Tis The Season To Save Turkeys

It's a Thanksgiving miracle! A wild turkey hailing from Staten Island found her way to the New Jersey Turnpike, where for days she's been dodging vehicles and worrying toll booth attendants.

Yesterday Tammy the Turkey, as she was named by toll collectors, was finally rescued by the NJ Fish and Wildlife officials and brought to a South Jersey zoo, where according to the NY Post, "she will live out her days with a male turkey named Gobbler."

A NJ Turnpike spokesman said, “This bird just loved to sit there and hangout. She didn’t want to leave. She was fast on her feet.” NJ.com has some footage of Tammy the Turkey:

Meanwhile, over in Greenpoint, a reader tells us, "I saw this crazy bird (who certainly looks like a Turkey) on the sidewalk outside of my apartment in Greenpoint yesterday morning. He darted into 4 lanes of traffic on Vandervoort Ave. where cars stopped for him and managed to safely get to the other side." There's some skakey-cam footage after the jump.

Since 1986, they've rescued more than 1,000 turkeys and placed hundreds into homes through their annual Turkey Express adoption event.
