Bronx Girl, 15, Shot In Head By Stray Bullet

2009_11_vvasquez.jpg A 15-year-old Bronx teen, not too far from her school in the Morrisania section, was shot in the head by a stray bullet yesterday afternoon. She had apparently walked into a dispute between two men—the Daily News reports, "As Vada Vasquez underwent emergency brain surgery, cops hunted for a bicycle-riding gunman who fired wildly at a man suspected of being a snitch." The apparent target of the gunfire, a 19-year-old man, was also shot in the abdomen and leg and taken to a hospital.

According to the Post, Vada, a student at Bronx Latin, was "chatting with a friend at around 3:45 p.m. on the corner of Home Street and Prospect Avenue," when the shooting began between two groups. (The News says the fight broke out near the Davidson Houses projects.) A witness said, "First, [Vada] was lying still. People started crowding around her, and after a few minutes, she jumped up. She tried to stand up, but I told her to stay calm and lie down. I asked her if she had a phone to call her parents." She added that when "Vada lurched forward," "Blood poured out of her head. Her friend was screaming. She was hysterical. She didn't know what happened to her."

Firefighters applied pressure to the back of her head to stop the bleeding; the News reports, "The bullet shattered inside the middle of Vada's brain, and there was no exit wound" and that she is in a medically-induced coma. Police sources also tell the News, "She had nothing to do with [the shooter]" and that she was "definitely an innocent." And resident told NY1, "This poor little girl. It could have been my son --he's 13. I just don't want to stay here."

Police are looking for the shooter, described as a black male between 16 and 22 years of age and wearing a black and blue hooded t-shirt and Yankees cap. Community activist Tony Herbert was outraged, "This madness is getting out of hand and if we don't come up with a plan now, we are on the verge of seeing young Black and Hispanic children become extinct." Last month, a Brooklyn teen was fatally shot outside his school.

poor girl but his remark ", we are on the verge of seeing young Black and Hispanic children become extinct" was fear mongering

damn, you got that right, not to mention that it's total bullshit. my hispanic neighbors have literally 13 brothers and sisters, so they're keeping that population going all on their own.

sad for this girl though. i hope she pulls through.

Not to sound in any way negative for the poor girl, but considering the bullet is in the middle of her brain -probably in fragments- would her surviving be anything good? I hope she just isn't in pain and her family gets thru this...
And they find the stupid punk and...

it's a good question but i'm no doctor, just a man with a heart. i have seen crazy images of people with spikes and nails in their heads who have survived, often accompanied by changes to their personalities and temperaments.

My aunt was in a horrific car accident (drunk driver in an SUV, go figure) and the entire back of her skull was smashed in and some of the fragments went into her brain tissue. She was in a coma for a year, had most of the back of her head reconstructed with metal plates and bone shavings from her ribs (or something)and yet, she survived. Sad thing is, even though she lives a perfectly normal life today, it's true that her personality is a little different. Before the accident she was the youngest female to ever graduate from the Wharton Bussiness School at Penn, was a high flyer in her career and really driven. Since the accident she has cultivated a kinda butch aesthetic and can no longer maintain her focus long enough to return to her career. But, she is alive and her warmth, great intellect and outrageous sense of humor is still there.

incredible...the human body is truly remarkable and resilient, as you said.

I get you, hotstepper. But... I just know I wouldn't want to survive something like this if it meant it altered who I was in the wrong way or made me dependent on others... or worse.

I am so fed up of hearing about innocent people like Vada being injured or killed by these urban parasites who populate the projects. However, you are right in calling Herbert out on this ridiculous comment, Felix. The vast majority of children I see in this city are black or Hispanic. They're not exactly in danger of extirpation any time soon.

Horrible situation and I hope the police nail whomever did this.

Sad. Hope she pulls through soon. The brain can be a surprisingly resiliant organ.

i hate hearing about the innocents who get harmed when these animals are fighting, if they only hurt each other, i would be glad, but there's always a "stray" bullet because these punks can't aim. put the gun down & fight like a man, with your fists or a knife.

Don't you read holyfrjole's posts? Specifically this one where he says:

Why is it always the good students? Or is it that they don't become good students until they've been shot? He was young, it was tragic, but the good student knows to get out of the way when two gang bangers pull out their guns (unless, of course, they're with them).

Obviously, the innocents would also know to get out of the way, unless they're "with them." holyfrjole is such a caring soul with his psychology graduate degree. Oh, wait, he also says he has a law degree, which would explain a lot.

They are rich enough for a gun but too poor to have a car? why don't these retards steal one?

".... She had apparently walked into a dispute between two men—the Daily News reports"

Men?

No, scumbags is more like it. These are not men.

Call the ACLU. It's the cops' fault. They forced the guns out of the schools with their facsist school security guards and look what happened.

the shooter, described as a black male between 16 and 22 years of age and wearing a black and blue hooded t-shirt and Yankees cap
Well, that'll help.
