South Carolina Offers "Black Friday" Tax Break On Guns

Gun Incidents Leave 1 Dead, 1 Arrested, 2 Kids Injured From the Daily News's Michael Daly: The great state of South Carolina is putting its own sick twist on Black Friday with a tax holiday on firearm purchases. Not cars. Not clothes. Certainly not books. Just guns. For the 48 hours following Thanksgiving, gun buyers will enjoy a break of up to 9% in state and local taxes. Firearms traffickers are not expected to pass the savings on to New York criminals, but what is called 'the extrava-gun-za' and 'Second Amendment Weekend' is sure to help South Carolina stay among the top five states that provide 85% of the illegal handguns recovered in New York City." Keep it classy, South Carolina!

Especially the part south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Such a typical New York comment. Have you ever been down there? There is more rampant racism and illegal bullshit that goes down here on a daily basis than anything that happens down there in a year. Keep it classy, Bronx!

First off, I'm not even an American. I merely reside in the Bronx (legally, so save it). Second, I have traveled to 43 states, many of them south of the Mason-Dixon line. Finally, I agree with you that racism and other stupidity is pretty rampant here. Frankly, the whole country is screwed up.

"Frankly, the whole country is screwed up."

But not as bad as where you came from, eh? Did they shoot people for criticizing the govt there, or just put them in jail?

^ Weak. If you have nothing of relevance (i.e. based on any truth) to add, it's best to rest your little typing fingers, simp.

Yeah, god forbid that American citizens use everything at their disposal to protect themselves. The scary part of this report is its ridiculous slant towards believing that guns are actually the problem. Sounds to me like New Yorkers doing things illegally are actually the problem.

Shh, the hipsters on this blog will be upset that you used logic in your argument.

you know what else is scary? people obsessed with gun rights, abortion rights, gay marriage, healthcare reform, wars in iraq and afghanistan, etc...all the while china further enriches itself and becomes more influential throughout the world at our expense.

the cookie is crumbling and we're battling each other for the crumbs.

But... why would HBDC and other gun nuts care about China? They don't allow private gun ownership over there! (Yet for whatever odd reason have almost no gun crime.)

I'm not a gun nut, nor do I own one. I am a patriot and understand exactly what the founders of this country were doing when they demanded a Bill of Rights for its citizens. Because of that, I know that the more a government demands that its citizens behave a certain way, the more those citizens must protect themselves from their government. You would think that someone with your username would understand that.

Very good point, Sectarianism in America is really going to be our down fall!

Yes, it is the criminals that are committing the criminal acts, but it is the guns that make them much more efficient at it. The Browning Hi-Power 9mm can kill 14 people in under fifteen seconds.

So if you want to make that legal maybe you could provide a list of what's also legal under the Second Amendment? How powerful will we let people get when they decide to control others through violence? Sarin gas? Fissionable material?

What's your vision here?

There is no solution. How many people one gun can kill in a short period of time is not a good argument for getting rid of guns either. What if an ordinary citizen was being assaulted by 14 gangmembers armed with lead pipes? The answer is not to make the tools illegal; the answer is to make the punishment of crimes made by those who choose to use those tools illegally much more severe. Capital punishment is one of the most effective tools for that and yet there are states, such as this one, that have chosen to remove that deterrent because of compassion for those that have no compassion.

You really aren't progressive at all in many issues. shame. Penalties are only reactions that don't discourage many criminals who falsely believe they are invincible. We need to be proactive and keep guns out. Capital Punishment failed big time in Texas, the murder capital. How can you understand compassion when you support cruelty and taking a life? how can society respect life when the govt sanctions murder itself.

Here's a solution that I would like to see:

1) Gun licenses should be regulated and traceable like driver's licenses. Want a license? First get a permit, log hours at the shooting range with a licensed instructor. Pass written/visual/physical safety tests. Congratulations, you did great!

Oh, but you wanted an M16 with a bayonet and flame thrower with grenade launcher? Get in line for your heavy artillery permit. Sorry, kiddies, some people just aren't meant to drive tractor trailers and some people aren't meant to have automatic machine guns and flame throwers and shit.

