After Oreo's Euthanization, Animal Group Defends ASPCA

Despite widespread backlash against the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for euthanizing Oreo the dog — a pit bull who miraculously survived being thrown off a six-story building only to be put down by the ASPCA because of her aggressive behavior — a major animal rights group has come forward to defend the agency.

While many have criticized the ASPCA for euthanizing Oreo, especially when a respected animal sanctuary had offered to care of her, the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals is pushing animal lovers to continue to back the ASPCA. “Calling on animal lovers and ASPCA supporters to stop donating to the ASPCA is short-sighted and not the way to honor Oreo’s memory,” said Jane Hoffman, president of the coalition of 160 animal rescue groups striving to make New York City a no-kill community for animals 2015. “This will, in fact, result in an enormous number of animal deaths — not a result that true animal lovers would desire."

Hoffman went on to note that the ASPCA — which has committed $5 million to her group — operates free spay and neuter clinics around the city daily, accepts the transfer of thousands of animals every year and aids in their adoptions, investigates more than 5,000 cases of animal cruelty in the city per year, goes after against dog-fighting rings and puppy mills, and issues grants to animal welfare groups — all of which she says are important measures that keep animals alive. “For the sake of the animals — in your sorrow and anger over a tragedy — do not throw the baby out with the bathwater. The ASPCA deserves and needs your support.”

Her group received 5 million from the ASPCA - Do you expect her to criticize them?

If they gave me 5 million I'd write them a similar letter of support.

Bottom line in my book - ASPCA chose to put this dog down when there were still viable options available to it.

Yes, they just really really wanted to kill the dog. After taking the time to save it and rehabilitate it. They didn't consider all the options, even after the uproar caused by kneejerk reactionists like you. Can you think about how that doesn't make sense, and then re-evaluate your bottom line please? Thanks!

Leading the critics is Camille Hankins, the Director of Win Animal Rights, who was convicted of cruelty to animals in 1995 when nearly 100 animals were found stuffed into a tiny, filthy trailer rented by Hankins. Many of the animals found there were dying from contagious illnesses and many were literally scratching themselves to death and had bloody, seeping wounds from severe untreated mange infestations. Two cats removed by police from Hankins during the service of a search and seizure warrant were treated successfully and lived at PETA’s headquarters for more than 10 years (you can read the details of the case here: http://www.pet-abuse.com/cases/4612/NC/US/).

This was addressed in my puppy kindergarten class (when you adopt a puppy at the ASPCA, they require puppy obedience for at least 6 weeks). According to the teacher (who was one of the handlers working with Oreo and was visibly shaken), Oreo would randomly snap and bite people - even those she seemed to trust. She would be fine for a day, and the next day be out of control. The decision to put her down was not taken lightly, and was made with about half of the ASPCA NYC staff knowing the backlash it would have.

Thanks for sharing that with us. And hoorah for your adoption of a puppy—I hope you and your new family member have a great time together.

Why does the dog have two leashes and two collars?

I was thinking that too. Looks like two leashes and three collars ? Some sort of safety measure ?

Sorry, two collars and three leashes.

Sadly the TV rehab dog trainer Cesar Millan aka "The
Dog Whisperer" was not consulted to take care of"Oreo".
Boooooooooooo! What a missed chance for the ASPCA
and the National Graphic Society channel for a great
episode as well as saving ths Dog.

The groups that are sending emails to not support ASPCA are the ones not to donate. They are using Oreo's death for money and press. They should be ashamed of themselves. A lot of them don't rescue animals and just collect money for their stupid newsletters. Any group that is attacking ASPCA doesn't care at all about animals. They won't care for all those dogs and cats in ASPCA. These groups aren't even groups but run by suck little old ladies filled with bitterness and self-importance. Donate to ASPCA and not to these other groups that never even rescue animals as the ASPCA.

"little old ladies filled with bitterness and self-importance"? i'd think you'd feel very close to them, f-bomb

Time for you to look in the mirror and realize you're too old to be hipster. pathetic and sad.

that is not very nice, you meanie

would you be nicer to me if i was a squirrel?

"They are using Oreo's death for money and press."

I don't know how your own hypocrisy doesn't drag you down into hell every morning. Your sentiment here describes PETA perfectly. If you can't see that, there is NO hope for you at all.

RIP Oreo....it wasn't your fault we made you mean. You're in a better place than NYC right now.

Of course we shouldn't stop donating to the ASPCA because then they will never become a no-kill shelter. They need that money but we are allowed to feel angry at them for what they did to this poor pup.

The ASPCA already is a no-kill shelter and has been for years. They only euthanize in the case of extreme medical or behavioral issues, and successfully rehabilitate hundreds of 'borderline' cases every year. The city shelters (NY AC&C) are not yet no-kill because since they are public they have to deal with the enormous number of animals dumped on them every day.

Now, if only we developed a less asinine attitude to human euthanasia...

Keep on giving money to the ASPCA... it wasn't the organization as a whole that did this. There should be an investigation on who signed off on it, and sack the jerk(s) for not doing everything in his/her/their moral and ethical abilities to manage and direct the ASPCA to save.

...to save Oreo.
(To complete my sentence.)

The ASPCA did what they had to but there are fringe groups that don't do anything but attack other groups as ASPCA that actually do rescue work.

Poor Oreo. But there are plenty of non-aggressive pits that are put down every day, and no one is getting all crazy about them. Well, some people are. But, as a society, we need to go after the people who breed and abuse dogs before we go after the groups that are left caring for them.

Agreed. I wonder how many of the people who have raised such a hysteria around this have pets that they 'rescued' from pet stores (i.e. people who support the puppy mill industry.)
