Belgian Teen Arrested After Liaison With 14-Year-Old Girl

The father of a 14-year-old Connecticut girl filed a missing persons report with police after his daughter left the house Saturday morning and didn't come home that night. The unidentified girl wasn't answering her cellphone, but police were able to track her down using her the phone's signal, finally locating her Sunday afternoon in a room at the Belleclaire Hotel on the Upper West Side. Inside the room, police found condoms, a vibrator, and an 18-year-old Belgian man named Anthony Freson, who swears the girl told him she was 18 when they "met" in a Yahoo chat room in April.

Fresson, who flew to New York for the rendezvous, was arrested on charges of kidnapping, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, even though the girl told police she lied to him about her age. Her father, a teacher, tells the Post, "She thinks he's the most wonderful person. She's angry with me right now because I stopped it. I was so worried. I couldn't sleep. I couldn't eat. I was calling [her cellphone] every five minutes... I want him to go to jail. She's my only child. She did something stupid." Freson is being held on $2,000 bail following his arraignment in Manhattan criminal court.

when i was 14, i definitely passed for 18 (no make-up necessary) and my 20-yr old sister enjoyed taking me to the occasional college mixer and see who fell for the bait.

fortunately for me (and the guys, i suppose) i was too naive to maintain the illusion for long.

The age of consent in Europe generally varies from 14 to 17 years old (except for Spain where it is 13). In Belgium, the age of consent is 16.

I don't know what this 14 year old girl looks like, but makeup could easily make her look years older than her chronological age. When my 16 year old neighbor sneaks out to go to the clubs, she wears makeup and clothes that easily make her look 25.

If she willing went to see him, and if he claims that she told him she was >= 18, then I foresee a jury having a hard time throwing a young man's life away.

Make no mistake, child molestation is a horrible crime, and offenders ought to be severely punished. However, the law must be fluid and evolving in order to dispense justice (and therefore able to distinguish between actual predators on dateline and genuinely infatuated persons--if the law cannot meet that simple test, then the law does not work).

NYS criminal law takes into account the amount of years between the "adult" and minor and the incarceration periods are on a sliding scale according to that span.

Ugh, I hate questions like this. Clearly we want to discourage child abuse, but also age is clearly an organic, molding & drifting. 14 to 18 is a long way, but not a VERY long way. 4 very important years-- but enough to put a teenager in jail as a sex offender? I don't know about that. Consensual sex among minors-- made all the more difficult by the fact that most of America wants to pretend sex is filthy & thus a secret.
