Is the Pedicab Industry Doomed?

pedicabcrash1109.jpg Will pedicabs become extinct before carriage horses? At the end of last month there were reportedly only 25 of 1,000 pedicabs who became licensed under the city's new regulations. The NYCPOA declared this was untrue, and we've contacted them today to confirm the latest Post report, which says that number is up to only 321. Peter Meitzler from the organization told us that "the current number of plates issued so far to inspected pedicabs is 349 as of 9 this morning."

The Post notes that there are only four days left for the remaining operators to get licensed, and that "after Friday, the Department of Consumer Affairs will close its doors to anyone hoping to register a pedicab — and strict NYPD enforcement will begin." (They've already been seizing rickshaws in Central Park.) However, Meitzler tells us that "final inspections can take place until December 20th, but the application/paperwork deadline is this Friday."

Some pedicab operators who have become legit told the paper the new regulations will make the industry safer. One noting, "Many of these bicycles are very dangerous. This process will make some less dangerous. Some of these guys don't know anything. They just want to make money and aren't safe."

I asked one of those pedicab guys 'how much to newark airport?" and he didn't laugh, so they're OUT

  • just saying

No problem. A carriage driver will take you there for only $1,800 (excluding tolls, natch).

because your old annie hall self is LAME

Pedicabs are a nuisance. I witnessed one get off his bike and kick a car door, denting it. Clearly the bike was in the wrong, trying to cross 3 lanes of traffic to pick up a fare.

If I was in that car, that pedicab driver would be in traction.

  • Mr Mel

Get rid of all of them. If you're in Manhattan, walk!

  • kplunkett

I say get rid of them both. They both annoy me when running in the park. There is nothing romantic about taking a 20 minute carriage ride around central park. Did it once because my wife wanted to do it after getting drunk at our anniversary dinner. I equate the horse drivers with Carnies. I feel gross just walking by them. I have no doubt the horses are miserable and mistreated. If one had to go, let it be the carriages. At least the pedicabs have to work for it.

I would actually be embarrassed to be seen riding around in a pedicab. It's the equivalent to a fanny pack and I heart NY shirt. They're pretty obnoxious. I saw one the other day with a sound system installed under the seat, riding around blasting some god-awful music. At least the horse carriages stick to the park. I say bring on the restrictions. It's one less thing I have to worry about mowing me down as I cross the street. Can you imagine dying from a run away cart full of tourists hitting you? I'd like to die with a little bit of dignity. Lol!

  • Spirit of 76

Just how many people have been mowed down and killed by runaway pedicabs, pray tell? This is just wild conjecture off the top of my head, but I think you might want to worry a bit more about the cars on the streets.

  • Abbott

It was actually a joke, but clearly it went right over your head. And stop using the term "pray tell." It makes you sound like a douche.

  • Spirit of 76

Gee, I notice you didn't tell just_saying that it went over his head. You weren't joking. You hate pedicabs and tourists alike.

And writing "douche" makes you look like a idiot. You don't need to worry about dying with dignity. You have none to begin with.

fwiw - "wild conjecture" is usually not the way to go.

  • just saying

Get a grip. Why are you worrying about your image and whether or not you die with dignity?

Besides the carriage horses don't stick to the park. Most, if not all, the accidents have occurred outside the park. One recommendation in the city controller's audit was to confine the horses (along with their housing facilities) to Central Park. That would enable better oversight of the horses as well as the drivers.

  • Abbott

My point is they're tacky. And who doesn't care about dying with dignity?

  • kazubes

Back to the actual issue here, I for one am very excited to see the carnage in central park this weekend. These have been completely out of control for the past couple of years

  • just saying

Why wait until the weekend when there's NASCAR?

  • just saying

There are 1,000 pedicabs in NYC? I find that very difficult to believe. Some of them must be invisible pedicabs. How did the city come up with that number?

I basically don't have anything against most pedicab operators. They are pleasant and not afraid to work hard for their money--unlike the carriage horse drivers who are ripping off dumb tourists. Where do they find those scumbag drivers? They act like street thugs.

  • NannyState

Pedicabs are the worst form of human trafficking.

  • Angelheaded Hipster

but i am a mere 17-year old boy who works in a halal slaughterhouse in the bronx

is there no way for us to be friends?

  • felixthecat2

Hipster, you've overgrown your hip look. Time for u to bathe and work. Aging hipsters look more pathetic than those so called crazy cat ladies

  • Angelheaded Hipster

felix, i'm worried about you, man. you have that vibe that crazy cat ladies have
