Canstruction 2009 Winners Canfirmed!

Down at the Winter Garden in the World Financial Center, this year's Canstruction exhibit is underway, with 100,693 cans being used to make ingenious sculptures to benefit City Harvest. All these sculptures were assembled in a single night, and yesterday the winners were announced, with jurors declaring "Feed the Bank (Piggy Bank)," by Arianna Braun Architects, PLLC, best in show. The award for Best Use of Labels went to the Beatles-inspired "We Get By With A Little Help From Our Friends," by Ted Moudis Associates. Best Structural Ingenuity went to "A Fungus to Feed Us" by Platt Byard Dovell White Architects

Our personal favorite, CANny Island, a replica of the Coney Island amusement district, got snubbed! Oh well, the bottom line is that all the cans go to City Harvest, which rescues unused food for use in soup kitchens and food pantries. The organization says the number of people relying on food pantries to bridge the gap to their next paycheck has increased dramatically in the past few months by 15 -20%. Canstruction is on view from November 12th to November 23rd, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. (closing at 5 p.m. on the 23rd). Admission is free, but the public is encouraged to bring a can of food to donate.

I was going to do a giant phallus this year but they didn't have enough cans of pork and beans at Stew Leonards.
