It was Andy "Warhol's night" at yesterday's contemporary art auction at Sotheby's. One of his first silk-screen paintings, "200 One Dollar Bills" yielded a surprising $43.7 million: While the bidding started at $6 million, the price jumped rapidly between five bidders, all of whom were eager to nab the Warhol classic. The estimated price was $12 million, so it was a shock that the painting brought in more than three times that. Sotheby's refused to reveal the identity of the buyer, but one unsuccessful bidder told the Times, "I think the painting was worth it. It was rare and great. And the appealing estimate helped encourage bidding."

got laid off from here...looks like things are looking up. lol.
really? that sucks. i heard they are hiring?
Who are these people buying art for over 40 million dollars?!??!!?!?
Brother, can you spend dime? On me? PLease!!!
very rich people with apparently enough disposable income to throw at "artists" like andy warhol. More than likely it's a foreign buyer.
this is disgusting
One of the few early Warhols still in private hands. Everyone expected a bidding war.
And they got it. I sure hope they have a nice sofa to enhance it's final resting place. Or should it go over the fireplace? I guess they will have to repaint the room also. Oh my how the costs add up when dabbling in art.
It will only go up in value.
You mean kind of like the tulip mania in February 1637, when tulip contracts sold for more than 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman.
It has value only to those that speculate in same. Hopefully in the future it will sell for what its worth. Then the waammbulance will pick up the body when it falls from the penthouse.
I'm gonna start saving up for the next time something like this is available. Apparently, art is the way to go.
