Locals Want Park in Old St. Saviour's Space

Following a local's video footage of unsafe work going down at the spot that used to house St. Saviour's Church (it was relocated to another space), the Daily News takes a look at the mess in Maspeth. A chain link fence and partial stop work order have appeased the situation for now, but what's in store for the future?

Queens Borough President Helen Marshall and City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley are reportedly trying to get a grant from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund to purchase the 1.5-acre of land at 57th Road and 58th Street. The owner, Maspeth Development LLC, has been mum about his plans for the property, but activists say they are open to the park idea.

Locals say the neighborhood is in need of some green, one telling the paper, "There's really not much around here. Everyone really wants a park." Another activist noted that this is the last opportunity for the area to get such a sizable open public space.
