Puppy Tied to FDR

fdrpuppy.jpg Pet abandoners: please do not leave animals tied to the FDR! Jennie Min of NJ says: "I went to Manhattan today and found somebody tied a small pitbull right on the FDR Drive! She looked so afraid and was crying when I found her." Min waited an hour to see if the owner would show, then tried three non-kill shelters, all of which had no space. Since she can't take on another dog, she left her with Animal Care & Control... which means it doesn't have much time to live. She asked the ACC to contact her if they are forced to put her to sleep, and is hoping someone will save her before that happens. [via GirlieGirlArmy]

I imagine you meant to say "please do NOT leave animals tied to the FDR."

Anybody who abandons an animal in public is a real scumbag.

Poor thing.
Hope they can find a home for her.

"three non-kill shelters, all of which had no space."

which is probably why the dog was tied to the FDR.

non-kill shelters are dog hell on earth. least humane institution endorsed by the general public.

let's all demonize the ACC for providing an essential service, hmm?

bah - you dont know what you're talking about. the no kill shelters are mostly just volunteers who house dogs until they can find an owner for them - they run on donations and volunteers - but because they cant take every dog, like this one, they are 'dog hell on earth'?

why dont you DO something yourself instead of critizing people who are trying to make the city better?

actually, jackass. although i won't elaborate, suffice to say that i've had a lot of prolonged contact and exposure to animal shelters at various times.

and if you actually knew anything of what you pretend to be informed about, you would realize that i'm not talking about volunteer operated shelter and placement organizations, i'm talking about actual "non-kill" facilities, where they keep dogs in enclosures around the clock. while some of these places are actually not bad at all (and do in fact euthanize animals, despite the moniker), the ones that literally do not euthanize animals whatsoever tend to be quite hellish for dogs.

why dont you DO something yourself instead of critizing people who are trying to make the city better?

again, assuming you know what you're talking about, or who you're talking to...? and did you not read what i said about the ACC? jesus. i don't see you walking around picking up dog shit, nor do i care, or want to hear about how many adopted animals are in your house at this moment.

truly non-kill shelters are part of the problem, not the solution. they just keep dogs no matter how "unadoptable" they are, forcing dozens of perfectly "adoptable" dogs to be euthanized immediately because there's no place for them. it's the harsh reality, but if anybody actually cares, shut up, get off of gothamist and go adopt a damn dog today.

blah, blah, whatever - judging by your reasoning 'they should kill the unadoptable dogs so they have room for other dogs' and your name calling reply, I think you're just an idiot.

I have to agree with Hotcup. It'd be great if we lived in a world where all the dogs could be saved and taken to giant farms upstate to live out the rest of their days. But we don't, and a certain number of animals are going to be put down. Thats just the reality of the situation. So, yeah, we should prioritize the dogs with the greatest chance of getting adopted. If it comes down to a 6 year old pit bull with scars that look like they come from fighting, or a 5 month old labrador mix, its a no brainer which one will get adopted.

paging the usual psychotic animal lovers. put your money where your mouth is and adopt this doggie right now! woof!

Maybe release the dog into the wild instead of sending him to a doggy death camp. But teach him how to hunt and kill first.

There should be more open spaces for animals to roam free. Too many damn humans around consuming resources.

Contact the Animal Farm Foundation (www.animalfarmfoundation.org) in upstate NY. If they cannot directly assist, maybe they know a group/location that can.

Another example of why I believe in forced or secret sterilization. The person who tied this dog up should not be able to reproduce.

Sadly this actually happens all the time. A lot of pits found tied to things are either dogs bred for fighting that are ultimately deemed useless by their handlers or they are the detritus of some little wannabe gangsta who decided after a few weeks or months that looking like a badass with a pitty isn't worth putting up with an untrained, hyperactive animal that requires daily walking.

"three non-kill shelters, all of which had no space."

This is exactly why I adopted my cat from ACC. The reason no-kill shelters don't kill is because they pick and choose which animals they take. Your pet has to go through an interview of sorts before they take it in, if they choose to take it in. That being said, I find it a far more noble deed to adopt from a kill shelter where they take every and all animals.

This story is as bad as the one a few years ago. It seems the some of the jerks who rent a summer share in the Hamptons would buy a dog and then abandon it at the end of the season. One guy even took his large dog out into the ocean and attempted to drown it by holding it under. The dog struggled and the guy was having a rough time killing it, but by then the crowd had noticed what was going on and rescued the pup and the guy was arrested. A happier ending.

Jesus Christ! What kind of assholes do they have out there on the island?

maybe she can get some help on Yelp.

its 2:24 on the 9th of november. is she still there, if so where exactly i will go and try to help. please let me know

Call Animal Care and Control: (212) 788-4000.

I wish I can take him but I have no room. I live in a box sized apt. But this is why I fight against puppy mills and animals in pet store. They are the cause of the problem. All the breeding had condemned shelter dogs to death. Shame on them. And what the hell, hotcup? Really? Hotcup, the blame is on petshops that sells animals and people who buy them. Poor puppy. What kind of person dumps a dog? I wish I could kill with hate.

Emilinda Navarez!

Emilinda runs a VERY succesful dog rescue. She has placed hundreds of dogs with the help of a decicated team of "foster parents" for the pups. I got my doggie from her and he is the best! My dog was rescued from an owner who was starving him to death. He's the most loving dog in the world and I'm so glad that she was able to keep him out of a shelter. Emilinda takes calls 24 hours a day!

How can one "tie a dog *to* the FDR"? Simple answer: move into the East Village/LES/Murray Hill some time in the last few years and never leave your zip code. That way, one doesn't learn that "the FDR" (also known as the "East Side Highway") is a 9.4-mile highway. Not a singular thing onto which one might tie a dog.

That said, I do hope that the pup is delivered to a good home. Too many pitbulls are already crowding our shelters. Not to mention the ones tied to the Henry Hudson Parkway...
