While Attorney General Andrew Cuomo won't publicly discuss a potential run for governor next year, the NY Times reports that he's been thinking about the gubernatorial ticket for next year: He "and his advisers have been discussing potential candidates to run alongside him, to present the most appealing Democratic ticket to the electorate, people with knowledge of those discussions said." And one of those potential candidates is...City Comptroller Bill Thompson.
Apparently Thompson, who narrowly lost the mayoral election to Mayor Bloomberg, would meet Cuomo's needs, because he's looking for candidates "who would diversify the ticket, which, given the interest shown, has the potential to be dominated by Italian-American men... Adding a prominent African-American could help Mr. Cuomo soothe any resentment he sets off if Gov. David A. Paterson, the state’s first African-American governor, stays in the race and the two men battle for the party’s support at the state convention in the summer." And Cuomo wants to repair his image with African-American voters who may remember his nasty 2002 primary fight with then State Comptroller Carl McCall.
Cuomo's spokesman denies there have been any 2010 discussions.

It may not be such a bad idea. Thompson, on the other hand, should start investigating Escort Services to see if Cuomo uses any of them. That would be one way into the Governors Mansion, it worked for Paterson.
born to be number 2.
How about picking the best candidate instead? It's fine if Cuomo actually thinks Thompson is the best choice for running mate, but the logic that Thompson "would diversify the ticket, which, given the interest shown, has the potential to be dominated by Italian-American men... Adding a prominent African-American could help Mr. Cuomo..." sounds awfully familiar to how we ended up with Paterson as governor in the first place.
Here's a tip, Andy: if you pick someone as a running mate for any reason other than "I think they would make a great governor", then at least make sure you keep your dick in your pants.
Why have two downstate Democrats top the ticket with DiNapoli from the island?
And once again, Thompson's main selling point seems to be what he's not. (Not Bloomberg, not Italian-American.)
