Former NY Post Editor Sues Over Firing, Harassment

The NY Post editor who was fired after complaining about a controversial political cartoon depicting the author of Obama's stimulus package as a dead chimpanzee has filed a major lawsuit against the tabloid, News Corp, and Post editor in chief Col Allan. It's a doozy! In the 38 page complaint, Sandra Guzman accuses her former employer of ignoring racist and sexual harassment, and depicts the Post newsroom as a male-dominated frat house run by the crude, misogynistic Allan. Hardly surprising, but her accusations are juicy nonetheless:

  • The Post's D.C. bureau chief stated that the publication's goal was to "destroy [President] Barack Obama."
  • "On one occasion when Ms. Guzman and three female employees of the Post were sharing drinks at an after-work function. Allan approached the group of women, pulled out his blackberry and asked them 'What do you think of this?' On his blackberry was a picture of a naked man lewdly and openly displaying his penis. When Ms. Guzman and the other female employees expressed their shock and disgust at being made to view the picture, Allan just smirked."
  • "A White male senior editor sexually propositioned a young female Copy Assistant, telling her that 'If you give me a blowjob, I will give you a permanent reporter job.'"
  • "On another occasion... Allan approached a female employee during a party at the Post, rubbed his penis up against her and made sexually suggestive comments about her body, including her breasts, causing that female employee to feel extremely uncomfortable and fearing to be alone with him."

Oh, and when Guzman would walk by certain offices at the paper, editors would allegedly sing songs from West Side Story such as "I want to live in America," which Guzman interpreted as mocking her Latino heritage. She also claims the Post had planned to run a cartoon in the newspaper depicting Jews as sewer rats.

The lawsuit, which the Huffington Post has obtained in full, accuses the Post of firing her as retaliation for speaking out about the dead chimp cartoon. A spokesman for the tabloid says, "Sandra's position was eliminated when the monthly in-paper insert, Tempo, of which she was editor, was discontinued, reflecting the dramatic decline in ad sales across our industry."

Ah what a surprise! moral corruption comes hand in hand with power abuses and and an aggressive "assertion" of "male" identity!

1972 called, they want their "radical" philosophy back.

yeah because this bullying never happens, right!?

Because a termination letter saying "I'm sorry, you suck at your job. Pack up your shit." would have been more direct, but in bad taste... maybe even a waste of letterhead.

They're just nasty people and on their Fox network, they can be even more loathsome.

Wow. You can't make this stuff up. But its still not surprising given that this IS the Post. Garbage paper written by garbage staff.

just the "tip" of the iceberg i'm sure. anyone above a 3rd grade reading level knows that Rupert Murdoch and his minions are agents of paranoia, harassment, and intellectual degradation. so what self-respecting person (male, female, and everything in between) would choose to work for that crusty old devil?

The post has 1/2 million circulation. Must be the same people who voted for Bloomberg

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1109/Two_versions_of_a_story_about_the_New_York_Post.html

The Daily News offered a sanitized version of the story: "A New York Post editor sacked after complaining that a cartoon likened President Obama to a monkey sued the paper on Monday, claiming rampant racism and sexism in the newsroom" but detailed none of the actual allegations.

It's something specific to Mike Bloomberg's New York that it's now a town where the Daily News makes sure not to hurt the feelings of the Post.

I like Ben Smith but this doesn't make a lot of sense.

The Daily News newsroom probably has its own set of sordid tales and after laying off tons of staff not so long ago there are plenty of bitter ex-writers and interns who would be more than happy to spill the beans to the Post.

down fox! long live huffington post!

That doesn't surprise me about the Post. What DOES surprise me is when comments like that elicit anything but derisive laughter. Why do people get so super-offended by sexual harassment at the workplace? It's just another form of workplace harassment, along with gossip, office politics etc etc. I remember a boss hitting on me, and I started to laugh. He never hit on me again...

Similarly, if some asshole told me he'd give me a promotion if I sucked his dick, I'm pretty sure I would be shocked, and then start to laugh. "ahahah...you're funny, boss!" as I head back to my desk.

But I guess I have a thicker skin than most ladies. I know that guys think with their dicks, but in the instances here, it seems more like a power trip sort of thing. Why let the guy have power over you by letting on that he bothered you? Same with lewd catcallers on the streets. Ignore them, they're looking for a reaction.

Of course, if you're looking to get rich from a lawsuit, I guess you want to be harassed!

with all due respect, has anyone ever told you that you are much too reasonable and level-headed for these crazy, silly, sexy times?

it's less amusing when you think you're going to lose a job you really need (you know, to eat and stuff) if you don't give your employer the reaction they want. then it's just degrading, depressing, and a little harder to giggle your way through.

Yes, and that is precisely the sort of situation in which you contact a lawyer. If you got fired because you wouldn't sleep with your boss - SUE!!! But that does not appear to be the case in this situation.

This woman was perfectly content with that environment as long as she was getting paid. Her main case—that she was fired because of her opinion of the cartoon—is extremely weak, so she's going to sex it up as much as possible.

No 'dick in a box'? The News Corp. must really be cutting back in this recesssion.

An article in the Times yesterday noted that Post circulation is down 30 percent in 30 months -- a bigger drop than most other newspapers -- has fallen below the Daily News and has lost money consistently since Rupert Murdoch bought it. I guess you really can go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public, difficult as that is.
