Paterson May Kill New License Plate Fee Plan

2009_11_emplicense.jpg With growing outrage over the state's plan to charge all drivers $25 for new license plates—up from the current $15 and up from $5.50 in 2001—Governor David Paterson said yesterday, "If the Legislature works with me, prior to the release of the 2010-11 Executive Budget, to identify real, recurring savings that will replace the revenue that would be lost, I will eliminate the new license plate requirement."

While the Department of Motor Vehicles claimed, "Periodically re-issuing plates is important for overall safety, law enforcement and the general integrity of the plate," the state hoped to raise $129 million from the plan, which would have also charged driver another $20 if they wanted to keep their license plate's letter/number combination. Upstate residents had complained that they were being forced to bear the brunt of the new fee, since there aren't as many city residents with cars.

A petition coordinated by county clerks at No New Plates picked up a lot of steam last week and the Times Union points out, "The governor's remarks came less than 24 hours before county clerks, mostly Republicans, were scheduled to march on Albany armed with 100,000 petition signatures against the new plates."

The State Legislature is also charged with figuring out how to deal with the $3.2 billion budget deficit—put another way, that license plate fee makes up 4% of the deficit.

I signed that petition a few weeks ago thinking it was a waste of time. Shocking that it might actually have an effect on something.

People are getting tired of handing over more and more over to the government at every level? I'm shocked.

i can't believe anybody cares. this is the most boring country on the planet.

If they don't get you with the tag, they'll get you with the sticker...

fine smokers for littering

I could plug the budget hole in one week issuing traffic tickets to cars blowing through stop signs in the Financial District.

Damn, Obama and Paterson need to grow a pair. They both want to be liked by everyone. Take a stand and do the right thing. 25 dollars is nothing to complain about. Those teabaggers are such complainers.

It is a regressive tax being disguised as a public safety issue. If the state has a budget shortfall they should be going after the people with the money e.g. Goldman Sachs bonuses.

why not DUI fines from cops after they their watering holes?

don't charge for the plates, then fine everyone who throws up from looking at them.

LMFAO!

That's sure to a be a windfall!

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact that David Paterson would lose to RICK LAZIO if the election were held today.

I have a friend in N.C. who asked me what is so bad about Paterson. This is a perfect example. He floats a bad idea, sure to be unpopular, and then quickly backs off. Not the definition of a leader, ya know?

what is this? 1975? Who in the hell picked those colors?
