Protest To Keep 9/11 Trials Out Of NYC

2009_11_ksm.jpg

Opponents of the Obama administration's plan to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other suspected terrorists in New York City will hold a Dec. 5 rally in front of the federal courthouse to demand that the trials take place elsewhere, according to the Daily News. "This is perhaps the most dangerous decision any President and any attorney general have ever made," said Rep. Pete King (R-Nassau), who publicized the event alongside a new group called 9/11 Families for a Safe and Strong America.

But many New Yorkers —including about 79 percent of Gothamist readers — think the accused 9/11 plotters should be tried in Manhattan. "They're common thugs and that's all they deserve to be treated as," said retired Army Gen. James Cullen, a former military lawyer. "We're involved in a war of ideas and values. Our values and idea are better. We need to be able to demonstrate that." No date has been set for the trials.

These animals should not be able to step foot in this city... and yes there are dangers of them having a trial in NY. There's a potential of any kind of attack/ act of terror in the city just to stir shit up. There are still terror cells and hundreds of terrorists living in the US... not saying it would be another 9/11, just smaller attacks.

  • lightsformunny

There is always a potential of any kind for another attack or act of terror in ANY FUCKING CITY.

Go live in your state of fear somewhere else....Wyoming perhaps?

    Douchebag.

  • jpeditor

Only a MORON wouldn't think having these trials here INCREASES the chance of ANOTHER ATTACK ON NYC, D_BAG!

Maybe thats what you want, along with giving them a forum to spew their jihadi garbage that leftists suck on like milk from a dead pig.

    Pet King is my bitch.

  • MrManhattan

    You could do better.

Bring the trial here! There's money to be made! T-shirts to sell, hotels to fill, world's press to feed...

  • NannyState

It's not dangerous to telegraph to our "enemies abroad" that we are so weak and incapable of securing a criminal trial in NYC that terrorists should come back and try their luck? Peter King = Republican panty-wetting pussy.

  • jjazznola

"This is perhaps the most dangerous decision any President and any attorney general have ever made," Pete King, you are an idiot and you know nothing about history. More dangerous than sending thousands to die in a war we should have never gotten into? longacre, you are right there with him. Fear mongering does not work. The repubs (and FOX News)need to take it out of their playbooks.

There is nothing to be scared about trying criminals in our federal courts.

That is why we should be worried about President Obama's decision to continue the Bush policy of developing a tripartite justice system wherein those certain to be convicted are tried in federal court, those whose evidentiary findings don't quite satisfy the Federal Rules of Evidence are tried in military tribunals, and those who just aren't lucky at all will be "indefinitely detained."

Change a neoconservative can believe in.

i can't believe that bimbo was our press secretary.

  • potsmoker

these people are idiots. by what logic do they claim that a terror trial in a military tribunal or okie skadookie ohio will mean that there will be no terror anywhere anytime anyplace??? using that fear allows terrorists to win by corrupting the hearts and minds of a civilian population, and thats the textbook definition of terrorism.

  • jt10000

What a moron Peter King is.

If someone wants to say "I don't want to think about 9/11 so don't want it in the local news" I can sort of understand that.

But this "most dangerous" stuff is just stupid. "This is perhaps the most dangerous decision any President and any attorney general have ever made"

He really thinks that? What a moron.

  • thefacts

I am soo...sick and tired of the "Victim's Families:, few of whom live in Manhattan, and many actually out of the city entirely, dictating what goes on here.

It is primarily their fault that the Hole still exists eight years later, due to their years of whinging and complaining.

  • longacre

The pro-Obama, pro-trial contingent is a paradox: the timing of the trial and appeals will extend right into the 2012 election cycle, and if it's anything less than a resounding success, it will all but guarantee Obama losing reelection.

  • imadick

ok, you may have a point, but what's your objection to the trial? just that it's happening during obama's term? or that it's happening at all?

  • longacre

My objection is with the trial itself. There should not be one. We've killed thousands of Khalid's homeboys in Afghanistan and Pakistan without trials, why does he get a trial? Conversely, there aren't Predator drones flying sorties over Staten Island to bomb the homes of mafia bosses.

Perpetrators of acts of war are tried in military tribunals. If Obama does not believe 9/11 was an act of war, which allowing KSM a civilian trial would certainly indicate he does not, then he should have ordered the evacuation of all our troops from Afghanistan the day the KSM trial announcement was made.
