The public will no longer be able to visit the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting to parse through a weekly stack of film shoot permits. Instead, those interested in leafing through the pile of city paperwork (i.e. the paparazzi) will be forced to file for the data under the Freedom of Information Law.
Though many consider the FOIL process unnecessarily tedious and time-consuming, the city maintains it isn't changing the policy to make it more difficult for news agencies and paparazzi to determine the whereabouts of celebrities. Officials told the Daily News that they are making the change "because of staffing issues, office space constraints and complaints about copies being pocketed - not complaints from the stars."
A Mayoral spokesman promised that all requested documents will be sent to the public within a week — but photographers like Christopher Peterson of the Buzz Foto agency fear that movie shoots might be over by the time he receives the information from the city. "If you shut down Fifth Ave. so Angelina Jolie can [film a movie], you're not entitled to think you can just sort of cloak it and keep it from people."

Why not publish the records online?
Um if it keeps people like douchey paparazzi from knowing information, I don't particularly care about the city's heavy handed move. Leaving people alone every now and then shouldn't be considered a crime either.
soon enough only the rich and famous can be in Manhattan.
Sorry, celebrities/moviemakers, but couldn't paparazzi just look for the city signs that say you can't park on a certain street? I've figured out like 5 movies being filmed around where I live b/c of that.
Of course, and that's why the closing quote is an overstatement. If 5th Avenue is closed down for a shoot, there'll be signs posted stating what it is for.
But no one can cover the whole city looking for those, so obviously it won't be as easy as it has been. Besides paparazzi it'll disappoint some tourists and even local fans. There are a number of websites that list shooting locations; I've never really thought about where they get that information but I guess it has been from someone visiting the film office.
Paps already hire spotters so what's the difference? In 2 weeks it'll be as if nothing changed.
Yeah, I can't really believe they rely too much on this information anyway. There's no way to know whether any particular star will be at a given shooting location on a specific day.
Not only that; The celebs that are in the magazines all the time are there because they tip the paps off beforehand.
just befriend or temp in the biz, there's a daily sheet that shows all the current productions in the city.
"there's a daily sheet that shows all the current productions in the city."
The first step in compiling it is someone making a visit to the film office. Again, this policy affects more than just paparazzi.
A friend does location scouting and liaison work, I'll have to remember to ask him what impact this might have.
paps are the worst kind of photographer to be.
Gee, so it bothers the paps?
MUST be a good thing, those guys are the scum of the earth.
Anyone seen this trend down in Soho where the paparazzi ride bikes from place to place but don't bother to lock them up - they just turn them over or lean them up against trees, signs, or poles or whatever - so they can leap on them in a moments notice and ride off elsewhere to bug the shit out of people?
Crap-- I'm all for transparency & freedom of information...but hate the paparazzi...ETHICS DILEMMA!?
ON THE PHONE WITH THIS FAT CHICK......WHERER MY IHOP
