Dogs Rescued From Puppy Mills And Shelters Arrive In L.I.

2009_11_rescueddogs.jpg

About 50 dogs rescued from puppy mills in Utah and overcrowded shelters in Missouri arrived in Long Island on Friday, where they will be put up for adoption before the holidays. The pooches, which were saved from filth, abuse, and the risk of euthanasia in September, enjoyed a special Thanksgiving meal of "canned turkey with potatoes and carrots; duck and sweet potato dinners, and bagged pheasant" at their layover in Chicago before flying to New York.

The dogs — mainly small breed dogs including Yorkies, shih tzus, Pomeranians and terriers ages 4 months to 3 years — will be put up for adoption by the Best Friends Animal Society at the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington as early as next week, reports Newsday, which also has a photo gallery of the hounds. The animal-only airline Pet Airways flew the pooches in the main cabin, not the cargo area, and picked up the bill, which would usually be about $300 per dog. Its definitely a case of more potential adopters living in the Northeast. I know Bideawee (and many other shelters) go to the south to pick up puppies and other highly adoptable dogs from high-kill shelters and have no trouble placing them with families here. Unfortunately, Animal Care and Control has about 50+ adoptable pit bulls right now but these small breeds (good for apartments) are much easier to find homes for and most of the pits will likely be euthanized.

i don't understand when dogs/cats are taken from one state to another to be adopted. i mean, aren't our shelters full of dogs needing to be adopted? seriously, i'm all for helping pets- though i don't want to get into the kill/no-kill debate - but, how can flying them across the country help?

what am i missing here? aren't our shelters full?

If I had to guess, there are more potential adopters in a high population place like NYC than in Utah. Plus there's definitely a demand for small breeds in cities? That's my theory.

Just great. Kill all those sweet little turkeys, ducks and pheasants to feed a bunch of street urchins. How about killing some geese instead?

  • Puppy Mills exist all over and are the primary suppliers of most pet stores .. The best way to go is direct to a breeder. Most quality breeeders only breed a couple litters a year depending on how many females they have and the best breeders want to meet and basically "interview" anyone that might get one of their puppies

The best way is to adopt them from sheltesr. They coordinate with other shelters if you are looking for a specific breed. Dogs shouldn't be sold like commodity, they are living beings. For every dog breed, they are over 100 dogs put down.

Funny, but I think that 15K fare could have gone a long way toward caring for needy animal in Utah. But I guess media coverage is more important than appropriate care for animals. Wish I had room, but already maxed on comapanions for now. Somebody take good care of these guys.

Why does Gothamist still use newsday as a source? It's not free anymore unless you have the Dolan's internet.

Im gonna snag me one of those. I need a replacement one. My dogs are never durable enough to live the normal life expectancy.
