With Eye On White House, Lou Dobbs Considers Senate Run

2009_11_loudoubbs.jpg Days after leaving CNN earlier this month, speculation began that Lou Dobbs might consider running for Senate in 2012, challenging Democrat Robert Menendez. Now he's been confirming that the thought has crossed his mind—as has the idea of running for President at some point.

Earlier this week, Dobbs said he was thinking about the White House and that he was "be talking some more with some folks who want me to listen to them the next few weeks." His spokesman Robert L. Dilenschneider told the NY Times, "I think Lou is realistically saying, [a White House run is] a long way off, but if he did run for office there’d have to be an intermediary step, such as the Menendez seat." The Times reports that Dilenschneider "said Mr. Dobbs was impressed by Republican gains in New Jersey in November and by President Obama’s sinking popularity."

However, Republicans in his community are skeptical of his appeal, with one saying, "I don’t even know anything about him politically. I know he was a Republican and now he’s an independent. So, say he comes back to be a Republican. Is that really who he is?"

Well, it seems that Dobbs is trying to figure that out himself: The Wall Street Journal reports, "In a little-noticed interview Friday, Mr. Dobbs told Spanish-language network Telemundo he now supports a plan to legalize millions of undocumented workers, a stance he long lambasted as an unfair 'amnesty.'"

At best he's a cringe candidate.

  • MrManhattan

He's a "cringe candidate" in New Jersey.

In New York, he's a "Puke candidate".

Of course New Jersey can make you puke without a candidate, so I'm not exactly sure what my point was.

You retain your title as the king of lame ass Jersey jokes on Gothamist. Good job!!

Jokes must be funny. It's a prerequisite............ You really are one of those ineffectual NY'ers who tries to gain personal relevance through your zip code. It's okay. Someone will make you feel special one day. Hang in there champ.

    Mr. Manhattan hearts New Jersey.

    Indeed.

  • dignam

Yeah, whatever. When is the media just going to say, "The Republican Party is devoid of leadership except for the tin-pot dictators masquerading as talk-show celebrities. Other tin-pot dictators masquerading as media figures will inevitably attempt to throw their oversized hats into the appalling carnival called politics"?
