Digital Billboard Wreaks Havoc on Canal

You think that salacious Calvin Klein billboard is distracting... how about this new, menacing digital billboard at the corner of Canal and Hudson? NYC the Blog has video of it in action, and declares it to be a "potential mental health hazard" for those living near by (let's not forget what that glowing Kenny Rogers Roasters sign did to Kramer). Then there's the whole problem of temporarily blinding those operating motor vehicles in a pedestrian-heavy city.

The site notes that Celebrity Vision "is the company marketing these. Their website states they only focus their advertising efforts on high traffic areas; specifically major tunnels and bridges."

Those lit bus ads are also a nuisance. The sign at the Holland Tunnel is ridiculous. Why not turn the whole city into Times Square?

  • whitecastlerock

I am more concerned by any cyclists who may have been inconvenienced by the bright lights. Are there any pictures of cyclists rubbing their eyes? I sure hope not

    ha!

Heheh that image in summary view is GOLD Jerry, GOLD!

Annoying maybe, but a "menacing" mental health hazard ? A lot of people who live in densely populated areas have distractions outside of their windows. You can always move.

  • yakatori

And you're a mental health expert how?

Yes, I thought so. You're just an idiot making a random comment.

  • marcasm

Not an expert, but currently I am staring at the flashing billboard outside of my window, while eating tsukune. Mentally, I feel fine, except for the trolls.

How about those new LED screens on the side of buses? They illuminate half a block while the bus rolls down the street.

Doesn't seem legal to me. Here's a link to the DOB's website, which claims there are "no illuminated signs" on the property.

It does, however, reflect a recent complaint filed against it with no inspection as of yet.

    thats been there for years,

if anybody lives right there, and it sure looks like it

a bb gun would have solved that problem.

My cell phone can dim itself based on lighting conditions...why can't this billboard? It doesn't need to be on full brightness after dark.

  • JacqueMehoff

I swore that's been there for a while.

there's still lots of ambient lighting to not really blind you.

not much there, used to be the printing distict.

now it's supposedly hipper and called hudson square.

  • fuboy

Time to rally project mayhem, but what would you show the world if you could control this thing?

  • spnder

I was walked past there a couple weeks ago and though the same thing. It was giving me Pokemon seizures...

  • Chillinoncentral

This is an accident (and a huge lawsuit against the city) just waiting to happen

  • WOW.
