Reports: Giuliani Won't Run For Governor—Will Run For Senate

2009_09_rudygiuliani.jpg After months (years?) of speculation, former mayor Rudy Giuliani is not going to run for governor—but will set his sights on the Senate seat now occupied by Kirsten Gillibrand, according to various media outlets that spoke to anonymous sources.

The NY Times reports, "His decision is a blow to many Republican leaders, who had viewed Mr. Giuliani as the strongest potential candidate in a year in which voter anger and anti-Albany sentiment appeared to be swelling." And the Daily News says, "'In the next 48 hours he will announce that he will not run for governor, but will run for the Senate,' said a source familiar with the thing of the former mayor and failed presidential candidate." Oh, Rick Lazio must be so happy!

However, the Post reports, "His longtime adviser recently publicly nixed the idea of Giuliani running for U.S. Senate, which GOP state chairman Ed Cox has suggested. But some Giuliani advisers, and many GOP political watchers, think it's a possibility to consider, especially if he wants to go after the presidency again in 2012." So, basically, Giuliani may or may not run for office next year.

he'd probably do less damage as a senator than as governor. i'm fine with this.

  • Sinchy

I'm voting for Johnathan Tasini for Senate, if he can get the Democratic Nomination.

He really understands the economic situation and how we got here, and will work hard for the working people and productive industries of this country and not the rapacious wealth accumulations of the finance sector and it's legion of money hoarding fat cats.

That said I will donate heavily to anyone running against Ghouliani, one of the most despicable political opportunists and fear-mongering fascists around.

he's gonna take that seat away from kristen easily

I'm wondering if his children will still publicly state they won't vote for him.

When he was undergoing cancer and divorce, he stayed with Mr. Koppel and his boyfriend. When Mr Koppel married his boyfriend, Giuliani didn't come to the wedding because it would look bad to Republicans. Some Republicans publicly wonder if a man who dumped his wife on TV, is hated by his kids, walked around with his ugly mistress in broad daylight, almost got a corrupt cop to head Homeland Security in wartime and tossed aside his gay friends should deserve their votes.

  • hunter.blatherer

That all makes him a model Republican on the national stage, these days.

  • handsomedevil

Yeah, but even with all that the majority of upstate voters will vote for him. Because what's worse than being a selfish, hypocritical dirtbag? "Socialism."

  • nicemarmot

Yeah, his kids hate him so much they dropped his name. Do you know what a pain it is to change your name, even if you don't do it officially? You've got to seriously hate your father to drop his name. Not that I can blame them. I'd probably hate him even more than I do if I was genetically related to him.

  • Yep, look how well that worked last time...
