The Daily News' Elizabeth Benjamin reports that City Comptroller Bill Thompson's name is "being floated" for various positions, including Senator. Rep. Jose Serrano says, "Billy Thompson obviously is the kind of public servant who not only who serves the public well but has proven he doesn't need a lot of money to do well in an election. He would be a formidable candidate statewide anytime." And even though President Obama personally asked other pols not to run against Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a "senior New York Democrat" tells the News, "The presumption is that a White House that didn't really show strong support for Bill Thompson for mayor in this environment couldn't do that to him twice."

Huge assumption here -- that people were pulling the lever for him. Most people I know who voted for him were more concerned that their vote was against Bloomberg. Not sure it was a big love-fest for Thompson.
I couldn't remember his name....still can't.
That's probably the worst political analysis I've ever read. They "couldn't do that to him twice"???
No no no no no. There's no better way to hand that seat to the Republicans than to throw a nobody like Thompson out there.
No way does Thompson merit a Senate seat. When your loyalty is valued more than anything else you bring to the table...
...who?
It's obvious he was told to run a nebbishy campaign so he would be in line for a future job.

I think he'd be a good ambassador to some country somewhere. Being an ambassador can't be that hard and ambassadors report to the secretary of state.
The office of United States Ambassador to Jamaica is currently empty.
Ambassador to Saint Kitts and Nevis, where Thompson's family is from, is also vacant.
Honestly, how much damage can an ambassador cause?
He could run to replace David Paterson. NY would get to keep a black governor and a Democrat.
