L.I. Man Dies After Cops Shoot Him With Taser Twice

A 43-year-old man died yesterday after Long Island cops shot him twice with a Taser. Officers used the weapon on Darryl Bain, 43, after he locked himself and his 78-year-old mother — who had a restraining order against him — in her Coram home.

After calls to 911 from relatives, police barged into the house at around 2:45 pm and tried to subdue Bain, who at the time was high on cocaine. Cops shot him with a Taser, but they were unable to cuff the 6-foot-3 and 240-pound man, so they shot him a second time. Moments later, he stopped breathing.

Bain's mother, Phyllis Hawkins, told the Daily News that her son's breath smelled of alcohol at the time of his death and that he had long struggled with drugs and booze. "Alcohol did not agree with him," said Hawkins, who noted that police had been called on her son at least 70 times since 2000 due to his behavior when he drank and used drugs. That said, she didn't think that police needed to use a Taser her son. "[The police] know that when he gets like that, he calms himself down," she told the paper. "He seemed to be getting himself together from what he did."

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of death. Tasers became a controversial police tool after the widely publicized death of an emotionally disturbed man who was shot in the chest with the weapon last September. Since then, NYPD cops have been instructed to not aim their Tasers at the chest — though a Brooklyn sergeant tells the Post that the weapon isn't effective if it is pointed elsewhere because both of a Taser's prongs must strike flesh for it to deliver a shock, and the darts tend to veer away from each other in the air. "You can't aim it at the place where it's most likely to work, so it's rendered useless," said the Brooklyn sergeant, who told the tabloid he has used the weapon about 20 times.

If he calms himself down she shouldn't have called the fuxking cops.

Tasers and stun guns are different weapons.

Great job raising such a "good boy", mom.

"[The police] know that when he gets like that, he calms himself down,"

no, they don't...

"...police had been called on her son at least 70 times since 2000..." Well it looks like he wont make it to 75.

That dangerous suspect was attacked with theoretically nonlethal weapons that backfired? Uh...okay? Would...I mean would you rather he was...shot with bullets? I'm just trying to understand. Like-- if you don't want that guy tasered...like, do you want the cops to hit him with clubs? Like, what is "okay" to use?

"What do you do when the police kick in your door like 'get on the floor'
Shoot you in the back
cause who you are and where you at's against the law".

Where's Al?

He was high on cocaine, that means his heart was already screwed up. Add some electricity, and that was the end of that. The cops didn't push the white stuff up his nose, And i agree with the earlier comment, would people rather they use bullets?

I think rather than the point that this guy didn't deserve to live, according to trial by peanut gallery here, the point is that Tasers, though marketed as "non-lethal," are not exactly "non"lethal.

Tasers are in response to people whining that criminals shouldn't get shot when they threaten the lives of others.

A better term would be "less-lethal".. although I'm sure all the nutjobs who claim that tasers are **AS** lethal as guns will come here and cite vague research data backing their dumbfuckery. Pepper spray doesn't work in a lot of situations, cops are rarely encouraged to go "hands-on" a unruly subject--mostly for lawsuit reasons, they get criticized and sued if they shoot someone, etc etc etc.

How, exactly, do these people expect cops to do their jobs?

Come on people after 70 conflicts with his mother, wouldn't you say the guy was basically a piece of shit.

The only people losing here are the local drug dealers and liquor stores.

Tasers should be banned. Cops don't know how to use them properly and they are very dangerous when used on people with cardiac issues.

If the person's only problem was a cardiac issue I am sure the cops wouldn't have tased him. The dude was 230 pounds and 6'3" tall high on drugs. He was lucky they didn't blow him away with a twelve gauge. I sure would have if he looked at me cross eyed.

Problem is the cops never know beforehand whether or not someone has a cardiac condition. The use of drugs can definitely exacerbate that. Cops misuse their tasers all the time. The potential for killing someone when lethal force is not permitted is extremely high. Tasers should be banned.

So you would prefer they would have just shot him in the face, then?

played him on C.O.D. 5; kicked his ass

"Bain's mother, Phyllis Hawkins" I just love the way the last names don't match.

What was she going to say next? "He was such a good boy when he was growing up without a father. Why just next spring he would be graduating from high school. My o my how did this thing happen? I will be calling Reverend Al first thing in the morning."

It would appear to me that the cocaine played a part in his death. The taser may have worked if he hadnt this drug in his system. Im sure the autopsy will bare this out.