License need to be renewed more frequently if you do not periodically log hours at the shooting range (the more practice, the longer the license periods).

2) Gun ownership should be regulated and registered like car ownership. Want to buy a gun? Sure, where's your license? Good, now that that's in order, you need to register your serial number and get tags for the weapon. Oh and this state requires you to be insured. Can't afford insurance? You can't own a car without insurance, why do you think you can own a gun without one?

3) Criminal history check. Whoa-oh, you've been convicted of a violent crime? Sorry, you're not mentally fit to own a weapon. Perhaps a few years down the line once you've become a productive and peaceful member of society we'll reevaluate. Until then, no license for you!

Yes, capital punishment is clearly the answer. That's why the United States (the only developed country on the planet that still employs capital punishment) enjoys such a low murder rate relative to the other wealthy nations of the world.

Say what you will, foreigner, but there's a reason people such as yourself continue to leave those developed countries and come here... to seek out a better life.

I am here temporarily, to do a job. Trust me, my quality of life is far lower here than it was in my home country. I am counting the days.

By the way, I like how you totally skirted the issue there (capital punishment), opting instead to call me out as a "foreigner" (like it's some sort of insult). Also, just curious if you'd be willing to tell me how many states you've lived in/visited. This all started with you implying my ignorance of the south after all.

For one, I've been all over the place. Everywhere is the same, only different looking people inhabiting it.

Also, I wasn't skirting your 'capital punishment' argument, I was just ignoring it. Your supposed facts were culled from statistics that you found to support your argument while ignoring my side. I'm too lazy to find statistics to support mine. I just know that fear is a powerful tool that, used correctly, can deter people from doing stupid stuff.

And I didn't use the word 'foreigner' as an insult, only as a point of fact.

"I'm too lazy to find statistics to support mine."

A lazy American? Now I've heard it all!

"The Browning Hi-Power 9mm can kill 14 people in under fifteen seconds."

Yeah, if you lined them up kneeling in a line and ran behind them all and shot them in the head, like they do in China, WHERE THERE IS NO RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF.

You have NO knowledge of firearms, and zero knowledge of the right to bear arms and defend oneself.

I am sure that you would agree that only the police and the military should be armed, right?

"Germans who wish to use firearms should join
the SS or the SA — ordinary citizens don't need guns,
as their having guns doesn't serve the State."

yeah man, in south carolina, you're surrounded by crazy rednecks who love palin and brandish shotguns. if they don't like the cut of your jib, they're liable to just blow your head off.

it's a scary world down there guys. if you do go, please be careful. it's dangerous.

South Carolina is a really nice state.

Can't fight the Second Amendment.

Cars, drugs, alcohol, pools, all kill more people than guns do. The only stigma against guns is their purpose, whereas cars, pools, etc... are not made to kill you, so no one really gets bent out of shape.

The gun crimes are committed by the government. They execute people for what are considered here as non-capital crimes. Let's not forget they are a totalitarian government and let's not look to them for guidance in these matters.

Yes, and I am sure totalitarian govts can be fought against by singing kumbaya...

We're talking about China here.

No we are talking about S Carolina. The china analogy started when some idiot said china banning guns is ok because they have no gun crime... he is obviously willing to trade "security" for his freedoms.

Gun control was introduced in [China in] 1966, after children aiming a Spanish rifle at sparrows near Tiananmen Square shot out a window in the Great Hall of the People, according to an official history of the Ministry of Public Security. Authorities grew more vigilant after the violently suppressed pro-democracy demonstrations of 1989, and after rapid economic growth began to spur social tensions."

I mentioned china in trying to explain to another hoplophobe who cried that a browning 9m could kill millions of people just by having its name typed three times on the internet.

Where you came in, I am not so sure.

All I know is that once you start talking about taking away the 2nd amendment, you have NO way to prevent them taking away the 1rst.

"All I know is that once you start talking about taking away the 2nd amendment, you have NO way to prevent them taking away the 1st."

Exactly! Thank you.

It will be nice to move back to the UK.

Where only the Yardies have guns. Comforting.

Just in time to make sure your most annoying relative doesn't come to Christmas dinner this year...
