't. It's about Al Sharpton. Any stick will do to beat a dog, and the Reverend Al is one of New York's favorite beating dogs. He must be doing something right if so many people hate him.

If cops are allowed to talk to us any way they want then we should be able to talk to them any way we want. Tit for tat.

Nice language for a reverend's daughter. Simply divine.

  • imadick

yet another case of a slow driver making it dangerous on the streets.

  • Barbj8

I always find that people take me more seriously when I enhance my rage with Fuck.

  • valeriob

It's a great filler for all those voids in intellect.

  • starrygordon

This is an example of how free speech disappears when the police show up, and you all go along with it. So don't be surprised when it disappears more completely in the future.

If free speech doesn't include the right to tell the police to go fuck themselves, it doesn't mean anything.

  • FrankMartin

And what about the limits to free speech. A cop writing a summons for pretty clear violations shouldn't have to do it with some crazy asshole yelling "fuck" this and "fuck" that non stop.

I can see a few fucks being covered by the 1st. But after a few f-bombs what are you doing. Excercising your rights, hardly. I think at some point it is anger and rage not some noble act. And if being an uncooperative asshole causes the whole ticketing process to take longer? That wastes time and money and there should be additional charges possible if you become a total fuck while a cop tries to write you a moving violation summons.

  • starrygordon

I simply pointed out the undeniable fact that if people have the right of free speech, they can say "Fuck you" to the police without being punished for it. I understand that most of you don't believe people should have that right.

  • hotstepper

resisting arrest is not free speech.

  • valeriob

And being under arrest temporarily negates your right to those freedoms. Hence the part where you're not able to leave, and such.

    +1

  • rschnabel

    Gothamist,

You're inciting a riot with all the Sharpton haters on this site. Hahaha.

  • hotstepper

sounds like the Sharptons preach at the Church of Fuck.

"I cannot imagine how two unarmed women with no record, could be taken in cuffs from a traffic dispute with NO personal or property damage involved."

    More like

"I cannot imagine how two police officers giving a routine summons to an irresponsible driver could result in flailing, resisting arrest, public disturbance, and overall delinquent bitching with a hint of entitlement."

  • jibbly

    "You were driving too slow!"

Looks like someone needs to go back to driver's ed 101.

  • faprilano

the Sharptons being classy as ever...........

  • The Entitlement Generation.

  • jaycjay

Which one would that be? This is a mother and daughter, so two different generations.
