UPDATE: Knicks NOT Looking For The Answer In Iverson

2009_11_answer.jpg When we previously noted on the Knicks burgeoning interest in signing free agent guard Allen Iverson, it seemed as though it was a long shot to happen. But new reports have come out in the last two days that are making us question everything.

According to a particularly giddy Post report, it seems the Knicks are on the verge of signing Iverson to a one-year deal, possibly in time to join them on a three-game west coast trip next week. "Knicks president Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni were planning on interviewing Iverson first as final confirmation of their desire to make this massive move that changes the entire face of this season’s club." According to the Post, coach D'Antoni endorsed signing Iverson to the hesitant Walsh, for fear that a terrible season might make LeBron James and other free agents wary of signing with the team next year.

The Daily News is reporting that MSG chairman James Dolan is now the one holding up the process, and has "reservations" about signing the frequently controversial guard. Interestingly, GM Walsh is "doing background checks. He spoke to former Knicks coach Larry Brown, who has a long, tumultuous history with Iverson. Brown told the Daily News yesterday that Iverson asked him to call Walsh on his behalf this past summer. 'Donnie's always liked Allen,' Brown said on the phone yesterday. 'And I know Allen wanted to play there.'"

However, all that said, an anonymous source within the Knicks told ESPN this morning that, "We are definitely not pursuing him anymore." That clears things up! Today at noon, Knicks GM Walsh is supposed to address the press, and will hopefully give us a more clear indication of which way they're leaning.

UPDATE: With a little egg on their back-page face, the Post is reporting that the Knicks will officially announce that they are not pursuing Iverson this afternoon.

The league has to take another look at the salary cap -- ten years is too long for a horror show like this to play in NYC

I don't know. I think they'll beat the Nets this weekend. As someone who's been following them for a while, they look A LOT better with Curry down low. If he can keep himself healthy and play smart by drawing double-teams and working the post, I think the team will play with a new focus. I don't know. I don't feel as though I'm convincing myself, here. But I do like the addition of Curry back into the rotation.

They have to do something to try to win some games this year, seems like it is starting to dawn on them that NO ONE is coming next year if they look this bad. End of story. They NEED a point guard. Duhon is awful. Douglas is promising, but young. They have NO 1st round pick this year (thanks Isiah!)

Look for the Nets to notch their first win on saturday

Trust Dolan to make the wrong decision every time. Well, at least I can keep up my Knick game embargo...

I don't know - it will only be for one season, right? Add some interest, get fans in the seats but nothing to derail their future plans.

  • theevilone

I totally agree. Hence their decision to pass on him was a totally bone-headed one. Yes, the Knicks have a lot of young players. Unfortunately, they aren't very good ones!

  • nivek

I mean who would he be hindering? Chris Duhon? Nate Robinson? They both suck as point and shooting guards...

Knicks have soooo many young players that need support and instruction from those as experienced as Iverson... problem is that I doubt Iverson would help them; he tends to hog that ball and avoids passing. I want him here anyway cause at least he will attract a few fans and maybe, who knows, he might fit in well alongside LeBron =]

  • I hope he's signed after this weekend, just to see how the Nets do against the Knicks this weekend.

If the Nets win, I'm canceling my cable.

We saw this game a million times over (literally) with Starbury -- a poor man's AI if there ever could be one and, who incidentally, "played" for both the Knicks and Nets.
