Street gangs used to have way cooler names — like, say, the Devil's Rebels for instance. Now there's some amazing footage that's resurfaced of the '70s Bushwick gang, originally broadcast as part of a 1976 newscast. The footage was allegedly captured using a night vision lens and concealed cameras, and Bushwick BK notes that it all goes down in the 83rd Precinct, "a battleground for the police and young street criminals, where a teenage gang roams the streets at night looking for trouble."
We'd prefer those baseball bats and lead pipes over machetes.

The opening sequence where you see the guys in colors, brought back some pretty scary memories...you knew the gang was around, and you got the hell away when you saw them. And you hoped to g*d they would pick on you, cause no one was going to help you.

It's funny because the pussies that now inhabit the neighborhood dress very much like these guys but, well you know, they are pussies and these guys clearly are not.

What about the Chaplains, the Bishops, the South Brooklyn Boys, the Golden Ginnies, the Hilltoppers, the VanDukes, the Baldies?
Any pictures of those guys would be appreciated.

Or the Mau Maus, although that would have been the 1960s.

Or the Orphans, Baseball Furies and Lizzies.

I wonder where Wally Savage is now? That guy rules!
amg2000
I guess Wally Savage would be 51 or so if he's still alive.
Bushwick was predominately Puerto Rican back then, Wally looks like he's Irish or German-American (although I guess he could be Puerto Rican). He's have to have been extra tough to get into that gang.
books
I remember when they first used a machete on someone - it was the early 90s right a few blocks from my high school John Jay. thank god for the ged.

Bushwick BK is probably the worst neighborhood blog on the internet.
Every single post there is written by an inane, stuck up, clueless, arrogant idiot.
From the original post about this video:
The supposedly undercover video takes place in "the eighty-third precinct, a battleground for the police and young street criminals," where a teenage gang called "The Devil’s Rebels" roams the streets at night … looking for trouble. (Watch out, they’ve got baseball bats!)
What's the point of writing that they have baseball bats sarcastically? Is he somehow suggesting he could inhabit 1970s Bushwick?
This IS the same man who was almost robbed for his bike and got the shit kicked out of him in the process, then cried about it in a long, drawn out blog post complete with the usual "I'M NOT MOVING FOR ANYTHING I DON'T CARE HOW BAD THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IS" ramblings typical of bushwickBK contributers. (http://bushwickbk.com/2009/08/...
Seriously fuck Bushwick BK and anyone who writes for them. Stop reblogging them.

agreed.

You say 'stop reblogging them', but you just did.
just saying...

Take away the guns and the old school gangs would beat the shit out of today's gangs...they never have to fight hand to hand...why bother, just kill em instead.
But since today's gangs have guns, and lots of them, today's gangs would win.
I wonder truly how the gangs of the 70's compare to the LA Street gangs nowadays.
ANGRYGOD11
Today's gang would wipe out gangs of the 70's. They have better weapons and the 70's gangs would be laughing too hard at the falling over-sized pants to aim straight.
