Police have arrested five young men allegedly involved in the altercation that led to the shooting of innocent bystander Vada Vasquez, a 15-year-old Bronx girl who was chatting with a friend after school Monday afternoon when a stray bullet struck her in the head, shattering inside her skull. She is currently in critical condition and on a ventilator. The bullets were directed at Tyrone Creighton, 19, who was hit in the back as he fled five men who had confronted him outside a bodega near Bronx Latin School. Police believe revenge was the motive.
Creighton was targeted because his two brothers, both prisoners on Rikers Island, were involved in an assault on another prisoner at Rikers Island, according to police. That inmate had instructed his associates on the outside to seek revenge against Creighton. Last night and early this morning, cops rounded up five suspects between the ages of 16 and 23; according to City Room, they're all charged with attempted murder, criminal use of a firearm and armed assault. The youngest suspect, Carvette Gentile, 16, is believed to be the shooter. Creighton is in stable condition.
Last night hundreds of people gathered for a vigil at the scene of the shooting, carrying white candles and holding signs with messages such as "Stop Gun Violence" and "It Takes the Hood to Save the Hood." Bronx borough president Rubén Díaz Jr. told reporters, "We are out here because we’re frustrated. We’re tired of it. We’re fed up." And Mayor Bloomberg (who was not at the vigil) remarked yesterday, "Carrying an illegal gun is one of the dumbest and most dangerous things you can do and it's why an innocent young girl in the Bronx is now hanging on for dear life."
Doctors have told Vada's family that if she recovers, she will likely suffer from speech and memory problems. Her sister Allison Boodram tells the Daily News, "I've been crying so much tears, you didn't even know you had that many tears. She's still the same. No changes yet. She's fighting... Out of all the people there, why her? It always happens to the good kids, the ones who don't deserve it."

How's that "No Snitching" stuff working out for ya?
Gun control across all fifty states, even the ones where toothless bumpkins spew about the "gummint". Every gun that is purchased should be attached to a person who is registered to own it and no right to sell it without proper paperwork. You can't sell a car without the papers, why should you be able to sell a gun?
Right on!!!
I have been in the process of getting a purchase permit. I have been fingerprinted, have had letters sent to work, friends, family, and had an psychiatric evaluation. If this was the NORM across the board we would have more responsible gun owners and less of the crazies.
Carvette Gentile. Now that's a name I expect to see in the news quite often in the future.
What happened, did her mother look out the window when he hatched and a red Corvette went by?
The back half was a Corvette, the front was a Chevy Cavalier.
Or perhaps the drop zone was across the street from a Carvel store as the 'vette passed.
Let's see some investigative reporting and updates John.
On another note I hope for a speedy recovery for the poor girl.
raise your kids properly: problem solved.
I'm sure these fine young men were like, "Dude, guns are illegal because that old, white mayor says they're bad. You could go to (gasp!) jail for having that."
Just punishment for these fine young men: probation, community service
Here's a smart tip for youngsters: If someone IN JAIL asks you to do something stupid or illegal for them while they are IN JAIL, this usually means that you'll probably end up IN JAIL with them.
Common sense, git some.
But their low-riding pants say they are badass!
and invincible!
again, it's the parent's fault. had they instilled any sense of morals into these hoodlums, this would have never have happeded. it's the same story over and over and over - whether it be over chicken wings or this - it's the parent's fault. period. whether or not these kids have "community based constructive activities" to keep them occupied and off the streets - if they had any sense of right or wrong as part of their moral fiber this would not happen. period.
Why blame the parents when it's so much easier to blame society?
/s
Morals went out with the window 40 some odd years ago. Baby boomers decided they were unhip and stood in the way of their hedonistic impulses.
And Gen X, Gen Y and Gen Z picked up that vibe and ran with it, right through the end zone like some kind of Forrest Gump. Case in point, these five guys, who obviously aren't baby boomers.
Birth control!
Old Ms. Creighton (couldn't ask for a more appropriate name) must have done a fine job raising her sons seeing two are on Rikers together. At least they will be sharing a nice Thanksgiving together. Enjoy your bologna sandwiches guys.
It's easy to place blame. You've got: cheap & illegal guns, a lack of strong parental guidance, crime, and poverty.
How do you fix this though? That's the toughest question.
And to kneecap people before they get started: Come up with an intelligent, workable solution. Not one of those "Let's round up them (insert racial epithet) and ship them to the moon."
well, got any suggestions?
Get rid of the welfare programs that have replaced fathers in the 'hood. Get rid of welfare in general (its hard to committ random violence while you're working). I can't think of any programs that have failed worse than public housing and welfare.
NRA cazies and Right wingers hate abortion but love guns. If these five assholes weren't an argument for abortion I don't know what is. Furthermore, it's time for the conservatives to wake up and realize that every one of those guns on the streets maiming people like Vada were disrtibuted to individuals like gangs thanks to their "pry it from my cold dead hands" gun show bread and circus.
WE WILL NOT SEE THE FOLLOWING::
Al Sharpton and his racist cronies marching through the streets condemning this non-stop violence—calling for and end.
It's starts with community and family, most of which these neighborhoods do not care for—this will NEVER end if there's no push towards "loving thy neighbor"—a community, a family... No one has an answer and the fact that it keeps happening, makes me believe no one really gives a hoot.

TOO FUNNY!!! Were they asian?
I wouldn't want to seem cruel or anything, but the sight of those five animals slowly hanging to death by piano wire from streetlamps might bring a little joy to the holiday season.
Not a bad idea. I would add all 3 Creighton brothers to the festivities. Two are already locked up & a third one will end up there anyway. String him up pro-actively.
And because these youths undoubtedly committed the crime using guns registered in the state of NY and in their own names, Bloomberg will respond by making it even TOUGHER for others to do the same. Dumbshit.
Oh, boy, the tired old debate is on: Is it the fault of the "NRA crazies" or is it the "animals" who sould be strung up with piano wire. How about neither? I, together with about 4 million others, am a member of the NRA. I, like 90 million other Americans, own guns. Are we all crazies? No. What is the solution, someone asked? I'll tell you:
1. Allow no one to buy a gun without a criminal and mental background check. No "loopholes", but also no "gun registry" and no arbitrarily long waiting periods. A background check can be done in 15 minutes, a few hours max. (Yes, I know, I disagree with the NRA on this).
2. Impose very harsh penalties on anyone who sells a gun to anyone with a criminal background, including in a private sale.
3. Impose mandatory life sentence on anyone using or possessing a firearm while committing a felony. Why do so many of these thugs get little or no jail time for illegal gun possession? Riddle me that Mayor Bloomberg.
3. Pass a national right to carry law, that allows law abiding, properly trained citizens to carry a concealed weapon in any state. States that allow concealed carry have seen violent crime rates fall, not rise.
4. This is the hardest step: fix the "gangsta" culture that prevails in the inner city. Don't have an easy answer here, but I always wonder where Reverend Al, Jesse Jackson and all the others are when a tragedy like this happens. Where's all the outrage? Where are the marches? I guess they only come out when a bystander is accidentally killed by a cop trying to defend himself.
ya'll shouldnt be talkin bout other pplz names like that urs probably like porscha or sum shit so shut up....i personally kno that boy and yea he not tha best kid overall but he still a good kid anyways god knows he aiin mean to shoot that girl and idk bout tha other dude but dat boy is like a brother to me so ya'll needa hush
