Daily Show Goes After Giuliani's Terrorist Trial Flipflopping

While former mayor Rudy Giuliani continued to blast plans to host the trials of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other suspected terrorists in New York City, the Daily Show went after some seemingly hypocritical comments the likely gubernatorial candidate made just three years ago.

Giuliani has come out strongly against the Obama administration's plans to try the suspects in federal court instead of in military tribunals because he feels it provides "benefits to the terrorists and much less benefits to the public." He again scorned the idea at a Republican gathering in Staten Island yesterday, according to the Advance.

But the Daily Show pulls together some contradictory quotes the former mayor made three years ago when he spoke out in favor of trying "20th hijacker" Zacarias Moussaoui in federal court, stating: "I think there is value in demonstrating to people what America is like — that we can have these kind of emotional disagreements, but that there is a law and we will follow it."

Why does it always take Mr Stewart on Comedy Central to nail these hypocrites? and yes, i've already written to CNN, MSNBC, and the 3 'majors' to ask this very question. i had to suffer through Giuliani's diatribe on Sunday's shows, and no one bothered to pull this quote from 3 years ago, unless i was in the bathroom barfing at the time from the rest of what he said.

Well, here's a theory - the Sunday talk shows and news interviewers are beholden to their guests, and cannot afford to "rough them up" too much or they will never come back. Also, it's a lot easier to wait, see what they say, and then start doing research in your massive video clip database. For the talk show to do it in real time they have to anticipate the exact spin of their guest and be prepared with rebuttals.

The alternative to The Daily Show is probably something like Keith Olberman or Beck and O'Reilly. Sounds a lot less palatable, doesn't it.

For me personally, print is king. TV sucks.

felix, I will have to respectfully disagree. mainly cause it's my personal belief and also cause I'm a children's librarian. kids and adults both like the print form and it will never go out of style.
now whether what's printed is meant to be believed or not, well that's a different story.

Yeah, the purpose of journalism is to just serve as a mouthpiece for public figures:

Jon Stewart and his staff are fricken amazing. I just wish it didn't have to wait for his next episode for all of the hypocrisy to be revealed.

Gulliani is an asshole. No, sorry no specifics. No rants. No political facts that I've read for a long time. just an asshole. Period.

It is amazing how much footage they must sift through to get the clips for their montages, but that doesn't mean it's funny. Variations of the same jokes about the same targets every single night: Fox News, Palin, Giuliani, Fox News, Limbaugh, Fox News...it was funny for awhile, but it's wearing thin, IMO.

well, you're not an "idiot". But, your comparison is pretty damn off. Way off. Extremely..off. no better than Giulliani? bold statement and didn't back it. I'm somewhat curious to how you got that idea.

But, I will say that if it's partially his (Jon's) job or the point of the show is to make fun of the news, then...he's doing it right. If these are the most important issues of the news effecting it's viewers, then it makes sense to him to be reporting on it. not to mention, the stuff he reports on, is not only hilarious but, unfortunately the truth, or decently well balanced.


That's because the right has cornered the market on laughably stupid hypocrisy, and they lie and make assholes of themselves so often, making fun of them while pointing out their perfidy is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Giuliani will say and do anything for a singular purpose: To feed his massive and bloated ego. It's all about him, 24/7.

Since you morons think Jon Leibowitz tells the truth...he had to be tried in the US..he was ARRESTED in Minnesota. There is no other option. These guys were arrested in Pakistan. There are other options. They are being used on the Cole Bomber. So why not with these guys? And if you dont think they are going to act as their own attorneys, then I own that bridge right by the courthouse there, and will sell it to you for $20.

I really don't get what the problem is with trying them in NY. If you're against trying them at all, that's one thing. I think that's a big mistake, but whatever. But most of the BS on the teletype about this is people talking about being afraid of physical repercussions in NYC for the trial. I also seem to note that most of the people peddling said BS don't seem to actually live and raise their kids in NYC. The time to strike would have been during the Yankees parade - the terrorists, even if caught afterwards, might have been acquitted by the right American jury.

Trying them in a military tribunal does me more harm than letting them go as a result of due process. Anyone who seriously thinks that, were the absolute worst to happen, these jokers won't be followed for life (and for years after that - to see who visits their grave) is a fool. I sincerely doubt a trial is happening without a good chance of their being found guilty, but even so - whatever. It really doesn't do anything for me to keep them locked up forever, knowing to do so means we're putting a huge asterisk on some fundamental constitutional rights. Short-term security in exchange for long-term damage to the rule of law is a sucker's game. (There's enough damage already being done to the rule of law by homegrown lobbyists.)

Not true. If you are apprehended by and held in custody of agents of the US government, you are afforded rights under the Geneva Convention and Constitutional rights under US law. Why do you think the CIA sets up secret interrogation facilities in collaboration with dictatorial regimes? Just for fun?

You have no Constituional Rights as a non US Citizen outside of any US territory. Some Pakistani national arrested in Pakistan has zero Constituional Rights. Its Con Law 101.

The Supreme Court has endorsed Madison's view at least since Wong Wing v. U.S. (1896) as to the criminal procedure provisions, and in Yick Wo v. Hopkins (1886) (also unanimously) as to the Equal Protection Clause racial equality principle. (link)

Republicans don't want them tried in New York because it wouldn't exactly be a fair trial and the terrorists would go to jail until they die. That means that Republican fear tactics wouldn't work anymore and that would rob them of the money they continuously seek through defense contracts and other industries that profit from fear.

And if we must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that KSM was complicit in mass murder, by what right do we send Predators and Special Forces to kill his al-Qaida comrades wherever we find them? For none of them has been granted a fair trial.

There's a difference between what goes on in action on a battle field and what happens after you take prisoners. Are you really this dumb? It's astonishing.
