Murder For A Seat On The D Train

2009_11_dtrainmurder.jpg

A knife-wielding commuter stabbed a passenger to death on the D train early this morning in a fight over a seat. Cops arrested a 37-year-old man suspected of repeatedly stabbing a 36-year-old man in the neck and face when the victim refused to move his bag from a seat on the northbound train at the 7th Avenue and 53rd Street station in Manhattan.

When the conductor became aware of the altercation at around 2 am, he didn't open train doors until police arrived. "The doors on the train were locked and the perp couldn't get away," a source told the Daily News. "That's how we got him." The victim was pronounced dead inside the train, "where pools of blood were left along the length of the first car," according to the tabloid. The names of the suspect and the victim have not yet been released, and it's unclear if they knew each other, according WCBS. The Post reports that "the killer was standing over his bloodied victim when the doors opened."

Wow, that is some messed up situation. If he didn't feel so entitled or badass, he'd be alive.

I find it really hard to believe that there were no other seats available on the D train at 2am. I don't think this "entitled" man was refusing to let this guy have a seat.

Maybe you missed this line from both the post and the article: "the victim refused to move his bag from a seat on the northbound train."

Or you can "believe" whatever you want to believe.

I agree with Abbott. There were probably plenty of seats so the fact that this man asked him to move his bag when there were other places to sit was the first clue that something was wrong. I think the man said no because he didn't want what he suspected was a crazy person to sit next to him. The better move though, is to pick up your bag and move away, but that doesn't always work either.

not on Friday night at 2am. Sometimes that line is crowded from all the people returning to the Bronx from Time Square.

I wonder how crowded the train was at that time.

I was wondering the same thing! Can you imagine being a bystander in that Car??

It can't possibly have been crowded. For one thing, it would've been pandemonium in there if it had been crowded, wouldn't it? And hopefully, someone would've stopped they guy at some point, surely a whole crowded subway car wouldn't have let the stabbing continue without doing something? I mean, the guy would've been over the victim, and totally able to be restrained from behind by a crowd.

Okay, I take it back. THere were "some two dozen riders" on the train, according to the post. Sad state of humanity when 24 people can't overcome one man with a knife.

You remember Kitty Genovese right? Perhaps the same concept...Although now that it turns out it was more of a fight between the two guys I could see no one getting involved or expecting the short deadly burst of stabbing.

His name is Dwight Johnson. His name is Dwight Johnson. His name is Dwight Johnson.

What was the car number on the D train? I sure would want to avoid it.

it's not worth it. pick up your bag, get up, and move to another car. or say no to the knife weilding man.

some bulls locking horns! How smart of them.

Whoa. This is really messed up. Surely the murderer was high on something. What other reason could the guy have for stabbing a complete stranger for not giving up a stupid seat.

The Posts says there were about a dozen other riders/witnesses. It'd be interesting to know if the guy seemed agitated when he asked the other man to remove his bag or if it was sudden outburst. Either way, a terrible thing. Thoughts go out to the victim's family.

High, or mentally ill like that guy in Canada that decapitated a fellow bus passenger.

and he ate bits of head. Human, the other white meat.

Not a big fan of the car locking. Over the summer I was on the 6 when a fight broke out. The conductor locked the car and because the aggressor couldn't get out he went nuts and started punching random people. We were locked in for close to ten minutes with this maniac until the police showed up. I shudder to think what could have happened that night if the man had a knife.

I was about to ask something that you partially answered. WHY the heck would the MTA lock innocent bystanders in a car with an enraged knife wielding suspect? This sounds not right. What would my reaction be if i was in this car?

I don't think it was crowded -- if there was a crowd, they'd have been totally panicked, and someone would've done something if only out of fear for his or her own life, no?

this 'public trap' kind of solution is a very very dangerous situation for random bystanders.
What can you do? play dead? really sucks for those locked with the crazyfuck.

Over a seat? Wow, what's the world come to.

it over the lack of civility which commuters deal with on a daily basis. He snapped

The trains are crowded on weekend nights because cabs are too expensive. Plus, last night was a nice night, warm, and a lot of people were out.

I took the F home at 330AM and it was rather crowded.

According to the Post article, there were "some two dozen riders" in the car. So not really crowded, and there would have been other seats. He apparently wanted that particular seat, or perhaps just used the fact that there were bags on it because he wanted to pick a fight.

The Post reports that "the killer was standing over his bloodied victim when the doors opened."

The Daily News reports that the killer was sitting in a seat pretending to be "just another passenger."

That one wasn't supposed to be a reply. But of course the "replying" box was still checked because I hadn't taken the extra step of reloading the page.

Don't you just love MovableType? And now that Gothamist has been using it for years, they're locked in, unless they can find better software with some kind of database migration assistant.

According to the police, criminal activity is way down in the city... riiiight.

great story. looks like someone learned the hard way a good lesson about civility.

yeah, he learned? he's dead, how could he learn something when he's dead? maybe the killer will learn something about going batshit crazy, in jail, when he's someone's bitch.

hipsters and yuppys { sigh } this year is starting to remind me of the 80-90 i think nyc is coming back =0) a couple more of these senerios and the yuppys/hipsters might actually go back to there fashionable lifestyles in south dakota and ohio

Valid point.

It worked in Miami 15 years ago when a few Euro tourists were murdered. Chased them all away for years.

And look at how great Miami is now!

Shut the fuck up. Not everything is about "yuppies and hipsters", infact hardly anything is. Do you often see lots of "hipsters" and "yuppies" on the D train?

Let's all hope you enjoy "Old New York" when you get stabbed on the train for not moving your bag. Hopefully it'll be on an elevated line and during your last moments of life you can take out your cell phone and post a comment on gothamist about how great it is that violent crime in NYC is increasing.

"Maybe this will stop the condo boom!"

Seriously shut the fuck up.

WTF are you talking about? I can't even fathom what is going on in the rotted marshmallow you call a brain. What does a stabbing by some homeless people have to do with hipsters and yuppies? "NYC is coming back :0)?" Seriously? I sure miss those murderin' days! Are you trying to sound "hip" or "with it?" Perhaps you are over the age of 80, and think this will ingratiate yourself to the youngins. "You're" tenuous grasp of the English language points to the other direction, the one where you're more like 13 and sneaking on to the website. But I can't. I can't. "Your" just too fucking dumb. There are some morons on the internet, but I crown you King Moron of the 21st century. Congrats!

Wait, I just read the daily news article. It says right in it:

The 36-year-old Johnson, believed to be homeless, refused and punched Sanchez in the face. Sanchez pulled out a steak knife and stabbed him several times in the neck and face, cops said.

Why is this not mentioned in the original article on Gothamist or in any of the comments? That changes the story drastically, this guy didn't just randomly stab someone to death for not giving him a seat, he was punched and attacked by the guy.

Shoddy reporting Gothamist...

had a feeling it might have been a homeless guy with all the bags and on the train late at night.
but why would you want to sit near a guy with a bunch of overstuffed shopping bags?
so either way, looks like Old NY is back. Record Homeless people.

For the record, if someone is harassing me about my bag when their is a ton of seats, they deserve to be punched. That doesn't mean he deserved to be stabbed in the throat and killed though.

That guy was looking to start trouble. The train was not that packed.

Also for the record. Homeless isn't always what it seems. He is a person with a family and friends. Just because he had the appearance of being homeless doesn't mean people have the right to do whatever they want, including stabbing him or pushing him around.

Oh and he has a name, its DWIGHT JOHNSON. May he rest in peace.
