Elderly Couple, Walking To Church, Killed In Hit-And-Run

2009_11_sihr.jpg Last night, a couple in their 70s were fatally struck by a vehicle as they were crossing a Staten Island street to attend a church mass. The Staten Island Advance reports, "Lillian Sabados [77] was pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, at 4 this morning. Her husband, Peter S. Sabados, 78, was pronounced dead shortly after the 7:15 p.m. accident in front of our Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church."

The couple had been crossing New Dorp Lane at 3rd Street when a Ford Econoline van, which did not stop, hit them. The Post reports that a priest from the church "rushed out and performed last rites." The couple had been headed to Thanksgiving Eve mass and had been carrying canned goods to donate to the needy.

According to the Advance, Allmir Lekperic, 26, was later arrested and "charged with leaving the scene of an accident with fatalities, and driving with a suspended license." The paper also notes the cruel irony of the tragedy: "Just hours before" the Sabadoses were killed, "parish leaders met with city officials to discuss dangerous traffic conditions around the church and its school."

Addressing "dangerous traffic conditions" has little to do with that fact that a selfish pile of trash murdered two elderly people. This is completely on "Allmir" whatever the fuck kind of name that is. Is he from Middle Earth?

It's mostly on him, but not completely. There's a sort of herd mentality that if somebody else can speed down that street, you can, too. DOT should put more speed bumps in this city, although that would make life difficult for snowplow drivers.

And don't ruin your indignation by resorting to racism.

Maybe the priest should have "rushed out and performed CPR" instead.

You would perform CPR on living people? According to the article, they were still alive when the priest gave last rites as they were being taken away in ambulances.

Like most of America, Staten Island is car country and totally worships the automobile. Although New Dorp is densely populated, yokels rush up and down New Dorp Lane, its "main street", as if they were out in Wyoming. God help you if you get in their way. The worst day of the year to be out is the day before Thanksgiving because everyone on the streets is in a hurry, ill-tempered, and angry. I guess the whole business is part of enjoying the holidays in the U.S.

It's the same way in Manhattan. Drivers and cabs think Manhattan streets is the NYS thurway.

Heartless, gutless, and about to be jammed up the ass in Rikers, are these pussies. R.I.P.

Vroom, beep beep, honk honk, outta my way I'm a motorist!

the motorist shouldnt be charged, he is doing gods work

especially since the priest will proclaim their deaths are part of gods master plan on sunday.
