Rupert Murdoch: NY In Trouble Because Paterson Is Blind

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch blamed some of New York's troubles on Gov. David Paterson's blindness, which the Australian billionaire claims makes it hard for Paterson to "really know what's going on."

While listing some of the problems facing the state at a Wall Street Journal CEO conference on Monday, Murdoch — who owns the New York Post, the Wall Street Journal and Fox News among other media outlets — said: "The Senate, the State Assembly, totally incompetent, with a governor, who's a very nice and honest man, who can't, who's blind, who can't read Braille and doesn't really know what's going on."

Ironically, Murdoch made the statement in response to a prompt about the lack of civility in political discourse, according to NY1. Paterson's office refused to comment on the statements, which came to light amidst the Governor's recent attack against local media for sensationalizing his disagreement with President Obama about trying suspected terrorists in New York City.

    He cannot read braille.

    He has other people read to him. (meaning he can't choose what he reads)

    This story came out a couple of months ago, I remember seeing it on NY1 & Murdoch has a very valid point.

    Murdoch, may very well be right but the man carries so much political baggage he can't ask that question.

    But it truly is a question that must be asked. Can a man who cannot read because of his visual impairment truly be effective as governor of any large state?

    A visually impaired person who can read Braille and makes use of devices for the visually impaired can be expected to.

    Paterson, has kept up so far. Given the stalemate in Albany his staff can keep him informed by reading to him. Can they keep him apprised in highly dynamic situation? What happens in a situation where the critical information is map based or photographic?

    I apologize to the visually impaired community my comments about the governor apply to one person and one person only.

    "Can a man who cannot read because of his visual impairment truly be effective as governor of any large state?"

    If a mentally challenged actor can be governor of California (the second time that's happened), then Patterson shouldn't have a problem with being a blind one.

    Paterson could read the bumps on old Rupert's face (but not his wife's chest).

  • mdow

    wow. good work.

  • ANGRYGOD11

    Murdoch might truly believe it, but he didn't bother to prove it with any examples where Patterson's legal blindness undercut his job performance.

    BTW, a lot of other states are going through the same combination of budget crisis and political paralysis (I'm looking at you, California). What's their excuse?

    his wife must be blind to sleep with him.

    when last given an eye exam she read everything as

    $ $ $ $ $

    $ $ $ $ $ $

    $ $ $ $ $

    Tough words coming from a horse that obviously wears a blinder on his left eye.

  • merlinthefiend

    He's kind of right — but man what a doosh.

    Even Murdoch has the yellow fever!

  • longacre

    You guys are PC whiners. Rupert is right. From a strictly practical standpoint, being blind is a huge impediment to getting anything done in any line of work, nevermind a high intensity nonstop job like running the second biggest state in the Union. It's hard enough to get anything done in Albany if you have perfect vision...imagine having to have people read you every single document, newspaper article, letter, etc.

  • rebelbelle

    Second biggest state in the union how?

    Not by territory, population or size of legislative delegations. Just curious.

  • ANGRYGOD11

    Texas IS the second largest state:

    Yes, by population (and still growing).

    Yes, by congressional representatives (and still growing).

    Yes, by area.

    You're welcome.

  • longacre

    In terms of state product and state budget.

  • longacre

    I stand corrected, Texas is #2 in those depts. as well.

  • mcfaite

    If he's running Texas, there might be our problem, right there...

    In Ancient Greece, blind people were revered because they did not have sight as something that impaired their judgement. You should really think before you speak/write. It would greatly improve your (in)sight.

  • longacre

    While I respect the democratic and philosophical contributions of the ancient Greeks, if they were right all the time, Greece would not be the borderline third world nation that it is today.
